Negatory.  The best dvd burner has to be the NEC 2500 and up.  Like this NEC 3500. http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=27-152-029&depa=1

Best bang for the buck, works damn well excellent, and just about all dvd burner related sites give the NEC drive a good rating.

Getting in on this sorta late, but I’ll still throw my $.02 in on the conversation.  I have this same model as well, and I have no complaints.  It’s quick, reliable, and burns dual layer if you need it. Not to mention that it comes with a white & black faceplate so you can match it to your case.  A great burner at an attractive price.

So can you do a direct copy, or do you have to rip the dvd then copy it? Because it would be nice to just throw in the movie and the blank dvd in and have it copy, like a CD Burner

edit: does DL jus mean dual layer?

DL does mean dual layer.

As far as direct copy I wouldn’t recommend doing this—you’ll end up with a lot of ‘coasters’—trust me on this.

I have this one:
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=27-152-035&depa=0
It is very good and very quiet. Burns fast, have burned CD-R, DVD-R, CD-RW, Video CD and no problems at all. Used Nero Burning ROM.

What media do most people use with this Sony model (710A)?

I use Imation, I get 50 CD spindles [Single Layer] for like $15-20 and I haven’t had any problems with them yet.  Maxell is supposed to be a decent brand to use also.

yea, jus found some from bustbuy, $30 for 3!!!. damn, anyone kno of anywhere they are cheaper? If not I guess I will go with single layered and just shrink any dvds that are too big until DL media drops in price

EDIT:
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=27-152-038&depa=0

just decided im gonna go with this one ^^^ instead of the sony, because a lot of people on this forum are recommending it, its cheaper, and it writes DVD-R at 16X and the sony only does 8X

i have this
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=27-106-925R&depa=0

Never had a bad burn using decent media,  dual layer discs are so expensive at this point i wouldnt bother with a DL burner now. Possibily in the future.

Save your money, they are too expensive at this point, and a SL disc is just as effective 😊

Yea, I think i’m going to just shrink any dvd that doesnt fit on a SL disk until DL disks are cheaper.

I also decided to get this dvd burner instead of the sony, cause its cheaper and it burns dvd-r’s at 16X while the sony only does 8X
