Black Swan Expected to Influence Spring Fashion
Posted by Robin Paulson Categories: Fashion Designers, Fashion Shows,
Prepare yourself for a bombardment of tutus, feathers, and knits -- Rodarte fans are swooning everywhere! It's bad enough that people are clocking in more hours at the gym because of Black Swan, but now clothing designers are banking on the film's popularity in hopes that consumers will flock to their stores, too.
Costume designer Amy Westcott worked with Rodarte duo Kate and Laura Mulleavy in bringing the gothic fairytale looks to life. "We had an affinity for the subject matter," Kate said. She added that it helped her understand the "darker nature and twisted kind of underbelly" of the ballet world.
Lagerfeld's Spring/Summer 2011 collection already reflects a feminine-with-a-dash-of-darkness theme, complete with dark eye makeup, sheer materials, and jeweled fabrics. BCBG Max Azria and Lipsy of London are due to sell tutus come this Spring.
Amidst this dance craze, let's not forget that there's always American Apparel.

Quote of the Day: Miley Cyrus Started Plaid
Posted by Robin Paulson Categories: Celebrities, Fashion Designers, News, Rumors,

“We look into fashion designs very much in advance. We started the plaid shirts and the cheetah pants before people started seeing it [on runways]. When you first look at it as a designer, you think, ‘Okay, this is going to be a little crazy.’ But you don’t know what’s going to be in in a year like Max [Azria] does. Max looks at other designers, and you know it’s very advanced. He’s got the inside scoop.”

From Derek Lam and Alexander Wang to Max Azria and Jason Wu (and many more!), a quick recap of New York Fashion Week is covered in this 5-minute clip, spliced with interview clips from designers and celebrity fans.
Designer Phillip Lim had quite a tongue-twisting way of describing his collection: “It is about the mystery woman. Us as voyeurs, us being curious as who this woman is and how she goes on about her life, from day to night, weekend to weekday. And it starts with the idea of deconstructing construction to reconstructed.”
And you should hear what Michael Kors had to say about a certain pet peeve…

Whether it be a fashion magazine or fashion designer, notable people and company from the industry are turning to film and television when the pages and clothes aren’t selling.
Cue Max Azria, whom we all knew was headed down this path after he helped Miley Cyrus and Wal-Mart out.
Where is he headed? Where the beautiful people are, of course! Azria will be joining the list of The Beautiful Life guest stars, which recently includes Nina Garcia
The CW show, along with older sister Gossip Girl, has pulled in a myriad of familiar designers. The show, created by Ashton Kutcher (come on, you know that it’s going to be awful with his name and Mischa’s attached to it), airs September 16.

Miley Cyrus Brings ‘High Fashion’ to Middle America
Posted by Robin Paulson Categories: Celebrities, Fashion Designers, Fashion Shows, News, Sales, Girls,
In what can only turn out to be a coma-inducing interview in next month’s issue of Elle, Miley Cyrus talks about her “fashion line” for Wal-Mart:
“Oh my God, I’m so stoked! It’s a lot of peasanty, flowy tops, hippie and loose and sexy, like boho chill mixed with English-rocker-esque. Plaids, studs, rips, cool colors. The jeans are my favorite part of the entire line. Because, like, literally, this is going to good for, like, Middle America, and it will be great for kids that really want to be in fashion but they don’t have it available.”
After reading that remark, I greatly laud any journalist who has interviewed that girl. Kids who want to be in fashion but don’t have it available? It’s called thrift stores and the internet, Miley. But wait, there’s more!
“I would pay $500 for the jeans that we make for $20,” she said. “I’m really into high fashion.” I died a little inside when I read that. Christian Lacroix most likely put on his last couture show yesterday, and Miley Cyrus puts out a line for Wal-Mart and has the audacity to claim that she is really into high fashion. Will her egregious reign ever end?
