Weekend Reading: Wonder Woman, Alex Toth, NYCC and Star Wars

Doesn’t everyone who’s not there wish they were at the New York Comic Con this weekend? Or is it just me?
Big announcements all across the board. Marvel and DC are cutting prices which won’t boost sales enough for the Big Two to make the same amount of money. But it’s good news for non-Big Two publishers who can try to tap into the money customers are saving and steer it their way. I’m looking at you Boom!, Dynamite, Moonstone and IDW.
DC’s also cutting the story count down to 20 pages. Since there aren’t that many paid ads anymore, anyone want to wager on when the $2.99 printed comics go from 32 pages down to 24 to further reduce costs?
And in the wake of his supervisor stepping down, Bob Wayne‘s been given a promotion and stays in New York. Well played.
At Project Child Murdering Robot, Ricky Sprague has some thoughts about the new Wonder Woman TV series in development by David E. Kelley (Ally McBeal; Boston Legal). His advice: “Please don’t shy away from her glorious bondage past.”
Toasting Toth: Who doesn’t love Alex Toth? John Kricfalusi posts panels from a really nice story and breaks down his love for it.
Toth II: Daniel Best at 20th Century Danny Boy has some great information of Alex Toth and the artist’s time in Australia. Bonus: lots of Toth artwork.

Sneak Peek: El Gorgo! #3 Is Coming!
Posted by Tom Mason Categories: Editorials, Independent,
Great Googly Moogly! Writer Mike McGee and artist Tamas Jakab are prepping the third issue of their creation, El Gorgo! If you’re already on board with the “world’s greatest Luchador gorilla” read no further, but if you haven’t checked out these whacked-out, Kirby-inspired, cosmic adventures yet, what the heck are you waiting for?
The creators put each issue up on the El Gorgo! website for free-reading, but they also create a print version for those of us who still like to hold printed matter in our hands. And the print version is nice too - quality paper and vibrant colors make El Gorgo leap from the page. And since he has enough power and courage to kick a dinosaur in the face, you’d better duck.
The color cover and the first 11 pages of the impending third issue - “The Hour of Dagon” - are up at the El Gorgo! site right now. They’re in black and white, but they’ll be in color when the issue’s finished.
If you’re feeling like the third issue might be too difficult a spot to join in, fear not. Mike and Tamas have posted the complete first and second issues of El Gorgo! for free-reading.

SNEAK PEAK: EL GORGO! Butt-Kickin’ Luchador Gorilla Super-Hero!
Posted by Tom Mason Categories: Editorials,

“He’s a rock star, a professional wrestler, a historical novelist and a freakin’ super-hero.” That’s writer Mike McGee’s description of his and Tamas Jakab’s all-powerful hero, El Gorgo. Oh, and El Gorgo is also a gorilla, capable of kicking a dinosaur in the face “while making a fist with his foot.”
Get the idea yet that El Gorgo! is no ordinary independent comic? The first issue came out toward the end of last year and the second issue will be available on February 20th. You may not be able to find them at your LCS (the comics aren’t carried by Diamond Comics), but it’s certainly easy to find a copy. You can order both issues from the El Gorgo! website, and you can also preview complete issues of both El Gorgo! #1 and El Gorgo #2 there as well. Creators Jakab and McGee have posted them for free and easy viewing.
The second issue, “Terror On Titan!,” takes place 10,000 years in the future as El Gorgo! and Nika face a new breed of Deep Ones. Fans of Jack Kirby’s Fourth World stuff (New Gods, Mister Miracle, The Forever People), Mike Baron and Steve Rude’s Nexus, DC Comics’ 1960s Gorilla-themed issues and even the Stan Lee/Jack Kirby Thor will find lots to love here. This is a kick-butt comic that grabs you by the throat and doesn’t let go. Print may be soon become an elderly Viking, set on fire and put out to sea, but after reading an online issue of El Gorgo! there can be only one response: I do want.
