Molly Shannon Hosting May 12 SNL

Molly Shannon was one of my favorite cast members on Saturday Night Live, so it’s nice to see her coming back to host the May 12th episode. I’m hoping we’ll see the return of Mary Katherine Gallagher too. I always marveled at how much Molly Shannon could flop around. You know she must have taken some bruising with that character! She can also be seen in the upcoming film, Year of the Dog, in which she plays a serious role. This is a side of Shannon that we haven’t seen before, and I’m really interested to see how she pulls it off. It’s always interesting to see a comedic actor like Jim Carrey or Adam Sandler take on the dark, serious character. Yahoo! Check it out… also, this Sunday the documentary Saturday Night Live in the ‘90s will air at 9:00 on NBC.

New SNL Documentary in the Works

Who knew that there were Saturday Night Live documentaries in existence? Well, it’s news to me, and I consider myself a pretty diehard SNL fan. Through good times and bad, I’ve watched… So, I just read that NBC has ordered a documentary about the show during the 1990s. Cool, I thought, then I read that there were two previous documentaries. Huh? Guess I’ve got to hunt those down because I love that behind-the-scenes kind of stuff. This latest edition is called Saturday Night Live in the ‘90s: Pop Culture Nation and promises to be “funny, dramatic and filled with great clips and new interviews featuring the biggest comedy stars of today. These are the backstage stories that made headlines.” What makes this great will be interviews of former cast members and writers—Mike Myers, Tina Fey, Will Ferrell, Cheri Oteri, Chris Rock, Molly Shannon, Tim Meadows and Jimmy Fallon. You can catch the documentary on May 6th.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus Hosting Upcoming SNL

Saturday Night Live is back with an all-new show this weekend. You won’t want to miss it when The New Adventures of Old Christine‘s Julia Louis-Dreyfus hosts on March 17th. Louis-Dreyfus is herself an SNL alum, appearing on the sketch comedy from 1982-1985. She hosted the show last year and is one of the better comedic actors to grace Studio 8H. Musical guest for the show is Snow Patrol.
March 24th, SNL‘s host is Indianapolis Colts’ quarterback Peyton Manning. I have to say I’m never a fan of professional athletes hosting the show, and this will be Manning’s first try at acting. But, ever the SNL fan, I will be watching. Carrie Underwood will serve as musical guest during the show.

Three New Back-to-Back Episodes of Saturday Night Live

If you’re wondering when there is going to be another new episode of Saturday Night Live, wonder no more. December is going to deliver the gift of three new episodes with some promising guest hosts. Kicking off the month on December 2nd, Lost star Matthew Fox hosts with Tenacious D as the musical guest. Predictions on whether or not there will be a Lost sketch? On December 9th, Annette Bening will host with musical guest Gwen Stefani, who is promoting her second solo album. I’m looking forward to Bening’s debut appearance—she really has impeccable timing and it will be interesting to see what they throw at her. And, to round out the month, the December 16th episode will feature Justin Timberlake as both host and musical guest. Timberlake appeared in 2003 and did a surprisingly good job—he is really up for just about anything and it’s a lot of fun to watch him give it his all.
I know, I know, SNL can often fail to please… but that hasn’t stopped me from watching it ever since I was a kid waaaay back when. For all the mediocre sketches, there are always bound to be gems. It’s a television institution, for goodness sake.

30 Rock Premiere Available Online

I guess not everyone will share my sentiment about 30 Rock, starring Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin—there are a lot of negative comments out there about the show—but I’m really looking forward to Wednesday’s premiere. Perhaps I was in the minority, but I just loved Fey on Weekend Update on Saturday Night Live and think her writing for the film Mean Girls was fantastic. Alec Baldwin is always a showstopper for me too. Any time he’s hosted SNL, he’s been incredibly funny, with excellent timing. I know, I know, there is already the behind-the-scenes-look-at-a-late-night-sketch-comedy-show on Studio 60, but try and give this one a chance.
That said, you can view the entire premiere episode at NBC.com—in advance of the premiere on Wednesday night. I’m dying to see it, but alas, will have to wait until tomorrow to check it out because I’ve just been too busy. Whether you watch it online or catch it on NBC Wednesday at 8:00 PM, I’d love to hear what you think of it. Good—Bad—or just, eh? Amy Poehler, Tina Fey Hit the Big Screen

The pairing of Amy Poehler and Tina Fey may be over at the Weekend Update desk at Saturday Night Live, but they will be starring in a comedy film together. The film Baby Mama is about a single woman who wants to have a child, but is too committed to her professional life to give it up for pregancy. She turns to a surrogate, and the laughs ensue. There are no specifics about which funny lady will play which role, but the film does come from the co-writer of the Austin Power sequels. Production will not begin until next summer, after Poehler is done with SNL and Fey with her new series, 30 Rock. Look for Poehler in the upcoming movies Spring Breakdown, Southland Tales, Tenacious D in ‘The Pick of Destiny’ and Blades of Glory.

Weekend Update Co-anchor Announced

Despite the rumors that Jason Sudeikis would be taking over for Tina Fey on Saturday Night Live‘s Weekend Update, it’s just been announced that Seth Meyers will be taking on the job. This comes from show creator and executive producer Lorne Michaels today, so it seems the rumors have finally been put to rest. Amy Poehler will continue her co-anchor spot on the Update segment. There were four cast members who auditioned for the job, but Michaels found Meyers to have the best chemistry with Poehler. Meyers is also one of the head writers for the show. Of the recent cast downsizing at SNL, Michaels said: “The show has succeeded and prospered to some degree on its ability to reinvent itself, and this was a time for everything to be re-examined.” Check out all the big changes when SNL begins on September 30th. Funny Guy Will Ferrell Developing Comedy for HBO

And speaking of former SNL cast members (see article below about the recent firings), Will Ferrell will bring the comedy P.E. to HBO. The premise of the series is a major league baseball pitcher who, after failing at professional sports, returns to his hometown to teach phys ed at his former middle school. He’ll also have to make up with the people from his town that he snubbed when he left to become a ball player. Along with his production company partner Adam McKay, Ferrell was able to sign on with HBO—the Hollywood Reporter is reporting that the deal is “one of the pay cable network’s richest development deals.” Writers Jody Hill, Ben Best and Danny McBride will pen the series; they wrote and starred in “The Foot Fist Way,” an indie kung fu comedy. McKay and Ferrell wrote this summer’s hit, “Talladega Nights: The Legend of Ricky Bobby,” starring Ferrell and directed by McKay. Got all that? At any rate, funny people behind a funny premise—on HBO. Oh, and I couldn’t resist this picture of Will playing the cowbell.

Three SNL Cast Members Get Pink Slips

Early SNL firing rumors are now official. E! Online is reporting that a press release for the upcoming 32nd season omitted the names of three cast members’ names: unfortunately, Chris Parnell, Horatio Sanz and Finesse Mitchell will not be returning this season. The news comes as a “non-announcement,” since neither NBC nor Saturday Night Live released any official statement about the cast. Early rumors pegged Parnell and Sanz as fired, but did not predict Mitchell would not be returning. Instead, most were reporting that it would be Kenan Thompson or Darrell Hammond that would get the axe. Sanz had made a statement about a month ago to the Chicago Sun-Times, saying “I haven’t been approached with anything that’s led me to believe I won’t be back.” Seems the decision may have come as a surprise to him. NBC rep Marc Liepis doesn’t believe there is any ill-will about the decision, saying “I believe there were mutual choices made. When you’re on the show for eight years, I don’t think you look at it as a firing.” Both Parnell and Sanz have been on SNL for eight years, while Mitchell had only a three year run.
Saturday Night Live will air on September 30th, with host Dane Cook and musical guest The Killers. No official word yet on who will be taking over Tina Fey’s chair on Weekend Update, although early rumors pegged Jason Sudeikis. Guess we’ll know for sure on the 30th.
