HBO renews Game of Thrones for two more seasons

Game of Thrones Season 5

HBO has announced that it's ordered two additional seasons of Game of Thrones, which just started its fourth season this past Sunday. It makes sense, as the show was recently recognized as the most torrented television show out there, proving its popularity. Even with the rampant piracy, the season 3 finale was seen by over 5 million people.

If you didn't realize, Game of Thrones is based on A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin. It's comprised of five books, which two more to come. This means that Game of Thrones producers have plenty of content to pull from. In fact, Game of Thrones seasons 3 and 4 are based on Storm of Swords, the third novel in the series.

"Game of Thrones is a phenomenon like no other," said Michael Mobardo, president of HBO programming. "David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, along with their talented collaborators, continue to surpass themselves, and we look forward to more of their dazzling storytelling."

The Game of Thrones season 4 premier garnered 6.6 million viewers. To put that into perspective, that is the most-viewed HBO show since the last episode of The Sopranos brought in 12 million viewers in 2007. Game of Thrones is expected to have a 7 or 8 season run when all is said and done.

Quote of the Day: Wendy Williams on Beyonce Documentary

Beyonce and Wendy Williams

"I am a Beyonce fan and I am going to be watching this documentary even if she doesn't introduce us to new stuff... I want to watch it. Fortunately one of the TVs in our kitchen has closed captioning so I can understand what she says -  because you know Beyonce can’t talk. Beyonce sounds like she has a fifth grade education... I just said, I'm a fan but lets call a spade a spade."

- Talk show host Wendy Williams anticipates Beyonce's upcoming HBO documentary, set to air Febuary 16, 2013.

Kirstie Alley: Cable TV’s Most Wanted

Kirstie Alley, Dancing With the Stars

For some celebs, Dancing With the Stars is a great career move. TV Land and HBO have both recently approached Kirstie Alley since she’s been on the show, asking her to headline two scripted comedy series.

Of the TV Land project, Alley said the series is “being written for me right now that I really love the concept of.” She had less information about the HBO gig; there’s no plot in place at the moment. Either way, we'd love to see Kirstie on a comedy series again.

Kate Winslet in Mildred Pierce

"It never occurred to me, beyond the moment of reading those scripts, 'Wow, this is television, therefore it's going to be different somehow.' Sure we have more to shoot ... but the level of determination and level of focus was so much more intense than certainly any film I've ever been apart."

2011 Golden Globe Nominations (TV)

Boardwalk Empire

The Golden Globe contenders for the 2010-11 season were officially announced Tuesday morning in Beverly Hills by Katie Holmes, Josh Duhamel and Blair Underwood.

Last year's Best Comedy Series winner, Glee, lead all television programs with a total of five nominations. Five series -- 30 Rock, Boardwalk Empire, Dexter, The Good Wife and Mad Men -- tied for second place with three nods each.

Here are some of the notable omissions/inclusions from this year's list of nominees:

  • The Good Wife was the only non-cable series to be recognized for Best Drama.
  • The Walking Dead replaced that other horror series (True Blood), giving AMC two nominations in the Drama category.
  • The limitations of the Best Supporting Actor category meant only two acting noms for the cast of Modern Family.
  • Jennifer Love Hewitt has found herself pitted against Claire Danes ... and Dame Judi Dench.

The 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards -- hosted again by Ricky Gervais -- will air Jan. 16 on NBC.

Big Love Coming to a Big End

Big Love

Let’s hope TLC brings back the action, because it’s soon going to end on HBO. It was just announced that Big Love's upcoming fifth season will also double as its last.

According to the show’s producers, the decision to end the program was simply storyline-dictated.

“When we created Big Love in 2002, we had a strong conception of the journey the Henrickson family would make over the course of the series, of the story we had to tell,” creators Mark V. Olsen and Will Scheffer said in a statement. “While we were in the writers’ room this year shaping our fifth season, we discovered that we were approaching the culmination of that story.”

Mark and Will did offer fans some good news to help offset the disappoinment. “This coming January, we look forward to presenting our audience with the most vibrant and satisfying final season of a television series that we can produce,” the duo promised.

Big Love will begin its farewell on January 16.
