ABC Announces Renewed Shows

Now that we are days away from a probable end to the writers strike, ABC has felt comfortable talking about the network’s future. Although the rest of 2007-08 remains unclear, the 2008-09 year is starting to take shape.
A total of nine shows have so far received renewal notices from the Alphabet network. That’s not to say more won’t come. But many programs not currently listed may have reason to be nervous.
Of the shows returning this fall, five are ‘veterans’; four are newbies that survived their freshman year. Those programs (in alphabetical order) are: Brothers & Sisters, Desperate Housewives, Dirty Sexy Money, Grey’s Anatomy, Lost, Private Practice, Pushing Daisies, Samantha Who? and Ugly Betty.
A sampling of those not mentioned include October Road, Carpoolers, Cavemen, Boston Legal, Men in Trees and Women’s Murder Club. (Big Shots is apparently dead already.)

‘Star Jones’, ‘Montel Williams’ Cancelled
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Daytime, Talk Shows, Cable, Syndication, Cancellations,
Somewhere, Barbara Walters must be secretly laughing right now.
Star Jones Reynolds, the woman who once occupied a seat on The View, is already looking for a new job. After only six months on the air, truTV (formerly Court TV) officially turned off the lights on the The Star Jones Show today. The program’s demise was announced only earlier this week. In a statement, the network said the decision was “due to the rebranding and programming refocus of the network.” (In other words, the channel was moving on and Star wasn’t coming with them.)
The end of Reynolds’ show, though, does not mean a departure for her from the channel. As part of her goodbye gift, Star was given the opportunity to serve as a guest legal correspondent on the daily program that is replacing hers: Arrest & Trial.

Elisabeth Hasselbeck Forces Barry Manilow to Cancel
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Daytime, Talk Shows, ABC, Syndication,
I’m not sure whether to consider this silly or hilarious…but I’m going with the latter.
Crooner Barry Manilow has apparently canceled a scheduled appearance on tomorrow’s episode of The View. The reason? A disagreement in politics. The Copacabana singer told TMZ that he considers conservative Elisabeth Hasselbeck to be ‘dangerous and offensive’. Although he’s currently on a promotional tour, he is refusing to ‘share the same stage as her’ because of their differences in opinions. It’s not clear why the gig was ever scheduled to begin with.
Any guess how long it will take Rosie O’Donnell to write a haiku about this?

Fox Cancels Anchorwoman
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Prime Time, Reality, FOX, Cancellations, News, Ratings,
As we mentioned earlier, the new series Anchorwoman revolved around a small TV station’s desperate attempt to garner ratings. KYTX of Tyler, TX knew that hiring an inexperienced buxom blonde would bring them attention—and figured they had nowhere to go but up.
While it’s too soon to say if Lauren Jones was worth the station’s gamble, the network has already determined the price was too high. After only one episode, Fox has pulled the plug. But those truly interested by the show’s content can still see the remaining four episodes via Fox’s website.

Trump’s Celebrity Stable
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Prime Time, Reality, NBC, Apprentice, The - Donald, Rumors,
Though NBC canceled Donald Trump’s Apprentice, you just can’t keep the Donald down. Here’s what happened: NBC, who is failing miserably in the ratings department, canceled the Apprentice. Evidently, they realized the small ratings they were getting from the reality show was reason enough to stick – so they cancelled the cancellation. This time, Trump’s idea is to use celebrities. Recently, Trump told the New York Post that he’s in negotiations with Britney Spears. Kimora Lee Simmons, Carmen Electra, Joan Rivers, Naomi Judd, and George Foreman are already part of the reality cast. Trump also said that Paris Hilton wants to be involved, but he doesn’t know if they’re going to add her to the cast or not.

Simply Sad: Paris and Nicole Say Good-Bye
Well, that’s it. After three successful seasons on FOX and two more on E!, Paris and Nicole will no longer be living The Simple Life. I have to admit it, I love the show. I actually broke down in tears during this year’s season premiere, which showed a reconciling Paris and Nicole. What can I say? I’m a sucker for really bad TV. E! will air the final season finale of The Simple Life this coming Sunday, which will feature a play written and directed by Hilton and Richie, a tribute to their friendship together. Though E! enjoyed good ratings with the fourth season of The Simple Life, Paris and Nicole, 26 and 25 respectively, are moving past the point when silly pranks, antics, and acting up can be considered cute. Richie will become a mother before the year is out, Paris has turned into an humanitarian, and tomorrow I fully expect Hell to freeze over.

The Simple Life Gets the Axe
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Reality, Cable, Cable/Satellite, Cancellations,
The television gods have answered my TV prayers and cancelled The Simple Life. Good riddance! The reality show, which starred Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie, followed the pair as they had various jobs and experiences that contradicted their posh existences. Don’t get me wrong, I have seen a few episodes here and there—marvelling at just how stupid they are, then wondering if it’s all an act—but their stupidity couldn’t capture my attention for long. Add to that the media blitz that accompanied the recent trouble they’ve gotten themselves into (Paris finishing her jail time and committing to a life of do-goodery and Nicole set to serve her four days) and I’ve just completely lost interest in them. And yet, as if people care, Nicole will be doing an interview soon to talk about herself and and formally let the world know if she is indeed pregnant. Having said all of this, I still continue to write about the pair—not a fan, by any stretch of either of them, and hoping that this cancellation is just the beginning of the world closing down their seemingly endless 15 minutes of fame. One can only hope.

Fans Save Jericho From Cancellation
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Drama, Prime Time, CBS, Cancellations, Internet, Ratings, Renewals,
Fans of Jericho were not happy when it was announced that the show would not be renewed for the fall. In addition to the usual email and letter writing campaigns to save the show, faithful fans donated money to a fund that delivered peanuts to the network. Peanuts? Huh? I didn’t get it either, but apparently it’s a shout out to a line that star Skeet Ulrich said during the show’s season finale. And the nuts did the trick, because the executives have since reversed their decision and are in talks to get the stars and writers back on board for another season. “You got our attention; your emails and collective voice have been heard,” CBS Entertainment President Nina Tassler wrote in a letter to the fans. “In success, there is the potential for more. But, for there to be more Jericho, we will need more viewers.” To gain some momentum heading into the fall season, the network will re-air the first season over the summer, show episodes online, and release a season one DVD. And what about those peanuts? By all accounts, approximately 50,000 pounds of peanuts were delivered to CBS—they plan to donate them to charity.
