Mia Michaels Returns to So You Think You Can Dance

Mia MichaelsWell, that didn’t take very long.

Mia Michaels, who announced her departure from So You Think You Can Dance just over three months ago, made a brief (?) return to the show on Tuesday.

The choreographer and occasional judge sat alongside Nigel Lythgoe and Adam Shankman when the auditions hit New York City. It’s not known whether Michaels - who left the program to focus on other projects - will have other appearances during Season 7.

Mia Michaels Explains Her SYTYCD Exit

Mia MichaelsPaula Abdul may have left her show on less than amicable terms, but that doesn’t mean all FOX judges are unhappy.

In a new interview, Mia Michaels claims her So You Think You Can Dance departure had nothing to do with a contract. It also didn’t have anything to do with Adam Shankman…or a supposed battle with cancer. She simply felt it was time.

“It’s been an amazing five-year journey and I am in a place where I have all these great opportunities that have been presented to me and I am ready to take on all these challenges,” MIchaels told People magazine. “So when I was working on the show, I wasn’t able to really focus on anything else. Now I’m really focusing on these other projects that I can’t pass up. I think that’s pretty much the main reason why I left the show.”

We may still be hours away from the start of ‘s Top 20 competition, but there’s already been a change in the lineup.

Despite postponing Juilliard to appear on the show (and making during the audition phase), contemporary dancer Billy Bell will be off the program altogether. Although the 19-year-old was seen during last night’s pre-taped showcase, an illness has forced him to end his run. He will be replaced tonight by 21-year-old Brandon Dumlao, a hip-hop dancer from California.

According to statement from Bell’s family, continuing with the competition could have meant grave consequences. “We were all very disappointed when we heard the news and Billy was devastated when his doctors told the show that if he continued to dance on the show before he recovered, he could possibly die,” it read. While a specific diagnosis was not mentioned, Us Weekly reports Billy is being treated for mononucleosis.
