Test Trivia Knowledge with VH1

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Games, Prime Time, Reality, Cable, Renewals,

DescriptionVH1 is bringing back the World Series of Pop Culture for a second season this summer, promising more obscure trivia, more teams of three, and more money to give away. Though VH1 has been known for coming up with some real bombs in the past (what exactly is the deal with Charm School?), the World Series of Pop Culture last year offered a bevy of interesting trivia and quite a few teams that were almost impossible to root for. Will this year’s competitors hold more appeal?

‘Lady or a Tramp’ by Trump

Donald Trump You can’t keep The Donald down. So what if The Apprentice fizzled? That guy can put his name on any reality series and he’s bound to get a viewer or two. He’s currently developing a show with Fox (take that, NBC!), called Lady or a Tramp, where wild ladies will be tamed in charm school. Hmm… sounds vaguely familiar to the Flavor of Love Girls: Charm School, doesn’t it? What’s the difference here—will Trump add an air of refinement? I’ll be curious to see it because when I come across Charm School, I can’t seem to look away. Will Trump be gracing our screen, shouting out the next catch phrase akin to “You’re Fired”? If we’re lucky, he may just be the executive producer, but pop in from time to time to check on the girls. Casting is in the works, so try out if you fit the bill for (according to the casting notice) “rude and crude party girls… younger women who are 18-30, love to party and full of attitude.” Where do I sign up?

Flavor Flav Next Celeb to Receive Comedy Central Roast

Flavor Flav Really?! I mean, really… Flavor Flav is the next worthy recipient of a Comedy Central roast? Have they run out of celebs or is Flav just a great source of comedic material? According to senior vice president of specials and talent for Comedy Central, Elizabeth Porter, “We only roast the ones we love –- and the world is clearly crazy about this guy. This event will be full of surprises as Flavor Flav is going to experience a whole new kind of love in this Roast.” Um, yeah, right. Well, at any rate, I suppose they can expect excellent viewer numbers based on the uber success of his VH1 reality show, Flavor of Love. It’s certain to be an interesting event, although no specifics on who will be poking fun yet, but you can bet there will be a lot to rib Flav about. His rap and reality show experiences, including his relationship with Brigitte Nielson, as well as his massive reproduction capabilities—Flav has seven children. The Comedy Central Roast of Flavor Flav will air August 12 at 10 p.m.

Tom Sizemore Screws Up Again

Tom SizemoreTom Sizemore just can’t catch a break… only, here’s the thing. He used to be a respectable actor who got parts in Natural Born Killers, Black Hawk Down and Saving Private Ryan, so he was once at the top of his game. He’s had a history with drug addiction, and it seems that he just can’t get cleaned up. He chronicled his rock bottom existence on the VH1 celebreality show, Shooting Sizemore—something I couldn’t stand watching because of what a sad person he’s become. Things just got a little sadder when Sizemore was arrested yesterday with methamphetamine and other drug paraphernalia in his car. This came after Sizemore and his friend threatened to beat up a hotel staff person at the Four Points Sheraton in Bakersfield, California. Will Sizemore ever dig himself out of this downward spiral? And will this latest arrest lock him out of Hollywood altogether?

Casting Underway for Second ‘I Love New York’

VH1 logo Based on the success of VH1’s I Love New York, they’re planning on doing it all over again. To me, this show is painful to watch, but I suppose there’s a certain level of entertainment. Tiffany “New York” Pollard ended the first season by selecting Patrick “Tango” Hunter. He proposed to her on the finale, but later rescinded the offer on the reunion special. Isn’t that convenient? If she’s not engaged, and now she’s heartbroken that her top choice dumped her… well she has no choice but to pick a new suitor on a new season. Clever! Add to that the rumors that she and her mother are both actresses… well, I guess that actually doesn’t have much of an impact on a reality show, really. The new twist this go around is that five of the contestants will be selected by fans at ilovenewyork2.com. If you want to throw your hat into the ring, submit a video, bio and photos for consideration. Casting calls will also take place in Los Angeles, New York, Miami, New Orleans, Chicago, Detroit, and Nashville.

MTV Reunites Las Vegas Cast

The Real WorldYikes. Why on earth would MTV get the Vegas cast of The Real World together again? Well, here’s one theory: that season was one of the highest rated of the whole series. So, ratings gold, I suppose. Plus, they’re probably banking on the fact that none of them have grown up beyond getting hammered and making out in hot tubs. I have to say, that was the last season I watched, and I couldn’t even make it through the entire run that year. The gap between my reality and the Real World cast’s reality was huge that year. I guess I just got older. Huh. Anyway, MTV is bringing them all back together for Reunited: The Real World Las Vegas at the Palms Casino Resort. Series co-creator Jon Murray said, “I know viewers will want to check back into The Palms with the cast and see what they’ve been up to and what they’ll get up to.” Well, if the promos can make any promises of drunken three-ways, I’d say they’ll have a hit. Of course, all but one of that season’s cast have been on Real World/Road Rules Challenge or other MTV shows. And Trishelle Cannatella had a stint on VH1’s The Surreal Life, so you can’t say these folks have used up their 15 minutes just yet. Look for this reunion in late spring.

How President Bush Can Predict the Ending of “I Love New York”

I Love New York

Oh, yeah, I’m going to make this work.  Now, if you’re not familiar with the show, “I Love New York” is not a show wherein people from the South express their adoration for the city I call home while secretly hating it and using the term “Yankees” (the people, not the team) as a curse word.  No, it’s VH1’s “celebreality” (as they feel the need to call it) show about the search for love by Tiffany Pollard aka New York, the two time runner-up of “Flavor of Love,” the dating show staring rapper/timepiece enthusiast Flava Flav and a whole lot of rejects from your local strip clubs, street corners, and free clinics.  New York, who at times has been compared in appearance to a transvestite (in my apartment, anyway), has a gaggle of guys from which to choose, all of whom she has given helpful nicknames like “Pootie” and “12 Pack,” and each week she keeps some and lets the rest go.
At this point in the thrilling competition, our “girl” New York is down to just two dudes, “thuggish” Chance (whose band name is so dumb that I won’t repeat it here for fear of Google forever linking my name and it) and “ninja turtle lookalike” Tango (who, we learned this week, cannot do the tango well, which may mean he’s a fan of Sylvester Stallone when he costars with Kurt Russell).  Whom will she choose now, only to be broken up with at the time of the reunion?  We’ll all find out in two week when the show reaches it’s probably-not-that-thrilling conclusion.

Yet Another Flavor of Love Spinoff

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Reality, Cable, Cable/Satellite,

Flavor FlavFor those of you hanging in there on VH1’s Flavor of Love spinoff, I Love New York—you’re stronger than I am. I stumble across this show from time to time, but can’t commit. And, as if one spinoff of Flav’s show isn’t enough, there’s yet another on the horizon. This time around, Flavor of Love Girls: Charm School will have 13 of Flav’s cast-offs attending (you guessed it) charm school. Mo’Nique is on board for hosting duties, putting the girls through their paces to learn proper etiquette to become well-mannered, respectable women. What’s to keep the girls in the competition, besides being on television? The grand prize is $50,000. Check in out on April 15th at 10 p.m. No doubt it will be a ratings winner like Flavor of Love and I Love New York.

‘I Love New York’ Down to Six Finalists

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Reality, Cable,

VH1 Logo And then there were six. Six crazy dudes vying for the attention of Tiffany “New York” Pollard. This time, she had the men fight it out in basketball and boxing before making another cut. The latest victim was Rico, who never even got to have a date with Tiffany. She matched each suitor up for a one-on-one game against WNBA player Tamara Moore. If they could score before her, they took a place in the “winners circle”. Only two guys scored on Moore, resulting in a duel for a date with New York. White Boy won the coveted prize, with Rico ending up the loser. In the end, Rico was cut loose, with New York saying he was a “young boy.” He got the last word when he said her choice was “crap.” Ahhh, love. VH1 celebreality style.

“I Love New York” is a Ratings Winner for VH1

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Reality, Cable, Ratings,

Flavor Flav Move over Flavor Flav. There’s new VH1 ratings royalty in town. None other than your castoff—not once, but twice—Tiffany “New York” Pollard. That’s right, crazy as it may seem, the debut of I Love New York, the spin off of Flavor of Love, garnered the highest ratings for the network. The series premiere on Monday, January 8th had the most viewers of any other premiere on VH1. “New York” displayed so much personality on both seasons of Flavor of Love that VH1 called her in for her own series. The premise is a spin on Flavor of Love, with New York choosing from a herd of eligible bachelors. The new show has paid off for VH1, drawing 4.4 million viewers and overall earning the prize for the highest-rated cable program on Monday. The debut saw New York cutting the first five bachelors.
