Friday Ratings: Dollhouse Down, Betty Up

Do viewers watch programs they know are being canceled? Based on Dollhouse‘s ratings last night, probably not. The FOX drama returned this weekend to series-low ratings. Elsewhere, fans of Ugly Betty did their best to keep that ABC comedy from the chopping block.

Vanessa Williams on Ugly Betty8pm

  • (8.2 million, 1.9/7 in 18-49) had the best numbers of the night.
  • Muppets Christmas: Letters To Santa (1.1/4) entertained 4.3 million for NBC.
  • ABC’s Dreams Come True special (0.9/3) saw 3.7 million tune in.
  • (0.8/3) averaged 2.1 million over two hours.
  • * (1.8 million, 0.8/3) added on 200,000.

Friday Ratings: ABC Has Animated Evening

Would ABC be smart to air cartoons every Friday night? The weekend’s broadcast of Shrek the Third helped give the network a rare tie in the 18-49s. CBS, though, was still a solo winner with the viewers.

This Week on TV (11/2-11/8)

V

(Make sure to check out TV Envy’s Programming Schedule.)

MONDAY (11/2)
  • Heroes (NBC, 8pm):  “Hiro has another chance to save Charlie (Glee‘s Jayma Mays) when he travels three years into the past, where he also encounters Samuel.” NBC has now resorted to reversing time to steal FOX’s thunder.
  • Accidentally on Purpose (CBS, 8:30pm):  “Billie and Zack have their first big fight after Zack, hoping to surprise Billie, installs a low-flow toilet without consulting her first.” She didn’t appreciate having to flush twice after her #2’s.
  • The Big Bang Theory (CBS, 9:30pm):  “Sheldon tries to teach Leonard the fundamentals of football.” Despite his wealth of knowledge, Sheldon still couldn’t explain the cheese-on-heads ritual.

Friday Ratings: Smallville Shows Strength

Every once in a while a move to Fridays isn’t such a bad thing. Although some shows have been known to fade away, CW’s Smallville actually hit a season high with the 18-49s this weekend. That performance, of course, didn’t keep CBS from winning in both the viewers and the demos.

Smallville8pm

  • (8.3 million, 2.0/7 in 18-49) was down by 200,000.
  • (7 million, 1.4/5) also fell by 200,000.
  • (4.8 million, 1.3/4) added on 100,000.
  • A 2-hour * repeat (3.8 million, 1.2/4) did better than last week’s programming.
  • (2.6 million, 1.2/4) picked up 100,000.

Friday Ratings: Mediocre Return for Ugly Betty

Friday Ratings: Weak Return for Dollhouse

Attention Dollhouse producers - get Summer Glau on quick! Had I not known that Dollhouse premiered last Friday, I would have assumed by the program’s numbers that it was still in repeats. Unfortunately, the Joss Whedon-created series made its return with the lowest demos for any original that evening. (It’s lead-in - Brothers—didn’t fare much better.) To make matters worse, the FOX drama also pulled in smaller numbers than several repeats.

Eliza Dushku8pm

  • Ghost Whisperer (8.6 million, 2.2/8 in 18-49) was down 700,000 from last fall.
  • (1.3/5) kicked off its 20th season with 6.3 million.
  • A FlashForward* repeat (1.5/5) had 4.6 million blacking out.
  • (1.0/4) kept 2.8 million amused.
  • (1.0/4) debuted to 2.5 million.
