Benedict Cumberbatch ‘Cynical’ About New Sherlock Holmes Show

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Drama, Prime Time, BBC, CBS, Gossip,

Elementary vs. SherlockBenedict Cumberbatch is a "bit cynical" about Elementary.

The British actor plays the leading character in the UK's Sherlock, and while he wishes those in the US show - which also tells the story of fictional detective Sherlock Holmes in a modern setting - the "best of luck," he did tell lead actor Jonny Lee Miller he would rather he didn't take part.

"It's very odd. I did say to Jonny, 'Well, I'd prefer you didn't do it but you've got a kid to feed, a nice house in Los Angeles and a wife to keep in good clothes.' When you get used to a certain standard of living and they waft a paycheck at you, what are you going to do? I think Jonny was like, 'Mate, I've got a f**king mountain to climb here, you've got nothing to fear.' I wish him the best of luck, but I'm a bit cynical about why they've chosen to do it and why they cast him," he said.

Jonny Lee MillerJonny Lee Miller has been cast in a new Sherlock Holmes project.

The actor is to play the fictional British detective - created by author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in the 19th century - in CBS pilot Elementary, and if it proves to be successful a full series will be commissioned.

The show - named after the character's famous catchphrase - will see Holmes leave his traditional 221b Baker Street home in London to solve mysteries in New York. By coincidence, his friend Benedict Cumberbatch - whom he starred with in Danny Boyle's theatre production of Frankenstein - plays the detective in BAFTA Award-winning BBC series Sherlock, which is set in modern times.

Robert Doherty - who has worked on Medium and Star Trek: Voyager - is lined up to write show, which will air in late 2012 if it gets the green light.

In recent years, Sherlock Holmes has seen a huge resurgence in popularity. As well as the TV series starring Cumberbatch, Guy Ritchie has also brought the character back to life on the big screen with Robert Downey Jr. portraying Holmes and Jude Law playing his trusty sidekick Dr. John Watson in their traditional historical setting.

Katie Holmes

Five years after moving on from Joey Potter, has decided to make a more mature return to TV. On ABC’s , the actress will play a non-profit lawyer who eventually connects with Jonny Lee Miller. The one-episode stint will reunite Holmes with exec producer Greg Berlanti, another Dawson’s Creek vet.

Katie’s small screen role won’t be the only non-film project for her this year. She is currently in rehearsals for her September Broadway debut.

I guess it’s in Holmes’ best interest to keep busy. Otherwise, she’ll sit around wondering why she didn’t participate in .

Singer George Michael To Appear on ABC Show

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Comedy, Prime Time, ABC,

George MichaelAlmost 10 years after his infamous public bathroom arrest, George Michael will once again be appearing on American television sets—but this time, he won’t be the subject of a news report.  The singer is scheduled to appear in ABC’s mid-season drama, Eli Stone.

Stone stars (a.k.a. ex-husband #1) as a man who suffers hallucinations and believes he might be a prophet.  (Seeing visions of George Michael singing ‘Faith’ will do that to a guy.)  Although Michael was originally scheduled to be in the pilot only, the producers have since asked him to sing and act in two more episodes.

Interestingly enough, George told the BBC recently that he has been unsuccessful in giving up his marijuana habit.  I wonder what ABC’s parent company (Disney) will think about that news…

Victor GarberOh, Mr. Victor Garber, is there nothing you can’t do? Man, this guy seems to get deal after deal. Case in point, his latest gig on the ABC legal drama pilot Eli Stone. The show will also star Jonny Lee Miller, an attorney at a top San Francisco law firm. Oh yeah, and Miller’s character discovers that he might be a prophet. Garber is on hand as the senior partner at the firm and father to Eli Stone’s fiancee. Garber is fresh off the cancelled show Justice—also a legal drama. And, of course, who could forget him for his role on the ABC hit Alias? Garber has been nominated for six Emmys, three of which were for his role as Jack Bristow on Alias. And, oh my gosh, have you ever seen him as Daddy Warbucks in the 1999 TV movie Annie? Genius.
