CBS Facing Huge Lawsuit from Dan Rather

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: CBS, News,

Dan RatherWell-known anchorman is suing CBS to the tune of $70 million, saying the network made him a “scapegoat.” Rather, now retired, had his last few months of TV history marred by a discredited story about President George W. Bush’s National Guard service. Now, Dan’s looking for a little payback, claiming CBS mishandled the story. Rather’s lawsuit names two CBS execs in the suit. Dan Rather was a leading anchor on CBS Evening News, which is now suffering with at the helm. A CBS spokesperson has responded to Rather by saying the suit is “without merit.” Dan Rather narrated a Sept. 2004 report that said Bush skirted some of his National Guard duties, and the former newsman still says the story is true. CBS, however, fired three news executives for airing the story, saying it was neither fair nor accurate.

A Look at Kid Nation’s National Premiere

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Kids, Prime Time, Reality, CBS, Gossip,

CBS LogoAfter all the controversy and news articles, premiered Wednesday night on CBS. Forty children between the ages of 8 and 15 were put in a New Mexico ghost town for forty days, and thus the news stories began. After rumors of lawsuits and complaints from parents, CBS kept Kid Nation under wraps for the early fall premiere. The network didn’t even send out media copies of the first episode, which featured the first four days’ of life in Kid Nation. But is Kid Nation really reality? Adult host Jonathon Karsh is onscreen a great deal of the time, and the kids obviously got a lot of suggestions from show insiders. Arranged into classes, the kids performed stunts to win privileges and prizes, and made a surprisingly smart decision when faced with having either a TV or seven new outhouses. Despite the young breakout stars of the series, the bottom line still remains: it’s TV, and beyond that it’s reality TV. There’s a whole lot of adult supervision and suggestion going on behind the scenes, no matter what CBS editing would have us believe.

The 59th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards Coverage

Emmy AwardsThe 59th Annual Emmy Awards has not even started, yet I’m already sensing sensing a weird vibe about tonight’s telecast.  Will the show be a celebration of those young and new (e.g. Heroes)?  Will it be a tribute to those bowing out (James Gandolfini and crew)?  Or will performer Kanye West somehow manage to cast a controversial shadow over the rest of the ceremony?

What a difference a year makes.  Twelve months ago, we were still handing out trophies to stars from Will & Grace and The West Wing (those shows feel so five-years ago now).  Today, we welcome a new crop of nominees including Ugly Betty and 30 Rock for Best ComedyLast year, we were entertained by an always-hilarious Conan O’Brien.  This year, we are threatened by a song and dance number from this year’s host, Ryan Seacrest.  Last August, 24 snagged the award for Best Drama.  This September, it’s not even nominated (yet somehow Boston Legal is).

I think it would be safe to assume the voters would predictably (and respectfully) shower The Sopranos with honors, but I’ll still be crossing my fingers for an upset sometime tonight.  We’ll need something to talk about tomorrow…

Here’s the play-by-play of tonight’s events coming to you from the neglected West Coast!

Survivor Returns, This Time In Panama

Posted by Rhys Alexander Categories: Prime Time, Reality, CBS,

Survivor PanamaCBS has announced the cast for the twelfth season of Survivor, premiering February 2nd. This edition of the reality mega-hit takes place in Panama, and features the standard cast of model-type Gen X and Y-ers, with the occasional middle-aged anomaly to add ‘balance.’ At this early stage, I predict Misty as the winner, a beauty who looks like she’s hiding something under that innocent smile. Of course, we’ll have to wait and see what drama unfolds. Who do you think will make it to the final round? Place your bets below!

Survivor:  It Keeps Going and Going..

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Prime Time, Reality, CBS, News,

SurvivorFunny – I always thought that Survivor was getting a bit tired, but what do I know?  Apparently most viewers don’t share my sentiments, which is why CBS has already ordered two more seasons of the reality show.  This is in addition to the 12th version that has yet to be filmed.  It’s interesting how quickly that other Mark Burnett production, The Apprentice, has started to wane over the years yet Survivor keeps going strong.  Of course—once Jeff Probst finally gets around to admitting that he is fed up babysitting stinky contestants, Survivor will have officially jumped the shark.  But then again, I think that happened a few years ago when women started stripping for peanut butter…
