Project Runway Season 4: Sweet P Says Goodbye

Sweet PThere was a major twist on last night’s on Bravo. The last runway show before the remaining designers compete at New York Fashion Week produced two clear finalists: and .  The third finalist is still undecided.

The judges were deadlocked over whether to go with or , so they decided to let both designers create their final collections for Fashion Week. Right before the actual runway show (which, of course, has already happened), the judges will rate Chris and Rami’s three strongest pieces to decide which designer is the official, third finalist.

Unfortunately, this episode was the last hurrah for .

The designers learned of their final challenge before Fashion Week at the epicenter of art in America: New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. Christian, Chris, Jillian, Rami and Sweet P had private access to the three wings that house the museum’s Greek and Roman art, European paintings and the Temple of Dendur from Egypt. They had 45 minutes to take photographs and find one piece in particular to inspire their design.

No surprise here, Rami made a beeline for the Greek and Roman art saying he’d found a soul mate in a sculpture of Aphrodite wearing a draped Grecian gown.  Christian, who worked under famed European designers Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood, chose a painting of a man in Spanish military garb in the European art section. Chris, who joked that Joan Rivers carved her initials into the ancient Egyptian temple they toured, selected a painting of an 18th century noblewoman in a luxurious, pewter gown. Jillian took her inspiration from Master of the Argonauts, a 15th-century Florentine painting depicting a battle scene. Sweet P used a lush Dutch painting featuring a peacock motif to inspire her design.

The designers got $300 and two days to complete their garments. also warned them about how important hair and makeup would be to this runway show…a perfect opportunity for a somewhat pointless scene with consulting makeup artist for L’Oreal Paris, Collier Strong.

The first day was a familiar mix of 21-year old wunderkind Christian pointing out how annoyingly fast he sews, Jillian freaking out that other designers were making fun of her obsessive attention to detail, mad draper Rami defending his love affair with draping, Sweet P worrying that she wouldn’t finish on time and Chris March talking to his dress and taking a nap.

Here is how their designs panned out with the judges:

  • Christian: His design featured long, slimly-tapered black pants: a white blouse with large, puffy sleeves and ruffled hemline and a black loosely-structured vest-like garment that went over the blouse. Christian said the painting inspired him to use a masculine theme in a feminine way. The judges were floored. Guest judge and international designer Robert Cavalli called it true haute couture and designer called it “super, super, super chic.”  Christian emerged as the designer with the strongest point of view and won the challenge.
  • Jillian: The 26-year-old Ralph Lauren illustrator who says she is sick of sitting in a cubicle and contributing to someone else’s vision,  presented a stunning jacket and dress ensemble wholly inspired by her painting’s Florentine theme but totally modern at the same time. Robert Cavalli loved the intricate details on the black and gold accent jacket, particularly on the back. The jacket’s structure was the perfect counterpoint to the gold, pleated mini-dress underneath. Elle magazine’s said she was pleasantly surprised by the design, the rest of the judges loved it as well. Jillian firmly secured the second finalist spot.
  • Rami: The 34-year-old Jerusalem native decided to hold firm on his passion for draping fabric, even after Tim warned him that the judges wanted to see him do something else besides draping. His interesting lavender, off-the-shoulder cocktail dress was beautifully made and completely commercial but as predicted the judges simply weren’t wowed by it. Still Rami’s technical skills and past work were enough for the judges to give him and Chris March one last shot to compete for a spot at in the Project Runway finale at .
  • Chris March: The 44-year-old costume designer said he was privileged to get the chance to turn master works of art into beautiful clothes. His shimmery gown with dramatic neckpiece, while immaculately constructed, was a bit too reminiscent of the design that he and Christian won with in the avant-garde challenge, at least according to Michael Kors. Robert Cavalli loved it, saying the dress was art and haute couture. In the end the judges agreed Chris is the kind of designer who will put on a good show no matter what. They were intrigued enough to give him one last chance to win a spot at Bryant Park.
  • Sweet P: She took the sumptuous peacock theme of her Dutch painting and turned it into a totally wearable, silk daytime dress in purple, teal and rusty red silk. The judges liked the dress, calling it flattering and wearable but Michael Kors questioned whether it was high-fashion or just a really nice, commercial piece. Sweet P was out. Though tearful, she handled her loss with grace saying everything happens for a reason. (Technically Sweet P Vaughn did show at Fashion Week as to not give away the secret of who ended up in the Project Runway finals.)

Next week all the designers will be back for the obligatory reunion show. The show will reveal the designer voted by Bravo viewers as the “Fan Favorite”, it also promises to answer questions like: “What happened to Jack after he got sick and left the show?”, “Does loveably strange Elisa still spit on her designs to imbue them with life force?” and “Does Kevin still look like ‘N Sync’s ?”

The Project Runway Season 4 reunion airs next Wednesday night at 10 p.m. Eastern and Pacific on . The two-part finale begins February 27.
