Oscar Hosts Not Using Ricky Gervais as a Model

“I can guarantee that if you’re looking for someone to call people out, we’re not your hosts,” Anne Hathaway recently told The Hollywood Reporter.

Her comment is a reference to the Golden Globes as hosted by Ricky Gervais. The British comedian won a lot of laughs, and raised plenty of eyebrows, with his none-too-subtle barbs aimed at those in the filmmaking industry.

“I think that humor is really difficult to pull off, and I’m not particularly adept at it. I wouldn’t feel comfortable doing it,” Hathaway continued. She’ll be co-hosting the Academy Awards this year with actor James Franco. In the video above, the pair explain how they happened to be paired up as hosts for the event.

“I don’t mean to sound overly serious, but I am the youngest host in history and I have no business being cynical or calling anyone out. I certainly haven’t earned the right to do that.”

Some might disagree. Hathaway has been getting awards nods since 1999, and her co-host James Franco is nominated for on one this year's statues for his 127 Hours performance. But apparently the point is moot, since the pair will have little to do with the show’s presentation. “The show was pretty much laid out when we were asked,” she explained. “We’re not writing the jokes or the scenarios but we are collaborating with the writers to figure out what fits.”
