The girls of Hellcats got catty on Tuesday night’s episode “Fancy Dan.” As the title suggests, this installment marked the return of Dan Patch (Matt Barr), who’s been MIA since the “Think Twice Before You Go” episode that aired back in December.

Fans were reminded right away that Hellcats coach Vanessa Lodge (Sharon Leal) actually has a fiancé, though we can’t remember the last time we saw him. We also learned that he’s in the Army Reserves... and, he’s just been deployed. This new development violently shoved the date of their wedding into the very near future, and Vanessa was forced to confront her unresolved feelings for football coach Red Raymond (Jeff Hephner).

But, theirs isn’t the only love triangle. Dan’s brother, whose name we didn’t bother to catch, is getting married. The event has been mentioned for weeks, and on Tuesday it finally arrived. When Marti (Aly Michalka) revealed to BFF and roommate Savannah (Ashley Tisdale) that she’ll be performing at the reception, Savannah found a way to join the wait staff.

Let the catfight begin. Each pulled out a sexy minidress and sharpened their claws -- but, both kittens were beaten out by a cougar. Dan showed up to the wedding with a date, in the form of a bird-rescuing do-gooder named Vicky (Sonja Bennett).

After receiving a bit of fatherly advice, Dan very quickly (too quickly) came to the conclusion that Marti is just a friend, but perhaps Savannah is the real thing. After breaking up with Vicky, he kissed Savannah on the dance floor. And all seems to be forgiven just like that.

Things aren’t so easy with Vanessa. When husband-to-be Derrick Altman (D. B. Woodside) presented the marriage license, she found she could not sign in. They ended things in the most mild breakup scene ever, but instead of running straight to Red she sat alone in her apartment and cried.

It was a pretty easy ending to a lot of mixed-up romantic problems, and we’re not buying it. The March 1 episode, “Don’t Make Promises (You Can’t Keep)” may reveal that matters of the heart aren’t so simple after all.
