Diff’rent Strokes Co-Stars Remember Gary Coleman

Former co-stars have released statements following the news of .

Janet Jackson, who appeared on several episodes of Diff’rent Strokes, will “remember him as the fun, playful, adorable and affectionate man he was. He has left a lasting legacy.” Gary Coleman initially met Janet when he appeared on Good Times, where Jackson starred as a series regular, in 1978.

Todd Bridges, who played ’s older brother Willis, also released a statement. “It’s a sad day. It’s sad that I’m the last kind alive from the show.”

His words serve as a grim reminder of headlines from the late nineties, when news broke that troubled child star Dana Plato had committed suicide. Plato’s son less than three weeks ago. Bridges, 45, was a series regular in every season of Diff’rent Strokes, though his role waned in later episodes. Plato disappeared from the show during the sixth season, when she became pregnant.

Charlotte Rae, who player the Drummond housekeeper on the first season of the show (before she struck gold with the spin-off, Facts of Life), also had regarding the former child actor: “I was with [Gary Coleman] the first year of Diff’rent Strokes, and he was the reason we were such a big hit…He was the centerpiece and we all surrounded him. He was absolutely enchanting, adorable, funny and filled with joy, which he spread around to millions of people all over the world.”

Shannon Price, Gary Coleman’s widow, Friday evening: “We are very grateful for all the wonderful support everyone has been extending to Gary’s family. Thousands of emails have poured into the hospital….Thank you so much for all that you guys have done and for the support and prayers that you guys have given us.”
