Dancing with the Stars 7: Week 3

Last week, eleven couples were vying for ’ mirror ball trophy. Seven days later, we were down to only nine.

Although she had planned to take on the jive tonight, an injury forced Olympic gold medalist Misty May-Treanor to suddenly leave the competition. You can see her explain the incident - and hear the injury happen - below.

So how did the remaining dancers fare in Week 3? You can find out after the jump.

DTWS' Susan Lucci

Susan Lucci (partner Tony Dovolani)

(Dance: Jive/ Song: ‘Why Do Fools Fall in Love’)
I really liked seeing this side of Susan. The style encouraged her to finally have fun. Although Lucci could still afford to loosen up a bit, I thought this was her most energetic performance to date. Her legs seemed to lack extension at points, but I’m not sure if that was a result of her obvious foot injury.

Len said Lucci has been able to keep a constant standard throughout the competition. Bruno thought this was her most energetic dance so far. Although her feet were a little unsteady, he said the heat was finally coming out of her. Carrie Ann said she wants Susan to work on being less bashful and more confident.  Score: 7/7/7 (21)

Lance Bass (partner Lacey Schwimmer)

(Dance: Viennese Waltz/ Song: ‘Let Me Leave’)
Although Lance’s moves were smooth and flaw-free, they simply weren’t ballroomy enough for me. (I’m starting to feel like Len.) I just wish I could I could stop seeing ‘N SYNC every time he dances. didn’t even make me feel this way.

Bruno critiqued Lance’s attempt at the “rise and fall.” He said Bass looked heavy and labored on the down beats. Carrie Ann thought the performance was fantastic. She said it was a nice combination of traditional and contemporary. Len thought the singer was flat-footed. He also wasn’t thrilled about his posture or holds. But he did like his musicality and content. The head judge said it was his best dance yet.  Score: 8/7/7 (22)

Maurice Greene (partner Cheryl Burke)

(Dance: Jive/ Song: ‘Rock Around the Clock’)
I thought Maurice did a great job tonight. He kept up with the fast choreography and threw in a nice leap over Cheryl’s head to boot. His performance was full of energy and his smile was infectious.

Carrie Ann said the untamed beast’s energy worked perfectly well with the style. She liked that he went full throttle. Len thought it was fast, bright and lively. He said it was his best dance yet. Bruno liked the fantastic pace, energy and sense of fun. He also thought Maurice did a good job with his execution.  Score: 8/8/8 (24)

DWTS' Rocco DiSpirito

Rocco DiSpirito (partner Karina Smirnoff)

(Dance: Viennese Waltz/ Song: ‘What’s New Pussycat?’)
This was a very uneven performance for me. Although I liked Rocco’s attempt to stay in character, it felt like he was lumbering through the dance. There were far too many stiff and awkward moments tonight. At times, it looked like he was simply walking across the floor.

Len said he “didn’t mind it.” He thought there were some good elements in the dance. He simply advised Rocco not to rush his performances. Bruno said he lost the musicality shortly after starting. He compared the result to a lump of mashed potatoes. Carrie Ann said the chef was the most improved out of all the dancers. She thought he had a few edges that just needed to be polished up a bit.  Score: 7/7/6 (20)

Warren Sapp (partner Kym Johnson)

(Dance: Viennese Waltz/ Song: ‘Lovin’ U’)
Warren did a fantastic job overcoming the size issue. He was surprisingly light on his feet in this style. He moved across the floor well and did a good job leading his partner.

Bruno thought it was a smooth and beautiful performance. He said the versatile athlete does an incredible job getting into the character of each dance. Carrie Ann was blown away by the “gorgeous” job. Len said Sapp is giving “those skinny people” a run for their money.  Score: 9/8/8 (25)

Cody Linley (partner Julianne Hough)

(Dance: Jive/ Song: ‘Call Me the Breeze’)
Like Warren, Cody was incredibly light on his feet. Unfortunately, the 18-year-old’s timing sometimes felt a bit off during the fast-paced performance. His footwork also had a few sloppy moments.

Carrie Ann thought it was a good, high-energy dance. Unfortunately, she said she could feel him counting his way through. Len said the choreography started off well then got a bit repetitious. He also thought Cody lacked consistent energy. Bruno agreed with Len. He said Linley should have spent less time strumming Julianne’s legs and more time using his talent.  Score: 7/7/7 (21)

DWTS' Toni Braxton

Toni Braxton (partner Alec Mazo)

(Dance: Viennese Waltz/ Song: ‘Fur Elise’)
This performance could best be described as Marie Antoinette meets Falco. Although some might have found Toni’s outfit – and wig – to be distracting, I thought it was a refreshing change of pace. She did a great job keeping in character and managed to move across the floor quite well despite the dress. Her posture, arms and turns were also nice.

Len said he really didn’t like the performance. He could have done without the gimmicks or props. Bruno again agreed with Len. He thought the the dance was overproduced. Carrie Ann, on the hand, really liked it. She thought they touched on the origins of the once scandalous dance.  Score: 8/7/7 (22)

Cloris Leachman (partner Corky Ballas)

(Dance: Jive/ Song: ‘The Girl Can’t Help It’)
Oh dear. Although I have truly loved watching Cloris, it really is time for her to go. I’m honestly not sure if she even did a lick of dancing tonight. For the first 30 seconds, all she did was walk around. If I hadn’t known this was rehearsed, I would have thought Corky was showing her the steps for the first time on that floor.

Bruno said calling that performance “wacky” would be the understatement of the year. He said it was “beyond comprehension.” Carrie Ann said what Cloris lacked in technique, she made up for in charisma. Len said she managed to throw a small basic step somewhere in there.  Score: 6/5/5 (16)

Brooke Burke (partner Derek Hough)

(Dance: Viennese Waltz/ Song: ‘Daughters’)
I can’t remember a time when a DWTS performance has given me chills. I thought it was truly gorgeous. Brooke simply had it all: a nice frame, ease of movement, great posture, lovely arms…everything.

Carrie Ann said Brooke was quickly becoming her favorite dancer of all the seasons. She said Burke’s inner beauty is manifested when she dances. Len thought it was the best dance of the season so far. Bruno said it was dazzingly beautiful.  Score: 9/10/9 (28) **The very first 10 of the season**
