America’s Next Top Model: Cycle 8: The Girls Who Go Down Under

ANTM  With the contestant pool whittled down to the final six girls, Jaslene was worried.  Once a shining star in the group, Jaslene was told at the last elimination that her work was steadily going downhill.  Meanwhile, Jael was enjoying the fact that she could differentiate herself from the other models.

The ladies got a house visit from former contestant, April (ANTM, Cycle 2).  She was there to give them their lesson of the week.  As a model-turned-television correspondent, April taught the girls how to get through several types of potentially dreadful interviews.  The girls then tested out their skills by questioning each other.

The next day the girls met up with April again—only to be interrupted by a person dressed as a kangaroo.  Gee…wonder who that could be??  Tyra then emerged from her costume to announce their upcoming trip to Australia.  The girls were needlessly thrilled—but Natasha was ecstatic.  So much so that she started screaming… and kept screaming.  Tyra then told the girls that the winner of the upcoming challenge would have the opportunity to become a Tyra Show correspondent.

The minute the girls landed in Australia, they were greeted by Erika Heynatz—model, TV presenter and former host of Australia’s ANTM.  Despite the lack of rest, the ladies started on their challenge right away.  Their task?  Do on-street interviews with local Aussies about American fashion faux pas.  The twist?  The interviewers needed to throw in as many Aussie slang words as possible.

The thought of having to memorize a list of anything was incredibly distressing to Brittany.  Cue violin music.  Brittany was hit by a car when she was in high school forcing her to have issues with her short-term memory.  Funny - I thought it was only tight-weaves that affected that part of the brain.  The ladies hit the streets and started talking to the locals.  The girls were successful incorporating some of the native speak to varying degrees….that is, except for Dionne.  All that Yank could manage to say was cool.  Unfortunately, the ladies would have to wait to find out who the winner was.

The next day the girls met up with Jay for their next photo shoot.  This time around they would be using an Australian accent for a CoverGirl commercial shoot.  Brittany was - of course - concerned about having to memorize her lines.  Now is it just me—or did she never bring up this memory issue when she acted with Pedro??  Meanwhile, Natasha had to adjust to technically learning a third language.

Renee started off the shoots with a decent amount of success.  She had some problems with the lines but did manage to keep an accent (even if she did come off sounding like the Crocodile Hunter).  An over-dragged out Jaslene nailed the script without cue cards on her 6th take.  Natasha’s accent fell to the wasteside but she maintained a breezy attitude.  Meanwhile, Jael struggled to become a ‘perky’ spokesmodel and all she gave was attitude.  But in Jael’s defense—at least she didn’t cry.  That honor went to forgetful Brittany.  Although she looked beautiful, she was easily flustered and would give up quickly.

In the end, it was Natasha who came out on top this week.  The judges loved her energy and use of inflections.  Additionally, she was picked as the winner of the Tyra Show/correspondent challenge.  So who then faced a possible trip out of Down Under?  Jael and Brittany.  The judges were already disappointed with Jael’s persona so her poor shoot didn’t help her case.  As for Brittany—she would need to learn how to tackle her problems with scripted commercials if she was ever going to be a spokesmodel.  But who really needs to be able to remember anything when they’re a model, right?  All that matters is smiling pretty and acting perky.  LOSER: Jael
