Vladimir Guerrero makes mockery of World Series stage

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Championship, MLB,

Vladimir GuerreroFans of the Giants were probably the only ones who got anything good out of Game 1 of Wednesday’s World Series debut. That good came in the form of a win and the presence of Vladimir Guerrero. Questions regarding Guerrero’s presence in Ron Washington’s lineup were answered when Vlady showed up in right field for just the 18th time this season, and it cost his team dearly. Vlady made more mistakes than his personal score sheet will indicate, and his team lost the game.

Josh Hamilton set for first World Series

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Championship, MLB,

Josh HamiltonA month ago, Josh Hamilton was just returning from a rib cage injury that had sidelined him for the better part of September. That injury seems like ancient history to the Texas outfielder. Now, he’s expected to carry a Rangers offense through a powerful Giants pitching rotation that includes two-time National League Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum and fellow starter Matt Cain, while the bullpen crowd features Sergio Romo and Grizzly Adams-wannabe Brian Wilson.

San Francisco Giants win series, look to break history

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Championship, MLB, Playoffs,

San Francisco GiantsTalk about Giant killers. The San Francisco Giants made just about every unconventional move you could think of, and it seemed like each decision paid off. They’ll be heading to their first World Series since 1954 to face the Rangers who will be going to their first World Series ever, and without any official announcements, it’s probably safe to assume that two of the game’s best pitchers, Cliff Lee and Tim Lincecum, will be throwing first pitches for their respective teams.

Texas Rangers punch ticket to first World Series

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Championship, MLB, Playoffs,

New York YankeesMaybe everything would have been different if even one umpire ever noticed that Nick Swisher was hit by a pitch. Twice in the ALCS Swisher was hit without a call, resulting in Yankee baserunners advancing and scoring and, at least in Friday night’s game, it couldn’t be more obvious that Swisher took one for the team. If an umpire sends Swisher to first and keeps the runners where they are, maybe we have a whole different space-time continuum and we’re still watching Game 6 right now.

Four aces set to duel in championship series

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB, Playoffs,

Tim Lincecum It is probable that the four best pitchers in baseball represent the four remaining teams in the playoffs. CC Sabathia, Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee and Tim Lincecum are the faces of New York, Philadelphia, Texas and San Francisco, respectively, and all four are fronting the charge to the World Series for their clubs. It’s impossible to answer which ace trumps which ace, as any game featuring any two of these stars very well may end up with a 1-0 score or left to the bullpens to decide.

Cliff Lee makes history with the Texas Rangers

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB, Playoffs,

Cliff LeeIf you ever try to define the word "that," you should start by describing Cliff Lee; as in "Cliff Lee is that good." The oft-traded ace went out on Tuesday night and made pitching look as easy as finger painting in shutting down the Tampa Bay Rays for the second time in their ALDS matchup, setting a number of records along the way. If you saw the game, you could only be left with one thought: "That was one hell of a performance."

Yankees, Rays, Rangers, and Twins struggling to win games at the end

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: MLB, Playoffs,

Carl PavanoThe American League playoff teams are hardly proving their worth. All of the Yankees, Rays, Rangers and Twins have limped their way through the final week of the season. Not a single team has played as good as their record suggests they are, and in some cases, considerably worse. Some of them have rested their better players since clinching a playoff berth, but we’ve barely seen glimpses of competitive baseball from any of them.

Yankees and Rays playing for postseason matchups?

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: MLB, Playoffs,

Cliff LeeThe Rays are currently holding tough onto the AL East title while the Yankees keep pace with them in the Wild Card position. Yeah, technically Boston can still make the postseason, but let’s face reality; we know who the American League playoff teams will be. Minnesota has already clinched the Central and the Rangers have taken the West with relative ease. All that remains to be decided; with a week of baseball left; is who will play whom.

Josh Hamilton finds new injuries in ribs

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Injuries, MLB,

Josh HamiltonWhen Josh Hamilton crashed into the wall while catching a Delmon Young fly ball on Sept. 4, he probably wasn’t thinking about the injuries he might sustain. Now, almost three weeks later, it’s been revealed that he has two fractured ribs and may be out of the Rangers’ lineup for more than just the rest of this season. Hamilton is still hardly able to rotate his body, much less swing a bat, and his recovery continues to stall.

The Dog Days of September In MLB

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: MLB,

Cliff LeeIf the playoffs were to begin tomorrow, the eight teams that will have earned the postseason berths would make for some interesting divisional series. The Dog Days of August seem to have carried over into September for baseball’s leaders as half of them seem to have hit a wall. Of all the playoff leaders, only the Minnesota Twins have a current winning streak of more than a single game. For the final three weeks of the season, teams are putting a lot of extra pressure on themselves right now.
