Rocket Richard race rides on

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL,

Sidney CrosbyThe goal-scoring race is at its peak. Sidney Crosby’s 49 goals has him in a slim one goal lead over two-time defending award winner Alex Ovechkin and Tampa’s young phenom Steven Stamkos. All three have two games left to play. Stamkos has scored almost a quarter of Tampa Bay’s goals and that lack of scoring help has lead Tampa to finish outside of the playoffs. Meanwhile, a spread out attack from the other two clubs has each preparing for the postseason, but it’s been these three individuals who have stolen the spotlight this season.

Penguins struggle to steal win from Leafs

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: NHL, Playoffs,

Crosby & MalkinIt took the defending Stanley Cup champions to bring the Leafs down. Toronto is playing way out of its league this month, having taken nine of their last 13 games, and they’ve been doing it competitively. Eight of their nine wins have come either in overtime or a shootout. The only other was a 6-4 win against last-place Edmonton. Sunday evening’s 5-4 shootout loss to Pittsburgh is the latest sign that while 2009-10 is a write-off for the lackluster Leafs, some minor offseason tweaks and improvements might bode well for Toronto, and poorly for the rest of the league.

Stamkos is just as good as the best

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL,

Steven StamkosSteven Stamkos is on a mission. That mission is to help the Tampa Bay Lightning get a playoff spot. If he happens to win the goal-scoring title along the way, great. Stamkos scored twice against Boston on Thursday night in a 5-3 Lightning win and tied himself with two of the greatest names in hockey, Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin, for first on the goal-scoring list. The three are competing for the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy, which is awarded to the top goal scorer in the NHL; an honor that Ovechkin has won for the last two seasons.

The history of the NHL: The Modern Era

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL,

Patrick RoyThe Modern Era of the NHL, beginning in 1992, has been nothing short of hectic. Gretzky became the all-time leading scorer, passing Gordie Howe, and NHL players competed at the Olympics for the first time ever in 1998, and the league ballooned yet again, increasing to 30 teams, with the Minnesota Wild and Columbus Blue Jackets joining for the 2000-01 season. Since then, the league has enjoyed one of its longest periods without relocation since the Original Six era.

How to win a sports debate

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, NBA, NFL, NHL,

Alex OvechkinThere are two kinds of sports debates, the rules of which are often determined by the setting. The first is the carefully thought out, statistically-backed argument that usually takes place between two or three people, set anywhere from a living room to a restaurant to the workplace. The second is the spontaneous rambling that can include as many as ten friends or as few as one confused sports fan. This kind takes place almost anywhere drinks and sports are available simultaneously. Which debate is better? Let’s find the answer by comparing Alex Ovechkin and Sydney Crosby.
