The Chicago Blackhawks have made their decision. Rookie-turned sophomore goaltender Antti Niemi will not return to Chicago and veteran Marty Turco will don the red and black jersey for the defending Stanley Cup champions in the upcoming 2010-11 season. The Hawks turned down Niemi’s $2.75 million salary that was awarded by an arbitrator. The Hawks tried to find a way to justify the money, but after an $826,875 rookie contract, it was too difficult to fit the dramatic price tag increase under the salary cap.

The season has yet to begin, but it already looks like the Chicago Blackhawks are mailing it in. Okay, maybe that is a little harsh, but since winning their first Stanley Cup since 1961 last month, the team has shipped a lot of key players out the door in order to make room under the salary cap. More than a half-dozen who drank from Lord Stanley’s mug have moved out of Chicago - willingly or unwillingly - and won’t be back for the 2010-11 season.

Hossa finally finds the holy grail

The third time was a charm for Marion Hossa, who, after three straight appearances in the Stanley Cup Final, finally got to hoist the shining silver mug. Hossa’s Penguins fell four games to two in the 2008 Finals. In the offseason, Hossa jumped ship to champion Detroit and hoped for a repeat, but his new Red Wing brethren came up one game (and one goal) short of this feat. They lost, of course, to Hossa former allies from Pittsburgh.

49-year drought just days away from ending

Chicago finally applied the strategy everybody knew would work: stop Chris Pronger, win the game. In that order. Pronger was an uncharacteristic minus-five in a 7-4 Chicago win in Game 5. The Blackhawks are now one victory away from ending their reign as the team with the longest streak without having won a Stanley Cup. 1961 feels a lot longer ago than 49 years for many fans in the Windy City, and they may only have wait as few as two more days to bring the Cup back home.

We know that the Chicago Blackhawks, after clinching the Central Division, have cruised through the first three rounds in the Western Conference while the Philadelphia Flyers, after squeezing a playoff berth away from the Rangers in a shootout victory, had a roller coaster ride through the East by making quick work of New Jersey, then becoming just the third team in history to come back from a 3-0 series deficit, then obliterating the weary Canadiens. But how do those two paths converge into something entertaining?

Vancouver lays an egg and Philadelphia survives to battle another game. Pittsburgh squeezes a win out of Montreal and San Jose ousts Detroit in five games. It’s just more of the same incredible stories in these NHL playoffs. Regardless of who has been playing on any given night, this playoff season has not been short on storylines. As the second round of the postseason winds down, it’s easy to forget that there’s still a full two series left to play.

The Vancouver Canucks hit a snag in the last two weeks, dropping three of their last four games, something they haven’t done since the beginning of February. Vancouver is still doing fine as far as playoff seeding goes, but the final few weeks of the season is hardly the time to go cold as ice. What’s worse for the Canucks is that when they lose, then tend to lose in regulation play. They have the lowest total of OTL points in the NHL with four.

Sharks, Blackhawks clinch playoff spots

The playoff picture became a little clearer on Thursday night as the top two seeds in the Western Conference clinched playoff spots. San Jose shut out Dallas 3-0 to both put them out of reach of ninth-place Calgary as well as leapfrog into first place over Chicago. Those same Blackhawks also clinched a berth, despite an 8-3 shellacking at the hands of Columbus. The Flames loss to the Islanders gave Chicago the edge in tie-breaking points.

It’s happened already. Less than a week after concerns about what would happen if a star NHL player were to be suspended for a dirty hit, Washington’s Alex Ovechkin – arguably the greatest player in the game, receives a major penalty and a game misconduct for hurling Chicago defenseman Brian Campbell into the boards in the first period of a Sunday afternoon game. Ovechkin now faces the possibility of supplemental discipline after further review of the incident by the league.

Have you ever wondered what might be the strangest game in NHL history? One argument might be made for a game between the Montreal Canadiens and the Chicago Blackhawks on the final day of the 1969-70 season. The Hawks needed a win to solidify first place. The Canadiens needed at least a tie to make the playoffs. The final playoff spot could come down to most goals scored, and the Canadiens head coach Claude Ruel considered starting the game with six skaters in lieu of a goalie to ensure a playoff spot. Shortly before the game he went with the more traditional idea to play for a win.
