Ilya KovalchukTalk about a leapfrog. The Atlanta Thrashers beat the Philadelphia Flyers 4-3 on Thursday night. The exciting part for Thrashers fans is that they took over 6th place in the Eastern Conference from the hometown Flyers, but the interesting part for hockey fans everywhere is that going in to the game, Atlanta was in 13th. Thanks to the NHL’s tiebreaker rules, the Thrashers earned two points with the win, and bypassed the Islanders, Bruins, Canadiens, Rangers, Panthers and Flyers in the standings.

Fenway ParkSo who’s watching Atlanta against Buffalo on Friday night? What was the National Hockey League thinking when they scheduled this game? The fact that the heavily-promoted Winter Classic between Philadelphia and Boston at Fenway Park takes place during the day not only completely overshadows the nightcap, but there is even going to be about three hours between the games. Just enough time to forget that Atlanta and Buffalo even exist once the new New Year’s tradition ends.

Atlanta Thrashers Set To Make NHL Playoffs Debut

For the first time in the Atlanta Thrashers’ seven-year history, they have made the NHL playoffs and will play the New York Rangers in round one. Atlanta Thrashers coach Bob Hartley thinks that the playoffs birth for the Thrashers will bring an air of excitement to Atlanta.

“I think we’re going to generate lots of energy in this great city with the playoffs, there are lots of faithful hockey fans who have waited a long time for this, and now we’re going to be able to thank them by giving them the NHL playoffs. That will create an extra buzz for this city and hopefully create new hockey fans.”
