The Doc, Roy Halladay, delivers fifth consecutive win

Roy HalladayThe doctor is in. Roy Halladay picked up his 15th win of the season on Saturday against the Mets and with that win he brought himself into the top five in all three National League Pitching Triple Crown categories. His 15 wins have him third behind Ubaldo Jimenez and Adam Wainwright’s 17; 2.24 ERA is also third, behind Tim Hudson’s 2.13 and Wainwright’s 1.99, and his 175 strikeouts place first among National Leaguers, 10 ahead of Felix Hernandez.

Halladay has now won each of his last five starts and has begun to show the kind of dominance he demonstrated pitching in baseball’s toughest division, the AL East. He has thrown 39 of a possible 45 innings, including one complete game. He has struck out 44 while only walking three, and has given up just seven earned runs, five of which came in one game. He has been nothing short of spectacular as the Phillies try to make yet another run for the postseason.

When the Phillies picked up Halladay, fans thought that if he could be half as good against in the NL as he was in the AL, he’d be a top contender for his second career Cy Young Award. A perfect game in May helped support that idea. Now only Wainwright and possibly Jimenez seem to be his only competition for the hardware, but ask him and he’ll be sure to tell you he doesn’t care about another Cy Young if his team doesn’t win the World Series.

The Phillies are now just two games behind the Braves for the divisional lead, but have had a difficult time catching up as both teams are 7-3 in their last 10. San Francisco, who holds the wild card spot is another story. With a 5-5 record in their last 10, the Phillies have climbed to within a game and after an off-day on Monday, will welcome the Giants into town for a three-game set. Luckily they’ll miss Halladay, but with how well the Phillies have played as of late, it wouldn’t be surprising to see them overtake San Fran in the standings. And you can bet Halladay will be ready to go back to work against lowly Washington by the weekend.
