  • Drakino, You are correct and I may have written the article in a misleading way. I don't think all DRM is bad, just that it can and most often is used incorrectly. I really don't have that big of a problem with Apple restricting their operating system to their hardware with DRM, I just fear the slippery slope that could follow. Once TCPA is common on many operating systems and over several versions it's easy to "tighten your grasp" or be forced to by content providers because the capability is there. I'm not saying I won't buy a Intel based Mac with TCPA in it - I'm just saying that I've very wary of what this bodes for the future, and if it does get bad I'll have to look to other solutionms.

  • Junktruck - Have no fears - we wouldn't dream of running the website on Windows. Linux is the platform of choice for Gear Live. And you would be surprised at how similar OSX and Linux really are under the hood - Darwin rocks!

  • Bravo Jon for a well thought out commment. I do agree that the market for the video iPod is ripe for the picking given the alternatives out there. The one thing I differ from you on however is how they will enter it. Right now there are a few solutions out there to get short clips - even cell phones with EVDO can stream that kind of thing - what the market needs is a sudden influx of DVD or better quality video in a portable format. Yes the player will be expensive and have to have massive amounts of storage and energy, but think of the power if consumers suddenly can browse 1000's of movies, pay $5-10 to buy one, and then watch it on the train, at a friends house (via a dongle to their TV), or anywhere they please. Whatever company can offer this Digital Media Trinity first will certainly be in the position Apple is now with the iTunes music store - but for the entire multimedia marketplace.

  • As a member of the Gear Live team I also was shocked to see Andru's comment today on Gear Live. I have a tremendous amount of respect for Engadget as leading technology website know that the entire team here does as well. I am glad he has had a chance to publicly try to set the record straight. May I offer my personal apologies to Peter and the entire Engadget team I hope that they can forgive a misunderstood and poorly worded statement.

  • Unfortuantly the 8.01 release sucks. I had been using the 8 beta for a while and was really happy with it, but when I installed the launch version I've been having random crashes. It's isolated to poorly coded websites, but it's strange that the beta had no problem yet they introduced bugs in the release version! I downgraded and will stick with the beta until they fix the problems!
