VholdR Joins Mini-Cam Ranks

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Cameras, Internet,

VholdR

This year is teeming with mini-cameras and the VholdR has become part of the line that is made for those on the go that want their exploits seen online. The cam is only 3.7-inches and weighs merely 4.8 oz. Shooting 640 x 480 footage at 30 fps, it utilizes a microSD card for storage. Its lens has a twin laser alignment and can rotate, and the unit itself is waterproof and shockproof. The VholdR will be up for grabs sometime during the holiday season for $349.99, although the company is encouraging pre-order with a deposit of $50.00. Online retailer Twenty20 Cameras claims that there will be only a limited supply, but we figure that there are plenty of other mini-cams to choose from that we can actually touch before buying.

Daily Show Video Archive Online

Jon Stewart Daily Show fans, rejoice! Since fans couldn’t get their fill of The Daily Show on YouTube, they can now visit a site dedicated to the show, called (aptly enough) DailyShow.com. And, while the site excludes the earliest years when Craig Kilborn played host, you can visit and see every tasty bit of the show during Jon Stewart’s reign. The site just went live today, and I’ve already checked it out and, dare I say, I feel all warm and fuzzy inside. You’ve got to see it and relive the glory days of Colbert, Stewart and Carell. Good times, with more than 16,000 video clips to choose from the past nine years. Yep, I could probably spend a good chunk of my free time over there reminiscing about the good times. And for fans of “Craigers” (Kilborn, that is), it’s expected that those clips may be up in 2008. I think Jon Stewart is the bomb, but it would be fun to see those old Kilborn episodes too. And, if you missed the previous night’s episode, the home page will feature clips there so you can stay up to date on all your Daily Show news. A helpful timeline of clips, plus search tools and tags by celebrity or correspondent should make searching for your favorite clips a bit easier.

YouTube Unveils Copyright Protection Plan

YouTube CopyrightYouTube has finally released the means to automatically remove copyrighted clips. Although it has been eliminating most of those videos per request, the site is hoping that this will have a more positive impact on complaints such as Viacom’s suit against them. Working with its parent Google, the technology also allows companies to sell ads on their material if they will allow them to remain on YouTube. Unfortunately, the method of copyright protection requires copies of the videos that need protecting to be given to YouTube for comparison. This certainly doesn’t appear to be the solution that the studios desire and we suspect that YouTube will have to go back to the drawing board on this one.

Watch Britney Spears’ New Video for ‘Gimme More’

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Music, MTV,

It for some reason you don’t see the YouTube video, you can find a very short preview of it here.

new video for ‘Gimme More’ is not officially scheduled to debut until Monday—but here’s your chance to get it out of the way now.

After you finish watching the clip, ask yourself these questions:

  • Was the sense of nausea you felt a result of the shaky editing or something else?
  • Did her hair remind you of Demi Moore, Cher or Morticia Addams?
  • Is it even possible to dance with shorts lodged so far up your rear?
  • Did you find yourself laughing more than voyeur Britney did in the video?
  • Was there even a point to the whole thing?

If you feel compelled to watch the video again on a much larger screen, set your Tivo to Monday’s on .

LUG To Hold Auction With Nerds

LUG

The University of Washington LUG (Linux User Group) was told that they needed more females among their ranks to attract them into the WSU’s computer science programs. The nerds came up with a plan to auction themselves off. They suggested that the delegated male students can fix the females’ computers, help with homework, or act as dinner partners.

LUG President Ben Ford says that he and a selected sorority sister will host the event, which he hopes will become a YouTube extravaganza. Unfortunately, although the club has contacted many of the sororities on campus, there have been no takers thusfar. We suspect that any female who is using Linux is already intelligent enough to fix her own computer and can do her homework by herself, thank you very much.

Britney Spears YouTube Fan Signed to TV Deal

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Reality, Gossip, Internet,

TVWhen reality competition shows first hit the scene, viewers delighted at the possibility that anyone, at any time, could potentially become a star. The girl next door. That guy you dated five years ago. Your friendly neighborhood cop. Reality TV is what paved the way for technical adaptations like YouTube…and now, are the next reality stars going to come from it? The 19-year-old fan whose tearful, over-dramatic YouTube video that became a media sensation has just signed his own TV deal. Yes, in all seriousness. Chris Crocker’s “Leave Britney Alone” message scored almost eight million hits, and now viewers will be treated to the “Chris Crocker Experience” on TV, which will no doubt be Britney-soaked.

Watch YouTube For College Credit

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Internet, Misc. Tech, Videos,

YouTube ClassPitzer College has begun to offer college credit for students that watch YouTube. Approximately 35 students attend the class where they watch videos and make comments about them. They are also encouraged to submit their own work. Professor Alexandra Juhasz, who set up the “Learning From YouTube” course, believes that one can learn about the “corporate-sponsored democratic media expression.” This sounds to us like one of those excuses not to have to issue and/or do real homework on the part of both the instructor and students, and suspect it will soon have the popularity of such classes as basket weaving and Dummy Math 101.

Prince Seeks to Protect Artistic Content on the Net

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Internet, Music,

PrincePrince has asked YouTube to remove unauthorized clips of his recent concert in London. There have been more than 1,000 of them eliminated in the past week by Web Sheriff, a company he hired to do the dirty work. He is also trying to stop unauthorized filesharing and items sold on eBay without his permission. Managing director of the company John Giacobbi said, “Prince feels very strongly that people should remember his concerts as they were, not as some grainy mobile phone footage.”

Considering all the freebies he gave away to UKers, we think this is a decent request on his part. We have been to several concerts of late where security will no longer allow cameras to be taken inside and suspect it is a sign of more restrictions to come.

Unboxing Flip Video

It’s no top of the line model, but we still dig our new Flipvideo. Going through video withdrawal, we purchased one on a whim and set out to test our new toy. It is so simple to operate that we are eternally grateful to puredigital. The MSRP for the cam is $149.99, but we managed to purchase one on Amazon for $130.00 with free shipping. We figure we had better invest the savings into rechargeable batteries as this puppy only comes with 2 standard AA’s. Details to follow.
