Notorious Party Goes Out of Control

A Brooklyn after party put three revelers in the hospital recently when the celebration got a little too violent. The party, touted as the “official” after event to celebrate the movie Notorious (a biopic on rapper Notorious B.I.G.), took place at the Djumbala club.
One victim, 21, was stabbed multiple times and was classified as being in critical condition upon arrival to the hospital. Three others who suffered stab wounds were said to be stable. It is not currently known who did the stabbing, whether the police have anyone in custody or how the party deteriorated into violence in the first place.

Son Shoots Parents When They Deny Him Halo

To teen Daniel Petric, Halo 3 is more than just a game. He became so angry at not being able to play it that he shot his father and killed his mother with his dad’s gun. Apparently, his parents didn’t want him to buy the game and caught him with it when he tried to sneak it into the house. Father Mark then put it in a lockbox in his closet that housed a 9mm handgun until his son retrieved both. Daniel’s lawyers claim their client has been under stress because after an accident and staph infection, he had been homebound for a year with nothing to do but watch TV and play video games. Daniel and Mark, can you say books?

40-Year-Old Virgin Actor Accused of Stabbing Girlfriend

UPDATE: During Wednesday’s arraignment, the judge raised Malil’s bail to $10 million.
Shelley Malil, an actor who appeared in The 40-Year-Old Virgin, was arrested yesterday after allegedly stabbing his ex this weekend.
Malil was picked up after late Monday after departing a train in Oceanside, CA. He was preparing to meet with his lawyer at the request of his family.
According to the San Diego Sheriffs Office, police responded to a home in the San Marcos area after callers reported hearing screams for help. When officers arrived, they found a woman who had been stabbed up to 20 times. The victim was transported to Palomar Hospital where she was last listed in critical condition.
A local television station reports that the attack happened after Shelley found the woman talking in her backyard with another man. (That person was also stabbed in the hand while trying to help.) Two children were in the home during the incident.

The Torture Game 2

Fans of horror movies can get their violent stress relief with The Torture Game 2. It’s a bit disconcerting that anyone can take the simplistic animated body and use a chainsaw, spikes, razor blades, rope, shotgun, or other techniques to disable her/his victim. The chainsaw makes appropriate sound effects. If you feel the game is too much gore, don’t let the kids take a whack at it either. We suspect that the next game will feature water boarding.

Manhunt 2 Review: The Good, The Bad and The Grisly

Along with the release of “Halo 3” and the unfortunate postponement of “GTA IV”, one of the biggest video game stories of the year is the saga of Rockstar’s “Manhunt 2”. First, it was banned in England due to its graphic violence. Then it was given the kiss-of-death “Adults Only” rating here in the US by the ESRB. Sony and Nintendo do not release games with that rating—and they’re not carried by Blockbuster and Walmart. Undaunted, Rockstar made some revisions, and eventually the game received a “Mature” rating.
So now “Manhunt 2” is available in stores for Nintendo Wii, Playstation 2 and PSP. Having followed the saga, and very curious about the game’s content (plus I’m a huge fan of previous Rockstar games), I made it my business to rent the Wii version and play it. Having never played the original “Manhunt”—and not being a fan of stealth games—I had little idea what to expect. After completing the tutorial of Wiimote and Nunchuk moves (which includes some very funny, if grisly, sound effects), I dove in.

UPDATE: ‘The Kite Runner’ Delayed Due to Controversial Scene

As reported earlier, controversy surrounding a violent scene threatened the big-screen premiere of The Kite Runner. The adaptation of the popular Khaled Hosseini novel will now be delayed six weeks.
The family of the young Afghan actor raped in the film wanted the segment removed because it would be considered culturally offensive. They feared they would become victims of retaliation in their own country once the movie premiered. The family claims 12-year-old Ahmad Khan Mahmidzada would never have participated in the production had they been given a script and/or advance warning of the scene.
Although director Marc Forster (Monster’s Ball, Finding Neverland) and the producers all insist Ahmad’s father was briefed on the situation, they have expressed concern for those involved. In hopes of retaining the crucial scene—and because of increased violence in Kabul—Paramount Vantage is finalizing plans to temporarily move Ahmad and two other actors out of the country. The movie, originally slated for a Nov. 2nd release, will now be released on Dec. 14th…. several days after the boys finish school. It’s believed they may return sometime in March—after their summer vacation ends and the movie dust clears. This decision appears to be something Ahmad’s father is comfortable with.
The movie’s new premiere date will now pit it against another highly-anticipated film, Will Smith’s I Am Legend.

Will Rape Scene in ‘The Kite Runner’ Be Removed?

A best-selling novel’s film adaptation is now facing trouble only one month away from its theatrical release. The Kite Runner, written by Khaled Hosseini (A Thousand Splendid Suns), tells the story of two friends who grew up together in Afghanistan. In one important scene, Amir, does nothing to help his friend, Hassan, who is being raped.
Unfortunately, the family of the young boy who filmed this crucial plot point wants those frames left on the cutting room floor. Rape is considered completely undignified and against Afghan culture. If the movie is seen in their country, they worry they’ll be ostracized or harassed for making Afghans look poorly. They don’t think people will be able to separate fact from fiction. According to 12-year-old Ahmad Khan Mahmidzada, the actor who was paid $10,000 for the role, he was never given a script and would not have accepted the job had he known about the violent scene. (Why he chose to shoot the scene anyway is not made clear. The family admits they did find out about the rape several days before it was filmed.)
Kite’s producers, Bennett Walsh and Rebecca Yeldham, claim they’ve spoken to the family since the scene was filmed last year. According to Walsh and Yeldham, they were given the greenlight provided the content was portrayed in a sensitive manner. Conversely, Ahmad’s father asserts the producers told him the scene would be cut when they were confronted about it. He also says the company has promised to ‘take care of the family’ if they became victims of any backlash.
At this point, the producers have not said whether the scene will stand. Meanwhile, the Marc Forster film is scheduled for release on Nov. 2nd.

How Manhunt 2 Toned Down to an M Rating

Some questions were asked after Rockstar announced that it had adjusted the content of its violent horror title Manhunt 2 to warrant an M rating from the ESRB rather than the unsellable AO it had previously been given. California Senator Leland Yee was one person asking such questions.
Since much of the public’s information about the original content in Manhunt 2 came from IGN’s Matt Casamassina’s hands-on with the game prior to rating, it’s only fitting that he plays the modified version heading to retail and reports on what the differences are.
Primarily, Casamassina says, the game has taken the controversial murder animations and added some blur and darkening effects to obfuscate the actions, making the action less identifyable. Casamassina is disappointed with the changes:
[It’s] unfortunate because both everything else is unchanged and because these death strikes are what gamers will want to work toward; they’re the pay off for a job well done, but now the pay off is not nearly as rewarding.
It’s worth noting that one maneuver in which the player removes an enemy’s testicles with a pair of pliers has been completely excised from the game, but aside from these adjustments the game is still extremely dark and graphically violent according to Casamassina’s estimation.
California Senator Questions the ESRB’s Decision on Manhunt 2

After finally agreeing to grant the embattled Rockstar title Manhunt 2 a retail-friendly Mature rating, the ESRB is drawing some fire from California senator Leland Yee. Yee, best known for his failed 2005 video game legislation, is questioning what changed to entice the ESRB’s about-face. In a statement he says, “The ESRB refuses to use the AO rating for violence despite the descriptor calling for such a rating when there are ‘graphic depictions of violence.’ If Manhunt doesn’t qualify, what would?”
Somewhat surprisingly, Yee does have a valid question. It does seem like game publishers ought not to be under the typical pre-release scrutiny for something as inconsequential as ratings determination, but is there any reason why the ESRB can’t be forthcoming with specifics about how and why it comes to its conclusions?

CBS’ Smith: Lacking the Ummph for High-Stakes Drama

I was undecided about whether I wanted to tune into the new drama on CBS called Smith starring Ray Liotta and a noteworthy ensemble cast, but made the decision to give it a chance largely due to my female insensibility; basing my decision merely on the fact that the cast included one Simon Baker, the hunky Aussie that I had just “fell in love” with (if I were not already married to my wonderful husband), while watching a silly romantic comedy a few weeks back entitled Something New . Of course that is not what I told my husband. I just asked if he wanted to watch with me, in which case he did since he enjoyed Ray Liotta’s performance in Goodfellas.
