The score may have been close for most of Super Bowl XLIV, but the game’s ratings were the best thing on TV…by far.
Last night’s battle between the Indianapolis Colts at the New Orleans Saints had 106.48 million Bud Light-swilling, Doritos-chomping sports fans glued to their TV sets. That number represents the largest viewing audience for any event in U.S. television history.
The previous record was established by the series finale of M*A*S*H. That 1983 event totaled a whopping 105.97 viewers.

Lost’s 3-hour kickoff might not have done enough to beat the activity over at FOX, but it did do well enough to beat itself. Yesterday’s event showed year-to-year premiere improvement for the first time since Season 2. The series also had its best rating in almost two years.

Jeff Probst had to learn a very hard lesson last night: Fans simply don’t like to watch him in shows that aren’t titled Survivor. The gridiron action between the New Orleans Saints and the Minnesota Vikings was just about the only thing people were dialing in to watch last night. (Repeats offered by the competitors helped paved the way.)
