Bleeding Edge TV 175: Activating the Apple iPhone

This episode was sponsored by Geek Squad’s Idea Festival. Submit your ideas for using technology to save the planet at ideafest.geeksquad.com.

One unique aspect of the is that you, as the buyer, get to activate it yourself using , rather than having the phone activated in-store. We figured we would activate the phone on camera to show how seamless (or non-seamless, depending on how you look at it) the iPhone activation experience is. Watch the video, and let us know what you think.

i-Caught Takes YouTube to Prime Time

i-Caught

i-Caught is another example of how the Internet is influencing the “real” world. Beginning August 7, ABC is launching a newsmag for YouTubers which will feature breaking news stories and investigations, political issues, celeb sightings, and Internet hoaxes. With anchor Bill Weir, the program plans on taking original videos and some from other viral sites.

“The watershed event that changed newsgathering was the London terror attack in 2005,” said Executive Producer David Sloan. “There were people on that subway who did not know if they would live or die, but they got out their cell phones and started shooting.”

The network is looking for the juciest of clips such as Hoff’s drunken hamburger feed and Michael Richard’s tirade at The Comedy Club. We suggest before they begin airing the show that you go out with your video cam and start looking for your 15 minutes of fame since ABC is still taking submissions.

Bleeding Edge TV 174: DARPA Grand Challenge Qualifier: Carnegie Mellon and GM’s BOSS Vehicle

We visited one of the fifty or so groups participating in the DARPA Urban Challenge during one of their qualifying rounds. In case you are unaware, the DARPA Urban Challenge is a charge given publicly to groups who are capable of designing and proving the technology for autonomously driven vehicles. Carnegie Mellon University teamed up with GM to create an autonomous SUV they call “Boss.” In order to participate in November’s 60-mile urban driverless race, they need to pass this benchmark. Check out the video to see Boss pull perfect three point turns and beautifully follow traffic rules - even at four way stops with other cars. We’re crazy excited to see this technology come alive in our society. The team from DARPA is darting back and forth across our country qualifying and disqualifying entries. Some of the remaining companies and teams will bring us autonomously driven cars during our lifetime, its amazing how close we already are.

New iPhone Commercial: YouTube

Apple has revealed that is the twelfth application on the . We have all wondered out loud about the lack of balance shown on the iPhone’s Home screen, what with two rows of four icons, and a third row with only three. Then one of the iPhone commercials gave a peek that there would be twelve, but we just couldn’t see what it was. Now we know. In conjunction with releasing YouTube on Apple TV, the company made it know that a customized YouTube viewer application would ship on the iPhone as well. We must say, we were underwhelmed at first, since the iPhone has Safari and should thusly be able to view YouTube anyway - but when we saw the video of YouTube in action on the device, it looked very slick. Just one more thing to look forward to come June 29.

Video: iPhone Launches June 29, Get In Line Now

As evidenced by the video above, found on YouTube by one of our readers, the now has an official launch date: June 29, 2007. The commercial first aired this evening during an episode of 60 Minutes. The announcement of the release date was subtle, and was featured at the end of the spot, which showcase a few of the iPhone’s functions. We were expecting Steve Jobs to announce the launch date at WWDC, but what do we know? All that matters now is that the biggest mobile phone launch in history is just a few weeks away.

UPDATE: Apple just posted three new iPhone commercials, all featuring the June 29 launch date.
