Review: MSN i-Buddy

The MSN i-Buddy is an emotional wreck. Connect him to your USB port, then get in touch with someone on MSN Messenger. When that person comes online, your mini-bud goes to work and lets you know. Every time your friend sends you an emoticon, he responds by colors, flapping wings, body movement, and a thumping “heart.” Get two and you have a veritable emoticon party.

We had a lot of fun playing with the gadget and our cat seemed to think he was there just for her. Note that the most response we got was when we were sent an angry emoticon. We thought the thing would fall off our desktop! You can find the i-Buddy at Firebox for $24.95. While they are temporarily out, you can pre-order to receive one from the next batch.

(Thanks, Jen and Kent, and Avril!)

Gais Faltima Plays, Records

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Misc. Tech, Music, USB,

Faltima 010

The Gais Faltima Series 010 may have an odd name but can do a lot. It plays music and data CDs, MP3s and WMA by USB, MP3 and WMA files by SD card and analog 33, 45 and 78 records. It also features an AM/FM tuner, front controls and number display. But the best part is that while the tunes are playing, the device will record them to another media form. At a price of $499.99, this one is so far only available in Japan, but we it expect will find its way elsewhere by the next holiday season.

Pregnancy Kit Gets USB Treatment

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Accessories, USB, Misc. Tech, Science,

USB Pregnancy Test KitIs there nothing that cannot be adapted for USB? Apparently not, once we found this gadget. The p-Teq USB Pregnancy Test Kit works similarly to others with an absorbent test strip. You then connect the other end to your USB 2.0 port and the gadget does its thing. It also can tell by cycle if this is the time to try for that baby. After you finish the test, remove the device and dispose of the strip. And yes, it comes with 20 strips so it is reusable. Just be careful when testing to remember which end is which. The Test Kit is said to be 99% accurate and is available for $18.00 in the pickle aisle at ThinkGeek.

(By the way, who thinks April Fool’s jokes are only fun on the 1st?)

This one is great for the Rubik’s cube fan or for those who want to add a little color to their otherwise drab computer space. The Rotatable Hub is plug and play with USB 2.0, features low power usage, and supports Windows 98/98SE/ME/2000/XP or Mac OS 8.6 or above. At a size of 60 x 60 x 30mm and a weight of 45g, it comes with its own USB cable and a very kind price of only $12.00.
