Ask Andru: How do I prepare my Mac for Mountain Lion?
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Features, PC / Laptop, Software,
Apple is set to release it's next major operating system update, known os OS X Mountain Lion, later this month. In this edition of Ask Andru, Tracy writes in and asks if there is anything she should do to prepare her Mac computers for the Mountain Lion installation. I share some tips on what we can all do to ensure a smooth upgrade experience to Mac OS 10.8.
Question: I hear that Apple will be releasing a new version of OS X shortly. Is there anything I need to do in order to prepare for it to ensure that I can run it? Will it be expensive?
You're correct! Apple announced OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion just five months ago, and it will be available in under two weeks. Mountain Lion will sell exclusively on the Mac App Store for $19.99 (so, not expensive at all!) and will include some nice features, including AirPlay Mirroring from your Mac, tighter iCloud integration, Twitter and Facebook built-in at the system level, Reminders, Notes, Game Center, a new Messages app that will let you send and receive iMessages from the Mac, iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. In total, there are over 200 new features that Apple is introducing in Mountain Lion.

VLC 1.0 now available after 8.5 year wait!
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: PC / Laptop, Software,
You may not know this, but the underground Swiss Army knife of video playing software known as VLC, a project that started 8 and a half years ago, has finally hit version 1.0. Along the new version comes plenty of new features, including high definition codecs, AirTunes streaming, support for Blu-Ray linear PCM, and plenty of bug fixes. If you play video on your computer, you’ll definitely want to give this one a download to try it out.
VLC 1.0 is completely free and is available for download on Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems.

15-inch MacBook Pro specs updated
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, PC / Laptop,
A lot is going on this morning over in Apple land, and with all the new hardware released, we almost missed the fact that the 15-inch unibody MacBook Pro line has received a spec bump. Nothing too fancy, but now if you want to get a processor faster than the 2.4GHz default, you get a 2.66GHz chip, as opposed to the 2.53GHz chip offerred previously. If you really wanna pimp this thing out, there is even a 2.93GHz option now. Be careful with that one though. Male or female, if you want to have children, keep it off your lap, because that’s gotta hurt.
Apple updates $999 white MacBook to match unibody version, almost

We always enjoy being pleasantly surprised by Apple, and it appears that today they’ve quietly updated their low-end Macbook so that it’s more in line with what you’d get from the aluminum unibody version. It still runs for $999, which is a great price for a brand new Apple portable, but now you get the newer 2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo processor with 1066 MHz front side bus, 2 GB DDR2 RAM, Bluetooth 2.1, and the integrated NVIDIA GeForce 9400M chipset that is all the rage. Now, granted, the RAM is slower than what you’d find in the more expensive unibody Macbook, and you also don’t get those wonderful aluminum bragging rights, but you do get a FireWire port—and when it’s all said and done, isn’t that what it’s all about?
If you missed our unibody Macbook and Macbook Pro comparison video, you can check it out after the break.

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Gizmatic, Short Bytes, Apple, Features, Mods / Hacks, PC / Laptop, Podcasts, Storage, Videocasts,
A quick and simple way to set up fast Time Machine backups on your Mac Pro, or more storage for all those Bleeding Edge episodes you’ve been downloading, is to add in more hard drives. Thankfully, Apple has made the upgrade path to accomplishing this super simple. In this episode, we show you the step-by-step process that is takes to install a new hard drive in your Mac Pro in under 5 minutes. All you need is a Mac Pro, a Philips screwdriver, and a SATA hard drive. Oh, and of course a few minutes of spare time. It really is that easy. Hit up the video for the proof, and let us know what you think.
A big thank you goes out to HP for sponsoring this episode.
Pixelmator updates to 1.2, adds bunch of features
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Software,
Here at Gear Live, we are big fans of Pixelmator. In case you haven’t heard of it, Pixelmator is an image editor for OS X that takes advantage of a bunch of different OS X features in a way that few apps do. We love it because, while not as powerful os Photoshop, it has just about every feature the average person needs in their image editing/manipulation app, at a price that is far, far easier to swallow at just $59. Oh, and it does support PSD files, and is the world’s first image editor powered by your graphics card. Anyway, they’re calling this one “Pixelmator 1.2 Draftsman,” and there are a bunch of new features that we look forward to getting our hands on. We’ve got the full release notes for you after the jump.

Rumor: New $479 Xbox 360 SKU features 120GB HD, HDMI
Posted by Michael Cardiff Categories: Corporate News, Release Dates, Rumors, Xbox 360,
The big news this morning comes to us courtesy of GameInformer magazine and a scan-happy reader, who points to a new article detailing the upgraded Xbox 360 that’s been rumored for so long. The major details so far? The new 360 will come in black (which our very own gearlive scooped right here), and it will feature built-in HDMI outputs, an HDMI cable (zing!), and an upgraded 120GB harddrive for holding all that new IPTV content. The system’s rumored to break in “late April”.
The $479 price tag is obviously meant to take another cheap shot at Sony, as MS’s most expensive SKU will still be cheaper than Sony’s cheapest PS3. Still, with all these upgrades to the console built in, it’s a wonder they forgot to include WiFi compatibility out of the box… no love for those of us with our routers in other rooms?!?
And for all of you wondering whether this is an April fool’s joke, the story appears to have been vetted by Kotaku:
Matt Helgeson, senior editor over at Game Informer, just dropped us a line to let us know that the story is in fact true. As a rule they don’t post fake news stories in their April mag. So go celebrate.
There you have it! See the scans after the jump.

Major Gear Live Discussion Forums Upgrade: Feature List
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Announcements,
Alright, so in the continuing effort to make our discussion forums even better, we have just unleashed a bunch of new upgrades:
- Added an ignore member feature.
- Added the ability for users to report posts to moderators.
- Added ability to search by member group in Advanced Search Form
- Refined nomenclature for topics, replies, and posts (which is now consistently used as the sum of the topics and replies).
- Fixed a bug where posting a new reply would return you to the topic’s first page instead of the last page.
- Fixed a bug where an image attachment thumbnail would mistakenly increase the dimensions of the image.
- Fixed a bug where deleting a user’s topics when banning them would cause other users’ posts to the affected topics to be orphaned.
- Fixed a bug where merging two topics would result in the topic being set by the newer thread instead of the older one.
- Fixed a bug where attachments were not being connected properly on merge or split.
- Fixed a bug where a Topic’s edit date would change when any action was taken on the thread instead of only when the title or body was edited
- Fixed a bug that would allow posting and editing of posts in Read Only forums.
Those are the main ones, but there are a bunch more improvements “under the hood” so to speak. Give things a test and let us know if you find anything odd!
