Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: 20th Century Fox, Disney, Universal, Action, Adaptation, Animation, Sequels, Comedy, Box Office, New Releases,
Fast Five has managed to trump all the animated comedies and big-budget productions of the year, earning $86.2 million in its opening weekend, the biggest box office debut in 2011 (so far).
The sequel drove Rio down to second place (it earned $14.7 million over the weekend). Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Big Happy Family earned $9.8 million in third place, and Water For Elephants nailed down fourth with $9.3 million. Disney’s lighthearted Prom had a rather dismal opening, debuting in fifth place with a $4.7 million take.

Rio is number one for the second week in a row. The animated family film earned $26.8 million at the box office over the weekend, barely edging out Tyler Perry’s sequel.
Madea’s Big Happy Family earned $25.8, just missing the number one mark set by Rio. Water for Elephants, driven by the much-touted on-screen pairing of Reese Witherspoon and Twilight star Robert Pattinson, debuted at third place with $17.5 million.
Hop continues to hang around in the top 5, earning $12.5 million to secure fourth place. Scream 4 fell to fifth, taking only $7.2 over the weekend.

Box Office: Russell Brand Stays on Top

UPDATE: Final numbers prove Sunday estimates were wrong. Get the updated -- and accurate -- box office results below.
Even Oscar-winning actress Natalie Portman can’t compete with family-friendly Easter-themed animation. Hop has retained its number one box office position, and Portman’s lowbrow comedy flick suffered a dismal opening weekend.
Hop, which cost around $63 million to make, has already earned a cool $68.2 million from box office revenue ($21.7 million this weekend). Thanks to his new comedy flick, Russell Brand is in the top two positions on the box office list for the weekend. Arthur earned $12.6 million to gain the second top slot. His voice is behind the leading bunny in Hop, and Brand plays the title character in the number 2 flick.
Action flick Hanna just barely got pushed into third, earning $12.3 million in its opening weekend. Soul Surfer scored $11.1 million to lock down a fourth place opening. Insidious is still on the top five list (barely) with $9.7 million. Natalie Portman, James Franco and Danny McBride proved to be a dismal box office combination, earning a combined $9.5 with Your Highness to land in sixth place.
UPDATED: Hanna actually earned second place at the box office with $12.4 million. Arthur slid into third place with its $12.2 million box office take.

Snow White Found! Phil Collins Daughter Set to Star

Lily Collins, daughter of music icon Phil Collins, is Snow White. She’s been cast for the title role in The Brothers Grimm: Snow White.
She’ll co-star with Julia Roberts as the Evil Queen and Armie Hammer (The Social Network) as Prince Andrew. Collins is still a fresh face in the movie industry, but she’s no slouch. She worked alongside Sandra Bullock in The Blind Side, and she’s currently working on the set of a new remake of Romeo and Juliet.
The Relativity film will compete with a Universal flick that’s using the exact same subject matter. The Snow White and the Huntsman cast is already set with Kristen Stewart as Snow White and Charlize Theron as the Evil Queen.

Another American Pie Movie in the Oven
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Universal, Sequels, Comedy, Casting, Scripts, Upcoming Releases,
But maybe this time, it’ll have more plot than Naked Mile. The American Pie franchise is still chugging along, but hopefully the next sequel won’t follow the ill-fated Beta House route.
The aptly-named American Reunion plans to reunite the cast from the very first (and incredibly successful) American Pie movie. Jason Biggs, Eugene Levy and Sean William Scott are all on board with the project (though, considering Scott’s recent move to rehab his fate is now up in the air). Tara Reid, Chris Klein, Thomas Ian Nicholas, Mena Suvari, Alyson Hannigan and Jennifer Coolidge are all in talks with Universal about their proposed participation in the film.
Filming is slated to begin in May.

Kristen Stewart to Play Snow White
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Universal, Adaptation, Remakes, Casting, Upcoming Releases,
Storybooks and Kristen Stewart are a perfect match. The dark-haired beauty is filming her last Twilight film even as we pine away for the release of Breaking Dawn, Part I, but the end of Bella is just the beginning for K-Stew. The actress has signed on to play Snow White, another raven-locked storybook heroine.
Stewart will play one of the titular roles in Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman, one of two Snow White movies currently in the works.
Producer Palak Patel is hoping to set a new tone for the old fairy tale with the casting decision. She explained it all on Twitter: “Clearly, [Kristen Stewart] isn’t right for the upbeat, song-happy Disney version of the character, but this movie is going to be dark and gritty.”
Then, it sounds like K-Stew really is the perfect choice. Stay up-to-date on this and other movie news when you follow FilmCrunch on Twitter.

The Rite may not currently be up for an Oscar, but it does have an Oscar winner – and a box office win.
Anthony Hopkins’ first wide release since The Wolfman cut No Strings Attached from its top spot this past weekend. The film, which debuted during (another) East Coast weather event, managed to shovel up $14.8 million in ticket sales.
The Mechanic, featuring action star Jason Statham, also found a place in the Top Ten. The film – a remake of a Charles Bronson movie – opened in third place with $11.4 million.

Pair Natalie Portman with a star from That 70’s Show and what do you get? A Top Ten film.
No Strings Attached – last weekend’s only new wide release – topped the box office with a $19.6 million bow. The film, which features Portman and Ashton Kutcher, gave Natalie – someone who has avoided romantic comedies -- her best debut since 2006’s V for Vendetta.
As for Black Swan, Portman’s film with 70’s Show actress Mila Kunis – that film slipped one notch down to sixth place over the weekend. You can expect a possible boost for the thriller after Oscar nominations are announced Tuesday morning.

Box Office Breakdown: No Dilemma for The Green Hornet

The Green Hornet, starring Seth Rogen and Jay Chou, brought in a lot green for Sony this weekend. Although the film came nowhere near its $110 million budget, Hornet did earn enough ($33.5 million) to make it the second-best grosser ever during the MLK Jr. holiday frame. (Cloverfield earned $40.1 million over its first three days in 2008.)
Despite the combined comedic forces of Vince Vaughn and Kevin James, The Dilemma turned out to be more of a non-issue. The Universal entry -- which cost $70 million to produce -- failed to even crack the $20 million mark. That's the worst debut for Vaughn since 2007's Fred Claus and the worst open for James ever (if you don't count the films he only voiced).
