Google and Twitter add tweet by phone for Egypt
Posted by Patrick Lambert Categories: Internet

In light of the severe Internet disruptions that are happening in Egypt, where the government cut off all Internet access and SMS messages in and out of the country in an attempt to silence the 80 million people living there, we've seen a number of technologies come up to break the blockade. People have been using ham radios, satellite phones, and fax machines to make their voices heard. Now, Google and Twitter have partnered up over the weekend to create a phone-to-tweet service, where people from Egypt can make calls to an international number, and their messages will be tweeted automatically. Yet another example that proves you can't silence an entire people, and the communication always finds a way. Very cool.

As part of their CES presentation, Pioneer, a company used to making audio and electronic equipment for cars, announced their plans to integrate Twitter, Facebook and Pandora deeper into their devices. This will lead to your dashboard being connected directly to your social feeds. Pioneer says that it believes smartphones don't do the job because of their small screens, plus the fact that they require a driver's full attention. The new devices from Pioneer will read tweets and status updates directly to the user. The company will bring 9 different models in 2011 starting at $150.

Gmail founder predicts Chrome OS is doomed
Posted by Patrick Lambert Categories: Google, Software

Last night Paul Buchheit, the former Google employee who created Gmail, tweeted his rather bold prediction that Chome OS was doomed:
"Prediction: ChromeOS will be killed next year (or "merged" with Android)"
He then added on the FriendFeed thread that Chrome OS has "no purpose that isn't better served by Android" and asking "is this too obvious to even state?" As Google started to ship CR-48 preview devices, with tech blogs reviewing them endlessly, people found themselves in front of a new type of system, one that provides much less than Android, or any other OS has provided before. Google is hoping that the web is all that many people need, and targeting Chrome OS at them. But as people started to plug in devices and finding that they don't work, being unable to do simple things like save photos from their digital cameras locally, or write a document without having to be online, it seems that the company still has a long way to go to convince people that Chrome OS is a good idea, for any market.

Add true retweet functionality to Tweetie for Mac with ReTweetie
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Internet, Software

We know a ton of Mac users who use Tweetie for Mac as their desktop client of choice. However, since Twitter acquired Tweetie, they've kind of put the desktop client on the back burner. It still works and all, but newer features like lists and retweet are sorely missed. However, thanks to developer Nick Paulson, there's now a free SIMBL plugin that forces Tweetie to use Twitter's native retweeting functionality. We highly recommend it for all Tweetie users out there.

Twitter adds support for more embedded third-party services
Posted by Patrick Lambert Categories: Partnerships, Social Networks

When Twitter launched NewTwitter, their revamped web site, one of the improvements they added was the ability to embed pictures, music and videos in tweets. Anytime someone would link to a YouTube video for example, instead of appearing as a link on the Twitter site, the video contest would appear embedded in the Twitter app. Yesterday, Twitter announced that many more services are now supported by their embedding feature. Now, anytime a user links to Blip.TV, Instagr.am, Rdio, SlideShare and DipDive, the content will appear embedded right on Twitter. This is good news for users of the Twitter site, and something a lot of stand alone clients would benefit from. The company also says that they will keep adding more services in the coming months. It's interesting to see all the different ways Twitter can extend what 140 characters can contain.
Oh and remember, you can follow Gear Live on Twitter as well!
