When is free not really free? When it is DTV4PC for Windows XP/Vista. With it you can receive 1,056 live television channels from your PC. Using streaming media, choose between 186 streaming channels, 55 movie channels, local networks, 35 sports channels, and 876 additional channels. The one-time software download charge will cost you $29.99 with a free player included.

The Premium Package for $9.99 includes 156 more channels, DTV OnDemand is another $9.99, and upgrading Premium Support is also $9.99. All of them are yearly, so you are looking at quite a bit of change. Still, if you have a decent PC and monitor, it is cheaper than most cable with no monthly fees.

YouTube to Stream Olympics

Olympics/YouTube In an agreement with the International Olympic Committee, YouTube will be streaming 3 hours of recorded Olympic coverage per day. Countries like the U.S. and UK will be blocked since they will be receiving it on BBC and NBC. About 77 territories will have access to highlight reels and wrap-ups, but they will not be showing live events. Director of television and marketing for the IOC Timo Lumme claims that “for the first time in Olympic history we will have complete global online coverage.”

Dell and Wal-Mart Create Solution Station

Dell/Wal-mart logos It would appear that Dell is teaming with Wallyworld to create Solution Station, a service to help the electronically challenged. Help is offered for setting up PCs, TVs, wireless networks, entertainment centers, etc. Wal-mart plans to offer their service in the Dallas area in about 15 stores this month. Don’t try to pull a fast one on them as they only deal with “Dell and other branded systems.” Think of it as a bargain basement Geek Squad.

Panasonic Free-Angle HDMI Cable

Panasonic HDMI Flex Cable While there are plenty of flexible cords and cables for computers, Panasonic claims they have the planet’s first “free-angle” HDMI cable. The device has a version 1.3a high data transfer speed and is meant for flat panel displays. The cable can move 180º, which means you can reduce the 9cm of space usually needed behind a flatscreen to only 3 cm. Look for the flexible 1.5 and 3 meter cords to become available in August.

How Netflix’s Queue Works

Netflix logo Ever wonder how Netflix selects who gets the newest releases first? Apparently Sound and Vision Mag did. They contacted the company and although they wouldn’t reveal any trade secrets, they did divulge how the queues basically work. Here are some of their results:

Ordering a movie first does not necessarily mean you will be the first recipient.
The more popular the movie, the longer the wait.
The more films you watch, the less likely you are to receive new releases. (We hate that one.)
The more new releases you watch, the less likely you will receive other new movies. (Okay, that one is awful, too.)

Irregardless of our queue status and the algorithms used in them, we have to admit we are still Netflix advocates. It’s amazing how many obscure/old/cult films we have been able to screen with our subscription. And that makes it greatest thing since unsliced bread for us.

Channel Charger Ray Gun There is not much info available on this Channel Changer Ray Gun, but we figure it has to be even more functional than the SMK remote prototype that was shaped like a water pistol. Due out in August, you can pre-order now for £8.99 (~$17.00) and get ready for the new fall season on the Sci-Fi Channel, or a few old episodes of the myriad of Star Trek re-runs that seem to go on forever.

Every time we get a new gadget we get a new remote. While we suppose a universal one should be in order, we prefer the simplicity of the Remote Buddy. It holds up to 4 remotes with a cup holder for your fave brew. The outstanding thing about this is that it has one-touch buttons in case you lose one of the controls. Made of plastic, the 16 1/2 x 7 1/2 x 3 1/2-inch holder carries a MSRP of $59.98.

Maury’s Baby Maker Website

We aren’t really into the Maury Povich Show, but we decided to try out his baby maker anyway. You simply take two images and circle the major features and voila! you make a baby. Because some of us don’t do pictures, we tried our South Park pic and an Elvis M&M. The results are fairly gruesome, don’t you think? Even by cartoon standards, this is one ugly baby, and a more difficult program than most we have shown you. Try one for yourself, but don’t expect spectacular results.
