Warner Bros. Archive DVD on Demand

Warner Archive logo Good news for fans of classic movies and TV. Warner Brothers will release some of them on DVD for the first time. The online service is known as the Warner Archive Collection and will create each one on demand when ordered for $19.95 apiece. The site includes titles such as “Al Capone,” “I Was a Communist for the FBI” and “Edison the Man.” Right now there are about 150 films, but more will be offered in the future including more recent films.

Samsung Movies Open for Business

Samsung is the latest company to try to compete with their new dedicated movie store. Samsung Movies are available to the company’s cell phones, PCs and laptops. About 500 movies and TV shows are in the starting lineup, with an additional 1,000 to be added by the summer. Initially the service will only be available in the UK and Germany. Rentals start at a price of $3.49 while film sales start at $6.99.

DTV Transition Makes Man Shoot TV

Elvis TV We thought it most amusing when we learned that Elvis shot his TV when he would see Robert Goulet, but we guess this man took that kind of anger a bit too far. A man in Joplin, Mo. got so irritated at the DTV transition that when he lost his cable and couldn’t get the converter to work, he shot his television. Apparently, he had been drinking at the time, still that was an extreme reaction. He was charged with unlawful use of a firearm.

Steve Wozniak Cha Chas

We admit that we occasionally watch reality shows, especially when we hear that Apple’s co-founder is appearing on one. Steve Wozniak first appeared on a Segway to meet his partner Karina Smirnoff for his stint on “Dancing With the Stars.” We guess that was so he could convince her that he had some physical ability. We really like that he tried to turn his performance into something mathmatecal during rehearsal. The two performed a cha cha to the tune “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet” and unfortunately got the lowest score of the evening, a 13 out of 30.

Battlestar Galactica Props on eBay

Fans of Battlestar Galactica know it will soon be over. If you are one of them, you can bid on some of their props up for auction on eBay. Included are nameplates of some of the characters, dog tags, decals, stunt weapons and Baltar’s blood vials and blood slides. There is also some furniture, costumes and sketches done of the show that might eventually become collector’s items. You might want to get in your bid now as the Propworx auction ends Friday.

Studio FRST Double Aspect Ratio 16943 TV

Studio FRST has come up with an interesting prototype TV. The 16943 displays video in aspect ratios of both 16:9 and 4:3 so that whatever you are watching is properly framed. At a size of 618 x 840 x 120mm, there is a DVD player slot in the side. Placed on a glass stand, the idea is certainly interesting, especially as it would eliminate some of those annoying bars, and the name obviously fitting, but we are not sure that we could adjust to the jarring shape.

More Cable Media to Appear on Internet?

Several media companies are considering releasing programming on the Internet for paid subscribers. Such channels as HBO, MTV, Discovery, TLC, and Turner Broadcasting stations are included. Cable TV operators that pay networks a per-subscription fee each month have begun to complain that a lot of that content is free online. President of NBC UTG Jeff Gaspin said that it is important to “find ways to do business that protects that business model.” He added that it would involve a small fee or perhaps be a freebie. Should that be the case, it might mean that you should consider buying a better monitor as opposed to that new HDTV you were considering.

Turn ordinary sound into DTS surround sound on a home theater system when you send it through an optical or HDMI cable. Navigate your iPod on your TV, control playback and adjust settings with a wireless remote. Add a Creative wireless receiver to another room and your can hear your tunes there, too. The basic MovieWorks HD will set you back $249.99.

YouTube Testing Pay Per Download Videos

TouTube logo YouTube has begun testing a sub-set of their partners with a charge for download. Most of them are available for about $.99 but only as MP4 files. They can be purchased through Google Checkout. This may put an end to the problems that site has had with studios like Warner. If the program is successful, look for them to allow all of its partners to charge for movies and TV shows on the site.

Now you can watch 22 TV and 20 radio satellite channels in your car with AT&T CruiseCast. Watch or listen to kids, entertainment, documentary, music, comedy, news and sports channels. Working with RaySat, the system features a receiver and compact antenna for trucks, cars and SUVs that they claim overcomes out-of-sight obstacles like tunnels or trees. CruiseCast works with any existing rear seat entertainment system and will be available this spring for $1,299.00 plus ~$28.00 monthly subscription fee.
