IKEA reinvents HDTV with Uppleva (video!)

IKEA is coming to the rescue of wives everywhere who are fed up with the endless mess of tangled wires in the living room with its Uppleva HDTV. Yes, IKEA is making it's own HDTV, and it's pretty wonderful. First, the tech: 1080p LED display, Wi-Fi-ready, 400Hz, FM radio, DIVX HD, with three USB inputs and four HDMI inputs as well. So, what makes this television so special? It's the fact that the actual display part is just that - a display. All of the goods are built into the surrounding furniture, which is also part of Uppleva. For example, the television also has a Blu-ray player built-in - but it's located beneath the monitor, in the console area. All the wiring is built into the furnite, so it's not visible.
You can add in your own components, of course, and the wiring is handled the same way, allowing everything to be neat and tidy. Also cool? There is a vast array of colors and designs. Uppleva is modular, so you can build it out in any way you see fit. Expect it to launch in the fall for 6,500 Swedish crowns (that's $960 to those of us in the USA.) Wanna get a peek at how it works? Unboxing Live 093: Apple TV (2012)

In this episode of Unboxing Live, we give you a look at the new 2012 Apple TV. The main feature of the updated Apple TV is that it can display 1080p content. iTunes has been updated to support the 1080p resolution as well, which makes renting and buying content from iTunes at the highest quality look great on the new Apple TV and the new iPad as well. Netflix has also been updated to stream 1080p with the new device, which is powered by a single-core A5 processor. You can pick up the new Apple TV for $99.

LG 55-inch OLED HDTV priced at $7,900, coming this May

LG is ready to launch its first OLED HDTV in May during the Cannes film festival. The television set, which we first saw at CES, is priced at 9 million Won, or about $7,900, so this is definitely a premium product not meant for the masses. The company originally planned to launch the OLED TV during the London Olympics, but has expedited production in order to be the first one on the market with an OLED set at retail. Upon consumer reactions, LG will either continue its investment in the OLED market, or reexamine its direction. The internal review is said to take place in July.

Comcast Xfinity On Demand, HBO Go, MBL.tv now available on Xbox Live

Finally, after a number of months, Xbox Live users now have access to Xfinity On Demand from Comcast, HBO Go, and MLB.tv. To get 'em, just head to the App Marketplace on your Xbox 360. All three apps require that you have access to, and pay for, the respective services. Comcast has announced that use of the Xfinity On Demand service will not count against a users data cap because the data is delivered over Comcast's private IP network, rather than the public Internet. It kind of makes sense, as Comcast is basically saying that the Xbox 360 is simply functioning as a cable box, but giving its own data preferential treatment does raise eyebrows as it pertains to Net Neutrality laws.
To use HBO Go, your cable service must be approved (sadly, the cable service we use at Gear Live HQ, Frontier, is not eligible) and you must subscribe to HBO service through your cable package.
Both Xfinity On Demand and HBO Go are available in the U.S., while MLB.tv can be accessed throughout North America.
Google Fiber applies for permission to provide television packages
Some might remember the announcement from Google a while back that they were hooking up the good citizens of Kansas City Missouri with a fiber optic gigabit network. Google has since named its fiber optic network “Google Fiber” and has continued building out the network and is making further plans for the service. From the looks of things, Google is looking into providing more than just super-fast Internet speeds. According to The Wall Street Journal, the search giant has entered an application to the Missouri Public Service to gain permission to offer television service later this year, and its expected that Google would make a similar request in Kansas. According to sources the ability to watch TV through Google Fiber will not be free, but no official price point (or announcement, for that matter) has been set as of yet.

Amazon signs Viacom for Prime instant streaming

Good news for everyone owning a Kindle Fire and subscribed to Amazon Prime (as well as owners of any other media streaming device with Prime compatibility,) as Amazon has announced that it will now offer its subscribers increased instant streaming of videos to supported devices. The press release states that users will be able to stream TV shows from MTV, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, TV Land, Spike, VH1, BET, CMT and Logo.
All of this is made possible due to Amazon recently making a deal with Viacom, bringing the total number of available streaming offerings to over 15,000, all of which are supported on over 300 devices. Between Netflix, the Redbox-Verizon deal, and Amazon Prime, the streaming video subscription space is heating up!
Comcast to bring Skype video calls to Xfinity

Today, Comcast and Skype announced a partnership that will let Comcast customers make and accept wide-screen, high-definition video calls (as well as communicate via instant messages) through their television sets.
Skype on Comcast will let users identify incoming Skype calls via caller ID, accept incoming calls while watching TV, and import friends and colleagues' contacts from Facebook, Outlook, Gmail, and smartphone address books.
The Skype service will be delivered to Comcast customers via a combination of an adapter box, video camera, and a special remote that will let them input text as well as control their televisions. The other party does not need any special equipment beyond what is normally needed to use Skype.
