If you are fortunate enough to be able to take a vacation, Grillo may be a fine way to travel if you are the camping type. The concept vehicle has luggage racks, a cool space under the seat for keeping food fresh, and an electric system for connecting your MP3 player. The trike offers more stability than two wheels and the best part is the the back of the vehicle can be folded down and used as a table or tent support. We figure this would be quite useful for someone who spends longer than they would like to be among the first to get an iPhone.

General Motors Enlarging Windshield

General Motors researchers are working on a new windshield that gives those who have vision problems an easier way to see the road. The glass combines lasers, infrared sensors and a camera to enhance images on the road. The combined technology enlarges objects that are already in the driver’s view. While GM feels that the ideal target for this product would be the aging baby boomers, we are all for anyone who can use it and perhaps save a deer or two.

Leonhardt Gunbus Motorcycle

This is one mother of a bike. Clemens Leonhardt built what he calls the “world’s biggest motorcycle” at 3.47 meters in length and weighing 650 kg. The Leonhardt Gunbus has a 410-cubic inch, air-cooled, two-cylinder V-type engine. The tires, manufactured by Rigdon, are 38 x 11 and 42 x 15-inches. This is no prototype. PLX Kiwi Saves Fuel

Now that gas is ridiculously expensive, it might help to own a PLX Kiwi to make your vehicle more fuel efficient. The company claims that you can improve your mpg by up to 33%. The device can be mounted anywhere in your vehicle, and bases your personal “Kiwi score” on smoothness, drag, acceleration, and de-acceleration. The display shows your mpg, trip summary, and causes of engine problems. While it cannot be used with any vehicle earlier than 1996, it will certainly help you not only use less fuel but save the planet by reducing carbon dioxide emissions as well. If you cannot afford the $300.00 price tag, at the very least TAKE YOUR FOOT OFF THAT GAS PETAL!

VW Redesigns Eco Car

Take a look at Volkswagen’s revamped carbon-fiber microcar that gets over 200 mpg. The VW features two-cylinders, weighs a mere 660 lbs., and seats two. A basic model will include ABS/ESP, a driver’s airbag, a sequential motorbike-style transmission, as well as LED head and tail lights. Don’t look for extras though, as power steering and brakes won’t be available and air conditioning is optional. Set to debut in 2010, the price should be somewhere between $30,000.00 and $40,000.00.

NHTSA Tests Illusional Speed Bumps

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is testing a fake speed bump to see if drivers will slow down. The optical illusion looks like a 3-D pyramid when seen from a distance. The first experiment in Phoenix seemed to work until drivers realized that there were no barriers. This time the NHTSA will run a larger test in a Philadelphia residential area, hoping that they will reduce pedestrian accidents. The markers only cost $60.00 to $80.00 apiece as opposed to real speed bumps which can run $1,000.00 to $1,500.00. At least they are acting reasonably about the devices that they realize will probably have only the same effect as flashing lights.

Topia HUVO Electric Vehicle

Smaller than the Smart Car, but probably more dangerous in high traffic areas, is Topia’s HUVO, a prototype single-seated electric vehicle. Weighing only about 330 lbs., the vehicle has a body frame of high-tensile steel plate, doors and back of aluminum alloy, a roof of CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastic,) and a windshield of polycarbonate. The interior and wheel covers are made with ABS resin. We are thinking that you had better get lots of insurance with the HUVO, as running into a tree or a stiff wind would probably total the mini-car.

uconnect to Provide WiFi in Cars

It won’t be long before you can get WiFi in your car or truck. The “uconnect” system will be available in most 2009 Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep automobiles. The wireless technology is a dealer-installed extra and operates over cell phone lines. Users will be able to utilize laptops, cell phones, and MP3 players with an onboard control, even when moving. It also features GPS, a 30GB hard drive, and an option for satellite TV and radio. While there is a monthly fee involved, there is not yet a specific amount announced.
