The Tom Bihn Brain Cell - now better with memory foam

Posted by Sparky Categories: Accessories, Design, PC / Laptop,

Tom Bihn brain cell memory foamWe have written about Tom Bihn’s ultra-protective Brain Cell before, and were pleased to see this morning that the Brain Cell line has been updated with a memory foam lining which adds even more protection to the precious laptops they are designed to protect. The new strip of memory foam is nestled into the bottom of the Brain Cell - it’s the white layer shown in the picture to the right.

Memory foam plus the regular foam they use is better because it absorbs more energy due to its slower recovery than regular foam. The strip of memory foam at the bottom of the Brain Cell is an extra step and an extra layer of protection: should the case be dropped, the bottom of the foam sling will push into the memory foam instead of just air. If you have an expensive laptop and don’t have a case for it head over to ‘s website to pick up this $60 wonder bag to keep your laptop safe and sound from life’s little bumps and bruises.

Oh, and if you want to see how the bags are made, check out our Tom Bihn video tour.

Tom Bihn Smart Alec Laptop Backpack Review

Smart Alec & Accessories

Quality and Convenience. These are the words that immediately come to mind about Tom Bihn’s Smart Alec laptop backpack and accessories. Available in 4 color combinations, this bag is as stylish as it is functional. But let’s start with Quality. The large, roomy (18.5” x 11.75” x 7.75”), Smart Alec is made of 1050 denier Ballistic and 1000 denier Cordura nylons, and is lined with 500 denier Dupont Cordura nylon. Translation? This bag is strong, and seemingly indestructible, exemplified by their lifetime guarantee. Plus, both the back of the backpack and the straps are heavily padded. My first time out with Alec, I was carrying at least 10 pounds of laptop and other stuff—and yet Alec was surprising comfortable on my back. If you plan on using the Smart Alec as a laptop bag, I highly recommend the Brain Cell, a soft, lightweight but tough-as-nails shell for your computer, with 8mm of durable foam padding. The Brain Cell (which, with its two mesh pockets and shoulder strap attachments can itself be used as a laptop bag) is of the highest quality and durability. The Brain Cell even attaches to the interior of the Smart Alec with “Annex Clips”, further securing your precious PC. I actually dropped Alec twice—with my laptop inside—and wasn’t even remotely concerned about damage to my Gateway. That’s how confident I was in the Brain Cell (my laptop is just fine, by the way).

Review: I LOVES My Tom Bihn Cafe Bag

Tom Bihn Cafe Bag
So, I have had my Tom Bihn small Cafe Bag for over a month now and I just love, love it. Before I received it in the mail, I was always in a dilemma--do I bring a purse and diaper bag? Or just stuff some diapers, wipes, and a few toys into my purse for our 3 year old? I hated to carry both so I always opted for the diaper bag, and when it came to finding my wallet, keys, or cell phone in the deep chasm, it took me an eternity. Also, when Andru and I went out on our weekly date, I would always end up carrying a purse filled with baby paraphernalia because I had neglected to empty it before leaving--sometimes embarrassing when you are out at a nice restaurant and diapers and wipes come flying out of your purse as you reach for your lipstick.

The Tom Bihn Ego Debuts

Posted by Sparky Categories: Design, PC / Laptop, Peripherals,

Tom Bihn Ego

Tom Bihn has long made Gear Live’s favorite bags, be it messenger, backpack, or briefcase. Today they have improved their line by adding the Ego, a mid sized messenger bag/brief case that offers the features of the Super Ego with a smaller size similar to the ID. The Super Ego has been a best of breed bag for quite some time offering tons of pockets, sturdy construction, and stylish looks - but it’s been too big for some people looking to carry just a laptop and a few essentials. The Ego fills that void by taking the Super Ego and shrinking it by about 30% into a more manageable size.

The Ego is priced at $130 (a steal considering the build quality and protection it affords), which is slightly cheaper than it’s big brother the $140 Super Ego. Our initial impressions from dropping by Tom Bihn factory are very positive and they were kind enough to provide us with a review unit so we will be posting one of our in depth reviews in the next couple of weeks.

Looking for other Tom Bihn bags we have reviewed? Check out the Imago, Id, Archetype, Brain Cell, Brain Bag, and Monolith.

Tom Bihn ImagoRecently Gear Live had the opportunity to review another model from the Seattle based bag artist and engineer - Tom Bihn. This time I was reviewing the Imago, a stylish shoulder bag designed for the on-the-go professional.

The Imago solves the problem of what to do when you have a big data-centric phone, camera, PDA (or even a small laptop), keys, cords, USB drives, and all the other bits of clutter that life necessitates and no place to put them.

Find out more about the Imago, and get detail impressions after the jump.

Bleeding Edge Byte 029: Tom Bihn Archetype Review

We recently gave you a first-hand look at what goes in to making a Tom Bihn bag. Now we take a look at one of their specific products, the Archetype laptop bag. The Archetype is unique in that the outside is made of a natural cork fabric. It’s a bit trippy at first because it’s, you know, cork. However, the point of the bag is to protect your mobile computer. We show you the bag and discuss it’s pros and cons in this episode.

The Bleeding Edge 019: A Visit To Tom Bihn

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Design, Features, PC / Laptop, Videocasts,

In this episode, we take a visit to the Tom Bihn labs, where we get a first hand look into exactly what it takes to design and manufacture their awesome line of bags. We take a tour of their facility, and talk with Tom about concept, design, manufacturing, as well as a few stories about how they stress test their stuff. I mean, when a bag gets blown up in war over in Iraq, but your computer that was in the bag is protected perfectly, you know these things are good.
