The Tom Bihn Brain Cell - now better with memory foam

We have written about Tom Bihn’s ultra-protective Brain Cell before, and were pleased to see this morning that the Brain Cell line has been updated with a memory foam lining which adds even more protection to the precious laptops they are designed to protect. The new strip of memory foam is nestled into the bottom of the Brain Cell - it’s the white layer shown in the picture to the right.
Memory foam plus the regular foam they use is better because it absorbs more energy due to its slower recovery than regular foam. The strip of memory foam at the bottom of the Brain Cell is an extra step and an extra layer of protection: should the case be dropped, the bottom of the foam sling will push into the memory foam instead of just air. If you have an expensive laptop and don’t have a case for it head over to Tom Bihn‘s website to pick up this $60 wonder bag to keep your laptop safe and sound from life’s little bumps and bruises.

Tom Bihn Smart Alec Laptop Backpack Review

Quality and Convenience. These are the words that immediately come to mind about Tom Bihn’s Smart Alec laptop backpack and accessories. Available in 4 color combinations, this bag is as stylish as it is functional. But let’s start with Quality. The large, roomy (18.5” x 11.75” x 7.75”), Smart Alec is made of 1050 denier Ballistic and 1000 denier Cordura nylons, and is lined with 500 denier Dupont Cordura nylon. Translation? This bag is strong, and seemingly indestructible, exemplified by their lifetime guarantee. Plus, both the back of the backpack and the straps are heavily padded. My first time out with Alec, I was carrying at least 10 pounds of laptop and other stuff—and yet Alec was surprising comfortable on my back. If you plan on using the Smart Alec as a laptop bag, I highly recommend the Brain Cell, a soft, lightweight but tough-as-nails shell for your computer, with 8mm of durable foam padding. The Brain Cell (which, with its two mesh pockets and shoulder strap attachments can itself be used as a laptop bag) is of the highest quality and durability. The Brain Cell even attaches to the interior of the Smart Alec with “Annex Clips”, further securing your precious PC. I actually dropped Alec twice—with my laptop inside—and wasn’t even remotely concerned about damage to my Gateway. That’s how confident I was in the Brain Cell (my laptop is just fine, by the way).

The Tom Bihn Ego Debuts

Tom Bihn has long made Gear Live’s favorite bags, be it messenger, backpack, or briefcase. Today they have improved their line by adding the Ego, a mid sized messenger bag/brief case that offers the features of the Super Ego with a smaller size similar to the ID. The Super Ego has been a best of breed bag for quite some time offering tons of pockets, sturdy construction, and stylish looks - but it’s been too big for some people looking to carry just a laptop and a few essentials. The Ego fills that void by taking the Super Ego and shrinking it by about 30% into a more manageable size.
The Ego is priced at $130 (a steal considering the build quality and protection it affords), which is slightly cheaper than it’s big brother the $140 Super Ego. Our initial impressions from dropping by Tom Bihn factory are very positive and they were kind enough to provide us with a review unit so we will be posting one of our in depth reviews in the next couple of weeks.

Recently Gear Live had the opportunity to review another model from the Seattle based bag artist and engineer - Tom Bihn. This time I was reviewing the Imago, a stylish shoulder bag designed for the on-the-go professional.
The Imago solves the problem of what to do when you have a big data-centric phone, camera, PDA (or even a small laptop), keys, cords, USB drives, and all the other bits of clutter that life necessitates and no place to put them.

The Archetype is unique in that the outside is made of a natural cork fabric. It’s a bit trippy at first because it’s, you know, cork.
