TiVo Bolt review

TiVo Bolt review

After using the TiVo Bolt Unified Entertainment System extensively over the past few months, and waiting for a couple of software updates to drop that ended up improving the product (making it even better than it was at launch,) I'm ready to hit you with my full thoughts in my full TiVo Bolt review. In the day and age of cord-cutting, of ubiquitous cable company-offerred DVRs, and of the influx of 4K content, does TiVo still have a place? Is the TiVo Bolt worth your time and attention? Continue reading for my thoughts!

Bleeding Edge TV 556: TiVo Bolt movie theater prank

TiVo just pranked a movie theater full of people in order to show off its new TiVo Bolt DVR! I flew down to Boulder, CO to be a part of the #TiVoSurprise event, where people were invited to see a screening of the James Bond 007: Spectre movie at the local Cinebarre. Near the end of the movie, commercial interruptions started happening, and people grew more and more upset at each one, with metal popcorn bowls and glass bottles getting thrown at the screen! Finally, TiVo came out and revealed the prank, and as a reward for hanging in there, everyone in the theater went home with a free TiVo Bolt with a one-year subscription included. It was very cool, and very funny to witness. Check it out in the video, and feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments!

Unboxing Live 179: TiVo Bolt

TiVo is back with an all new DVR: TiVo Bolt! More of a side-grade than an upgrade from the TiVo Roamio Plus and Roamio Pro (see our TiVo Roamio Pro review), the TiVo Bolt is the first TiVo DVR to offer 4K UHD resolution. You can currently stream content from both Netflix and YouTube in 4K, with more to come soon (hopefully Amazon!)

The two other major features of the TiVo Bolt are QuickMode and SkipMode. With SkipMode, TiVo allows you to completely skip over blocks of commercials with the press of a button for prime time shows that air on the top 20 TV networks. QuickMode allows you to speed up your TV watching, playing the content at 1.3x the normal speed. Voices still sound as they should, but the show just plays a little faster, allowing you to get through them quicker.

The shape of the box is a bit odd, and the two-tone black and white remote is a departure as well, but the Bolt is faster and more responsive than any previous model. It can also record up to four shows at once.

You can order the TiVo Bolt now.

2015 Holiday Gift Guide: TiVo Bolt

TiVo Bolt

TiVo has been around for a long time, and in an attempt to appeal to a wider audience, it’s released the TiVo Bolt - going from just DVR to Unified Entertainment System--and it's good enough to be included in our 2015 Holiday Gift Guide. The standout feature is SkipMode, which allows you to skip commercials when watching your favorite shows with the press of a single button. QuickMode is also cool, playing shows at 1.3x speed with pitch correction, so you can get through those binge-watching sessions even quicker. It’s 4K-compatible, and supports a bunch of streaming video services (although Amazon Prime Instant Video seems to be absent for some odd reason.) TiVo still sports the best DVR interface in the business, and the Bolt includes one year of TiVo service with purchase.

You can pick up the 500GB TiVo Bolt now (or if you need more space, grab the 1TB TiVo Bolt!)

Sleeptracker Watch review

Sure, we've given you a list of our top 10 most popular stories of 2013, but we figured we'd go a bit more broad than that. We also thought it would be interesting to give you a look at the top ten most read stories on this site this year, period, regardless of what year they were posted. We must say, we're just as surprised as you are at what did (and didn't) make the list! For example, you guys seem to really like Apple. Here we go:

  1. Sleeptracker Watch review: This one focuses on a watch that tracks your sleep data and aims to wake you up when you are in your lightest phase of sleep. The result is that you wake up feeling more rested, and more refreshed.

  2. Flash on iPhone is just around the corner: This five-year-old article made it's way back after being linked to by John Gruber of Daring Fireball. Since then we've learned that just because it's in testing behind closed doors, doesn't mean that it's going to make it's way to public release. Also, John, why couldn't you have linked to when we broke what was the biggest Apple software leak of the decade?

  3. Mod your Xbox without a mod chip: This is an all-time favorite of our readers. It dropped out of the top 10 last year, but has reappeared for 2013.

  4. Apparently that Xbox 360 Red Ring of Doom issue hasn't been fixed

  5. OS X 10.9 Mavericks Developer Preview 3 now available

  6. How To Mod Your iPhone on Windows Using iBrickr

  7. Apple releases iOS 7 beta 2 with iPad support: iOS 7 beta 1 supported the iPhone and iPod touch only. When beta 2 arrived with iPad support, many were excited.

  8. TiVo out-of-home remote streaming arrives on Roamio Plus, Roamio Pro DVRs: We'd been waiting for this feature for a long, long time, and it is finally here.

  9. Exclusive details on the next Nike+ FuelBand: We got exclusive details on the new Nike+ FuelBand months before its release.

  10. iPhone 5s review: Our review of Apple's flagship smartphone for 2013.

Any surprises? For a trip down memory lane, check out the top ten most-read stories in 2012, 2011, 2010.

We've also compiled a list of the stories that have dropped out of the top ten between 2012 and 2013, which you can check out after the jump, and don't miss the ten most popular Gear Live videos of 2013 either!

TiVo Roamio Pro review

TiVo Roamio Pro review

What's exciting about the new TiVo Roamio DVR line is that it's been a while since TiVo last released some new hardware. Three and a half years, in fact. That's when the TiVo Premiere debuted, promising an HD interface and dual-core chip that was supposed to bring about speed and efficiency. Well, the Premiere failed to live up to the hype, and TiVo went back to the drawing board and spent a few years building Roamio.

TiVo Roamio is actually a line of three DVRs that range in price from $199 to $599, with four tuners built-in to the standard Roamio, and six tuners in the Roamio Plus and Pro models. The Plus and Pro also have integrated TiVo Stream functionality, too, allowing you to watch TiVo content on your iOS devices wherever you have Wi-Fi. Has TiVo done enough to earn your attention and hard-earned dollar with the Roamio DVR? Join us for our full TiVo Roamio Pro review as we answer just that.
