Quote Of The Day: Jim Starlin
Posted by Tom Mason Categories: Editorials, Marvel Comics,
“This is probably one of the first concept drawings of Thanos I ever did, long before I started working at Marvel. Jack Kirby's Metron is clearly the more dominant influence in this character's look. Not Darkseid. Both D and T started off much smaller than they eventually became. This was one of the drawings I had in my portfolio when I was hired by Marvel. It was later inked by Rich Buckler.”

No matter how much buzz the Alien prequel Prometheus attained, it wasn't enough to win over the parents and their kids who saw Madagascar 3 this weekend.
With a cool $60.3 million, the animated family flick debuted on top, considerably beating out Ridley Scott's latest film's $51 million take. Last week's number one film, Snow White and the Huntsman fell to number three with $23 million while Men in Black III and The Avengers took in $13.8 million and $11.2 million, respectively.

Is it Chris Hemsworth's amazing hair? Was it the aggressive marketing campaign? Is Kristen Stewart actually a box office draw? Whatever it was, something prompted movie-goers this weekend to spend their dollars towards Snow White and the Huntsman -- approximately $56.2 million of them.
Men in Black 3, therefore, was bumped down from its short-lived number one spot to number two with $29.3 million. Marvel's The Avengers dropped to number three with a decent $20.2 million. Battleship dipped down one spot to number four with $4.8 million while The Dictator rounded out the top five with $4.7 million.

Tom Hiddleston: I Was ‘Rubbish’ in Thor
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Paramount, Action, Adaptation, Science Fiction, Sequels, Thrillers, Celeb News, New Releases, Scripts,
Tom Hiddleston thought he was "rubbish" in Thor.
The 31-year-old star feels "very lucky" that director Joss Whedon enjoyed his performance as Thor's (Chris Hemsworth) brother Loki in the Kenneth Branagh-helmed superhero movie, so much so he wanted him to play a big part in The Avengers.
"There was no guarantee that it was going to be such a big part, I think. And I also felt like I'd been rubbish in Thor - there was no way I was going to come back. So it was one step at a time and I was very lucky that, as we were coming to the end of shooting Thor, Ken Branagh showed Joss a rough cut of the film and Joss loved it, he loved what Ken had done with it and was really about what Chris and I had done on it. And [Whedon] said, 'I want to take that relationship and make the stakes higher. You've got these two brothers who are fighting each other and now what's at stake is the fate of Planet Earth, because that's what's going on.' So it's really exciting."

Who says lightning can't strike thrice?
Although The Avengers had a good three weeks at the top of the box office, Will Screen's return to the big screen in Men in Black 3 took in $55 million, finally bumping the Marvel flick down to #2. The superheroes, however, didn't go down without a fight, taking in close to $37 million this Memorial Day weekend. Battleship sunk to #3 with $10.8 million while The Dictator fell to #4 with $9.6 million. Horror film The Chernobyl Diaries debuted at number five with $8 million.

Quote of the Day: Andrew Garfield on The Avengers
Posted by Robin Paulson Categories: Buena Vista, Disney, Action, Adaptation, Adventure, Science Fiction, Thrillers, Celeb News, New Releases,
"I saw it, and I was blown away. And I'm going to see it again this weekend. I have no problem adding to the amount of money it's making! [Laughs.] Joss Whedon is a genius, and it's an incredible cast. I was very, very jealous, and I wanted to jump on the screen and play with them. It killed me that I wasn't in it, but I understand why, and I'm not insulted. But hey, if Samuel L. Jackson wants to give me a shout, I'm there for the next one!"
-- Andrew Garfield, who will star in the upcoming The Amazing Spider-Man as the eponymous comic book hero, on Marvel's The Avengers.

Nothing is quite like the force of The Avengers.
The superhero film took in $55 million this weekend, which was a 46% drop from last weekend, but it still managed to do more than double what Battleship's debut took in ($25.3 million). The Dictator also debuted this week, securing third place at the box office with $17.4 million. Dark Shadows dropped two spots to number 4 with $12.8 million while the new comedy What to Expect When You're Expecting debuted at number 5 with $10.5 million.

Quote Of The Day: The Avengers
Posted by Tom Mason Categories: Movies, Reviews, Marvel Comics,
“There's no more blatant sexism than sneering at a woman for playing 'dress-up' in a movie where the men around her are dressed in tights and robot costumes. The belief that superhero movies are a No Girls Allowed zone couldn't be more obvious.”

Avengers Assemble Links!

Because we're all about The Avengers 24/7/365, here are a bunch of nice Avengers links that haven't been abused too much by the internets.
Assemble! My pal, the comics historian Peter Sanderson, takes a look at The Avengers. The money quote: “That climactic battle between the Avengers and Loki’s invading forces, in the heart of New York City, captured the fantastic spectacle and visceral excitement that the superhero genre can create more fully than I had ever imagined seeing in a live action film.”
