Comic Book Jobs: Northern Michigan U

Posted by Tom Mason Categories: Editorials

Graduation DayHeads up, Eggheads.

If you’re tired of the grind of drawing comic books for a living and would like a job with steady hours, summers off and a chance at tenure, then it might be time to go back to school. And teach about drawing comic books.

Northern Michigan University (Marquette, MI) is looking for an Assistant Professor of Illustration in their School of Art And Design.

They want “an energetic illustrator with previous university/college teaching experience, which could include graduate teaching assistantships.” So I guess your fill-in issue on The Fantastic Four won’t count for much.

There are a lot of requirements, as there would be for any teaching position, but one stood out: “Knowledge and understanding of concept art and sequential art (storyboarding/comic book) are also important.”

They’re going to want you to start teach in the fall, August 2011, and they’re accepting applications through March 7, so you have about a month to get your resume together and make your pitch.

Good luck, Professors!

Comic Book Jobs: Checking Out Craigslist

LubaIf you’re one of the many looking for work via Craigslist, you can bet they have something similar to work posted there.

Let’s take a look!

A micro-budget film that appears to be based on Gilbert Hernandez’s Luba stories from Love & Rockets is looking for their very own Luba. I think there are only a couple of requirements.

In Los Angeles, Planet Bravo is looking for teachers for their UCLA Lab in Westwood. It’s for a kids’ afterschool program and you can create your own course (past courses have included Comic Book Creation). And it’s a paid gig!

In Vancouver, there’s a guy - and you know it’s a guy - looking for an artist who’s willing to draw 17 “hot girls” in comic book style.

Good luck, job seekers!

Comic Book Jobs: Teaching Comic Book Movies

John BelushiCan you teach? Can you teach in Canada, ey?

And more importantly, can you teach Canadians about “The Comic Book Film”?

It’s no great secret that the comic book film has permeated popular culture over the years. It’s so ubiquitous, in fact, that even tweedy, slow-to-change universities have noticed it.

It’s even spread to Canada, to the campus of the University of Manitoba.

They’re looking for a “Sessional Instructor” for their Film Studies program (Summer Session).

You’ll be teaching three classes: The Art of Film, Film History and Film Genres: The Comic Book Film. Each class is 2.5 hours long and the session runs from May 2 - June 21, 2011.

Are there a lot of requirements? It’s a teaching position, Professor Sherlock, so do the math. There are a lot of requirements and a lot of hoops to jump through.

MoCCA: Paul Levitz, Stephen DeStefano, Robert Sikoryak

Masterpiece ComicsIs The Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art the smartest kid in class? Their fall education programs make me want to hit Hotwire for a cheap flight to NYC and spend a few months with a laptop and some pencils.

My old friend Danny Fingeroth, the Senior VP of Education for MoCCA, gets a tip of my cap for putting together an excellent slate of programs.

Here’s a peek at the list:

Robert Sikoryak and Kriota Willberg are teaching “Anatomy For Cartoonists Workshop” (4 sessions). “This course will teach students how to create real or imaginary characters — in any style — that are consistent and believable.” Bonus: “nude models will be employed.” Nude models should never be unemployed, even in a recession.

Sikoryak is the author of the recently released Masterpiece Comics and his work appears frequently on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Kriota Willberg teaches anatomy for cartoonists and illustrators at The Center For Cartoon Studies.

Comic Book Jobs: Comic Strips and Graphic Novels

Popeye Comic StripI was scanning the job listings the other day and found a bunch of teaching jobs. Somewhere between Composition I and II and Finance instructors, I found an opportunity for someone to teach Literature of Comic Books and the Graphic Novel. Where was this class when I was a lazy student?

The job awaits you at the Art Center Design College in Tucson, Arizona. Job duties of the graphic novel instructor are typical teacher stuff: “Instruct students according to the established curriculum provided by the General Education Department, grade all assignments, quizzes, and exams, and attend all instructor meetings.”

You need the usual requirements, and there are benefits including a “potential for full time faculty positions” and a “stable work environment.” Both of which cannot be overstated.

If you’d rather “do” than “teach,” here’s an odd listing that’s been up for awhile. It might already be filled, but I can’t find confirmation of that.
