TBS Makes a Hit…or Mistake?
Get Smart. Indiana Jones. Re-making old classics is the latest trend on movies…so why can’t the same technique be applied to TV? I’ll admit - I’m a huge game show fan. Any game, any time, I play along and I usually do quite well. True TV game-players know where the best action can be found: GSN. But in this age of old-is-new, where past ideas are suddenly no longer passé, the classics come alive. In this case, it’s Match Game.
A show with a long history that just got a little bit longer. Match Game originally hit the air in 1962 on NBC, running for seven seasons before cancellation. This is not the most famous version of the show. Match Game didn’t hit its real stride until it found a home on CBS in 1973. The episodes have resulted in some of the most popular programming GSN has ever ran, and for good reason.
I can summon this up for you in just two words: Richard Dawson.

MONDAY (6/9)
- The Bachelorette (ABC, 8pm): “DeAnna accuses the 9 remaining bachelors of refusing to take the competition seriously, but first she invites them to compete in a singing contest.” I don’t understand why those guys don’t see the importance of a proper serenade.
- Quads with 2 Moms (Discovery Health, 8pm): “A same-sex couple who want to become parents undergo fertility treatments and both become pregnant with twins.” I just can’t believe Oprah didn’t get a hold of this story first!
- Greek (ABC Family, 8pm): Season finale. “The Cyprus-Rhodes students head to the beach for Spring Break where Casey finally decides to leave the past behind and cut loose.” And by “decides”, we mean she finally “downs” a couple of shots and forgets the past.
- Nashville Star (NBC, 9pm): Season/network premiere. “Billy Ray Cyrus takes over the hosting from Jewel, who moves to the judges’ table alongside country stars John Rich and Jeffrey Steele.” I never thought the day would come when I would compare Jewel to Paula Abdul.

King Kong’s 75th Anniversary

To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the original King Kong, three television networks will be teaming up to honor the classic film.
On April 7th, Turner Classic Movies will broadcast the 1933 movie starring screen legend Fay Wray as Ann Darrow. This black-and-white RKO production, which debuted during the height of the Depression era, earned more than $1.7 million during its run.
Four days later, TNT, TBS and TCM will simulcast an airing of the 2005 version with Naomi Watts in the lead role. Although a remake featuring Jessica Lange hit theaters in 1976, Peter Jackson‘s update is considered truer to the original.
Immediately after April 7’s showing, Turner Classic Movies will air four other films hitting their diamond anniversaries: Dinner at Eight, Little Women, 42nd Street and Queen Christina.

Need a cure for the rerun blues? Forget about network and don’t worry about repeats - if you’ve never seen the show, it’s not a rerun to you. Get acquainted with some of the shows you may not even know about…and in some cases, you might wonder how you ever got along without them.
Cable TV offers plenty of diversion, and sure a lot of shows get repeated. But in the middle of a writers strike while studios scramble to find anything to put on the tube, those obscure (and hilarious) cable shows may just become the saving grace of evening TV watching. Christmas Day TV

Looking for a distraction from the holiday season? Want to check out that new HD TV Santa left under the tree? Or, do you just want to put something on the tube to undercut happy holiday melodrama? Use Christmas Day TV to give you an escape when holiday pressure has you looking for the nearest exit.
ABC will offer fanciful diversion for the kids with the Walt Disney World parade starting at 10 am. Later in the afternoon, the network will offer NBA action while CBS gets sporty with golf. NBC will show the Holiday Celebration on Ice in the afternoon. On cable, ABC Family will showcase holiday movies including A Very Brady Christmas and Santa Baby. At 6 in the evening, Disney’s The Incredibles will offer CGI delight.

Ellen DeGeneres to Host Variety Show

Back in the day, variety shows were all the rage… now, not so much. Ellen DeGeneres hopes to change that with a new variety show on TBS. And really, who better to do it than Ellen? Her huge appeal makes her a natural choice and I’m sure fans of her stand-up and talk show will be tuning in for a glimpse of what could be a fun little show. Ellen’s Really Big Show, as it will be called, will debut on November 18th on TBS—a two-hour special that will be shot during The Comedy Festival earlier in November. The show will feature both music and comedy… and, of course, Ellen. According to DeGeneres, “I’m very happy to be working with TBS. I usually put two TBS of sugar in my coffee every day, so this is a dream come true for me.” Ha! If you liked that line, expect plenty more during the variety show. Michael Wright, TBS programming chief had nothing but praise for DeGeneres, saying, “It’s especially exciting to see her bring back the variety special format, which for decades provided television with some of its most memorable performances.” No details yet on what performers will grace the “really big show,” but it certainly should be an entertaining couple of hours.

‘Earl’ and ‘The Office’ Reruns Coming to TBS

Wow, did you catch last night’s marathon of The Office? I caught the last half of “Casino Night” and it really brought back all of those old Pam and Jim feelings. When Jim puts it out there that he loves Pam… then later kisses her. Sigh. Add to that the slightly teary-eyed Jim when she rejected him—wow, that’s a great episode. And now, The Office will live on in reruns on TBS. Ditto for My Name is Earl, another solid NBC comedy… both Earl and The Office are part of what made NBC “must see,” at least in my sad little existence. Anyway, TBS will begin airing the pair in the fall, for the low-low cost of $600,000-$700,000 per episode. No details on what timeslots these will hold—and with Friends, Sex and the City, Seinfeld, King of Queens, Everybody Loves Raymond and Family Guy, there will be plenty of funny on TBS (except for Raymond, which I have never found too funny).

Comic Relief Makes a Comeback

Remember how great Comic Relief used to be? They were wildly successful at raising money, yet somehow they stopped making new ones. Hard to believe that it’s been eight years since the last Comic Relief special. After the long hiatus, Comic Relief returns to HBO this fall—raising money for the Hurricane Katrina recovery. For those without HBO, their Time Warner “sibling” TBS will also air the Comic Relief 2006 concert live on Saturday, November 18th. The special is taking place in Las Vegas and it’s good to hear that the original hosts will be returning. Robin Williams, Whoopi Goldberg and Billy Crystal originally hosted Relief in 1986 and hosted the first eight concerts.
“Disasters like Katrina devastate the environment and cause suffering for all forms of life, both human and animal,” says Bob Zmuda, Comic Relief’s founder and president. “Comic Relief is determined to address these tragedies by benefiting everyone from the elderly to children and pets.” Look for live segments from New Orleans during the three hour show. The specifics of the performers have not yet been released.
