Apple is Second in Music Sales
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Apple, Corporate News, Music,
Apple must be positively giddy at hearing the news that the iTunes Store is now the #2 retailer of music, second only to Wally World. The company claims that it sold 20 million tunes on Christmas Day alone. Based on an NPD Group survey, the top four also included Best Buy and Target. The study also concluded that about 29 million consumers, ages 36 to 50, acquired music legally. They were those that had recently purchased (or received) MP3 players. That was an increase of 5 mill over the year before. That’s a lot of assuaged guilt.

The Special Edition Pink iPod shuffle for Breast Cancer
Posted by Lolita Beckwith Categories: Music, Portable Audio / Video,
Most people associate October with Halloween, but did you know it’s also National Breast Cancer Awareness month? That’s why Target is selling a Special Edition pink iPod shuffle—packaged with an iTunes gift card worth $15. Considering you’re getting this for the same $79 USD that a regular shuffle costs (sans card), this is a great deal, plus a portion of the proceeds go toward the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, totaling $25,000. Interested? You’d better hurry, as this deal is only available at Target “brick-and-mortar” stores, and we suspect it will sell out fast…
Target Picks Blu-ray for Holiday 2007
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Corporate News, Home Entertainment, Movies,
It seems that Target is semi-following in Blockbuster’s footsteps as far as the next-generation high definition DVD format war goes, as they have made a move that solidly puts them behind Blu-ray this holiday season. Target announced today that it would start selling standalone Blu-ray players in their brick-and-mortar locations beginning this fall. This obviously leads into the holiday rush. Consumers will be able to purchase the Sony BDP-S300 at $499 USD, as well as have the option to select from an expanded selection of Blu-ray movie titles. This is the first standalone high-definition player that Target has made available in stores, but they do also sell the Blu-ray PS3 and Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on.
Back in June, Blockbuster announced Blu-ray exclusivity in it’s retail stores as well, citing that in test markets the format was rented far more than HD DVD was. They do, however, continue to rent HD DVD through Blockbuster Online and Blockbuster Total Access. Target will also continue selling both HD DVD titles and Blu-ray titles in stores, but we expect that Blu-ray section to grow a bit larger.
Target spokesperson Brie Heath told the Associated Press that this isn’t a political move. “We are not proclaiming one format vs. the other as the preferred consumer technology, and software will continue to be available to our guests in both the Blu-ray and HD DVD format,” said Brie. We’ll see how this all plays out in the fourth quarter.
Rumor: Target’s Wii Allocation Leaked
Posted by Christopher Sasaki Categories: Nintendo, Wii,
A post on the IGN boards purports to be a listing of the Wii allocations of each Target store for the console’s launch. There are two lists, one list of allocations and another that lists which store number belongs to a particular location. For those that do not want to do the matching, another user has kindly coded a quick application that will let users search for the particular store that they are interested in. If true, this information combined with the previous guide to getting a Wii on launch day should help gamers decide where to spend their time camping out when the console is released on November 19.
Update: A member of Infendo’s forums details Target’s launch day plans here, and confirms that the allocation numbers are accurate. According to this information, stores open at their normal times, tickets get handed out at 7:00 AM for people in line. It is starting to sound like there are going to be tons of Wii consoles hitting the market on launch day, given Target’s fairly large allocations.

Where to get your Wii/PS3 If You Didn’t Pre-order
Posted by Michael Cardiff Categories: Accessories, PlayStation 3, Release Dates, Wii,
Nintendo fanboy site Wiiloaded has offered up some advice for those seeking out next-gen consoles that didn’t have the chance to pre-order. While their article deals with getting your hands on Nintendo’s latest console, the same tips would seem to apply to Sony’s PS3 as well (although you might have to be closer to the front of the line to guarantee yourself a PS3, given the paltry 400,000 PS3’s available to the U.S.).
Among their tips? BestBuy will probably be the “most fun” waiting line, with lots of hardcore gamers and their lawnchairs, sleeping bags, and portable gaming systems of choice. However, given that BestBuy will only open an hour early for the Wii launch, Wiiloaded gives Wal-mart their “Stay Warm” rating - you should be able to pick up the console at midnight at most of their locations. Similarly, another great tip is the idea of looking up Sam’s Clubs and/or Costcos in your area - these venues tend to be overlooked and often have good deals on console bundles, so they may be a great last resort if you’re number 37 in line at a BestBuy that’s been allocated 36 Wiis.
Enjoy the list! And start stocking up on supplies to stay warm - you’ve only got 2 weeks left to plan.
