Islanders’ Mark Streit gone with shoulder injury

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Injuries, NHL,

Mark StreitMark Streit’s season may be over before it started. The Islanders’ defenseman will likely miss six months after injuring his shoulder during an intrasquad game after being hit by Matt Moulson and falling into the boards. Streit will undergo surgery to repair what initially appears to be a torn labrum and torn rotator cuff, but he may also have suffered a dislocation. The Islanders will have to scramble to find somebody who can fill Streit’s skates and hopefully do at least half the job that he did.

The final days of the 2009-10 NHL season

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: NHL, Playoffs,

Matt DucheneWith only six days left in the NHL season, there are still four playoff spots yet to be clinched, and a lot more seeds to be finalized. The Eastern Conference is still pretty open, with Montreal, Boston, Philadelhpia, NY Rangers and Atlanta competing for three spots. We know teams one-through-seven in the Western Conference, but that final place will see the toughest competition, as all of Colorado, Calgary, St. Louis and Anaheim compete for it.

Yankees sub-.500 spring not scaring anybody

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB,

Derek JeterThe New York Yankees are under .500 in Spring Training. Cleveland and San Francisco sit on top of the Cactus League, while the Dodgers, Angels and Mariners are all struggling for wins. Is there any cause for concern here? Of course not. Everybody knows that the standings don’t matter in the Spring. You don’t get an edge by winning the Grapefruit League or the Cactus League. There’s no incentive to having the best record. Everybody is 0-0 again on Opening Day.

Sabres have Canadiens number

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL, Playoffs,

Sabres/CanadiensThe Montreal Canadiens, who outplayed the Buffalo Sabres for 57 minutes on Wednesday night, managed to salvage a point and take sole possession of sixth place in the Eastern Conference, but it was at great expense. As one of the hottest teams since the Olympic break, Montreal really folded up last night. After taking a 2-0 lead, thanks to a pair from Andrei Kostitsyn, Buffalo’s late pressure resulted in the equalizing goals coming with 1:59 and then :48 left in the game. They went on to win in a shootout.

Wings looking up, but not that far up

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: NHL, Playoffs,

Pavel DatsyukThe Winged Wheels are back on track. Or road. Or flying. Or wherever a “winged wheel” would be used. Either way, the Detroit Red Wings are playing hot and back into a playoff position standing firm as they try to repel the naysayers. The playoffs are on the horizon and as it stands now, the Red Wings are playing some of their best hockey of the season and are moving up the standings in the Western Conference.

The worst teams have more than that in common

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Front Office, NHL,

Ron WilsonAre there any coaches liked less than Ron Wilson? His comments about Team Canada after their Olympic victory against his American squad have put him under the spotlight and fans are calling for his head. Now back as the head honcho of the last-place team in the Eastern Conference, Wilson is once again just the most recent of a string of Leaf coaches who are going through rough times. The three worst records in the NHL belong to the Hurricanes, Leafs, and Oilers. With a combined record of 63-100-24, all three have more than just that in common. The three coaches are the three most recent heads of the Maple Leafs.

Winter ends, Spring Training begins

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: MLB,

Manny RamirezThis year, the end of the Winter Olympics will usher in spring, as the Major League Baseball Spring Training season kicks in on Tuesday when the Braves and the Mets throw the year’s first baseballs at each other. It’s easy to get caught up in the standings and to see your team do well through March and expect big things throughout the year as a result, but be careful with that. Spring Training is not so much about winning and losing as it is seeing what you have.

Overtime points are ruining the NHL

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: NHL,

Milan MichalekGoing into Saturday’s NHL games, the standings were what they were thanks in large part to the overtime and shootout loss points given to teams, which are basically the equivalent of the “participant” medal you got as a kid to not make you run home crying after getting last place in the school race. These points are ridiculous. A team wins a game and gets two points, but when a team loses after regulation play, they get a pity-point and make it difficult for those actually winning the games to rise in the standings. The Tampa Bay Lightning, with 31 overall points, have nine overtime/shootout points. Almost a third of their points have come in games in which they were the losing team. But what happens if you remove these “thanks for showing up” points from the equation?
