Box Office Breakdown: Audiences Say Yes to Jim Carrey

How will Will Smith remember Winter Solstice 2008? As the weekend he placed second.

Prior to Friday’s premieres, number crunchers were already predicting a close race between headliners Jim Carrey and Will Smith. Unfortunately for Warner Bros., Yes Man‘s ultimate victory felt slightly hollow. The comedy’s $18.2 million gross was nowhere near the figures Carrey used to generate. (Bruce Almighty‘s premiere earned $68 million in 2003; Liar Liar took in $31.4 million in 1997.) Yes did, though, do better than 2005’s Fun with Dick and Jane. (That film raked in $14.1 million during its open.)

Will Smith didn’t have much to celebrate over the last three days either. His latest film, Seven Pounds, only took in $14.8 million. That’s a number almost unheard of in Smith-land. The drama, directed by Pursuit of Happyness’ Gabriele Muccino, was the actor’s lowest grosser since Ali. (That film earned $14.7 million when it debuted in December 2001.)

2009 Screen Actors Guild Award Nominations (Film)

Although last January’s Screen Actors Guild Awards were spared from the writers’ dispute, SAG is facing its own strike this year. Regardless, the awards season must go on. Next month’s event - scheduled to air on Sunday, January 25th on both TNT and TBS - will come just three days after the Oscar nominations are announced.

Here are some of the noteworthy mentions from this year’s list of film nominees:

Doubt led this year’s crop with three nominations. Milk and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button came in second with two nods each.
Richard Jenkin was honored for The Visitor while Clint Eastwood (Gran Torino) was left off.
Heath Ledger added another nom to his belt. Meanwhile, Robert Downey Jr. was nominated for his turn in Tropic Thunder.
Kate Winslet was named for both The Reader and Revolutionary Road. Leonardo DiCaprio was left empty-handed.
The Dark Knight, Revolutionary Road and The Reader were all left out of the Best Ensemble categories.

Holiday Gift Guide: Remembering my first DVD player

Being both an early adopter, someone without a bunch of money, and a gadgetophile is a hard combination to pull off. Back in 1999, that was me as a teenager, and the thing I wanted most that year was a standalone DVD player. Sure, I had the DVD-ROM drive in my Sony Vaio desktop computer, but my monitor was only 15-inches back then, and I had a 28-inch television. Who wouldn’t want to watch DVDs on their awesome 28-inch television, with ghetto stereo sound?

That year, my girlfriend at the time decided she would surprise me with a Sony DVD player. If you weren’t in the market for DVD players back then, allow me to fill you in. Those $25 deals you are seeing this holiday season on players at Target and Wal-Mart? Yeah, prices have fallen exponentially. My first DVD player sold for $399.99. A serious token of her love, most certainly. I mean, I certainly wouldn’t have gotten a DVD player otherwise.

I immediately snapped up The Usual Suspects and a couple of other titles that I don’t even remember. I didn’t even care, I was just all about the slick new piece of technology.

Holiday Gift Guide 2008: Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-T700

If you want to pick up a camera for your loved one that is as much a fashion statement as it is a photography device, you’ve gotta consider the fashionista-friendly Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-T700. It’s not all about the looks, though, because this camera packs in a bunch of features. Like what? How about anti-blink and Smile Shutter technology? It also features a 3.5-inch ultra-high resolution touchscreen display, shoots at up to 10.1 megapixels, and includes 4GB of internal memory. It also includes the Picture Motion Browser software package, but seriously, who’s gonna use that? The Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-T700 retails for $399.99, but on Amazon we were able to find substantial discounts, depending on which color you were interested in:

There’s also a gold version, but we didn’t include that one since there was no discount available on it. Definitely a good gift for the woman in your life.

Sony Adds 100,00 More Users To The Home Beta

Sony has been trying to play catch up with Xbox Live ever since its inception, and they think they have the answer. The upcoming release of Home is Sony’s attempt to bring a “Live” community to the PS3, but using their own style. The Beta has been out for some time and it seems Sony wants it to be perfect before launching. Today, they have added another 100,000 Beta testers to their program to allow them to enjoy Home, which allows Sony to iron out the bugs. In case you have not been aware, Home is much like Second Life, but with game rooms, trophies and “Homes” for each of its players, where you can interact with one another. It’s nice to see Sony trying to take the initiative and attempt something new for online communities, and the free price point makes it a nice alternative. We’ll still have to wait and see if Home is all Sony claims it can be.

Sony PRS-700 Reader Digital Book

Sony PRS-700 Sony has announced that their new PRS-700 eBook will soon be available for all bookworms. Similar to their PRS-505, the Reader’s expanded memory can store about 350 digital titles and is compatible with MS-Duo and SD cards. It has a 6-inch display, weighs only about 8 oz. and can handle 7,500 pages of reading on a single battery charge. There are 5 pre-set text sizes, and the reader has a built-in LED reading light. Due out next month, the PRS-700 has a $400.00 price.

Sony ‘007 Quantum of Solace Laptop

Sony’s ‘007 Laptop, in honor of Quantum of Solace, is about to arrive in a limited edition of 700. It features an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 3G Internet connectivity, 4GB of DDR2 RAM, and a 13.3-inch LED backlit LCD. It also has a 128GB SDD or 320GB hard drive, a fingerprint reader, a Motion Eye camera and Blu-ray drive. At a price of about $4,000.00, it should be out later this month encased in a carbon fiber chassis. Sadly, it cannot shoot bullets out the back end or shake or stir your martini.

Samsung Forecasts the Demise of Blu-ray

Blu-ray Disc Samsung believes that Blu-ray will only last another 5 years and then will be replaced by another format or type of technology such as OLED. Andy Griffiths, Director of Consumer Affairs told Pocket-lint, “We will launch the OLED technology when it’s at a price that will be appealing to the consumer, unfortunately that’s not yet.”

Oddly enough, he may be right. We found out recently that Sony is rumored to be lowering the price of its BDP-S350 this month to make it a $300.00 purchase.

Sony Recalls Some VGN VAIOs

Sony VAIO One step forward, two steps back. As soon as we start to complement Sony on their creativity, we read something like this that kills the mood. The company is recalling about 438,000 VAIOs (over 72,000 in the U.S.) as potential fire hazards. The problem seems to be occurring in their VGN-TZ100, VGN-TZ200, VGN-TZ300 and VGN-TZ2000 series. They say the problem is “irregularly positioned wires near the computer’s hinge and/or dislodged screw inside the hinge.”

Pretty scary, eh? Especially when you notice that the word “battery” isn’t mentioned.

Is Maguire Gearing Up for Two Spidey Sequels?

Had you asked me last year whether I saw another Spider-Man in Tobey Maguire‘s future, I would have easily said “No.” Thank goodness, I didn’t put any money down on that.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the chances of Maguire of participating in two more sequels are actually quite strong. Maguire and director Sam Raimi are reportedly very close to sealing new deals with Columbia Pictures.

This news comes months after a premiere date was announced by the studio. Back in June, producer Laura Ziskin said she would like to see a fourth installment in theaters on Memorial Day 2011.

Assuming casting is determined soon, Columbia may opt to schedule back-to-back productions as early as fall 2009.
