VH1’s Surprising New Show
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Music, Reality, Cable, Gossip,
Taking a page out of A&E’s book, VH1 has reunited former pop/R&B legends Salt ‘N’ Pepa. The trio (which once included Spinderella) enjoyed mega success with hits like “What a Man,” “Push It,” and “Let’s Talk About Sex.” Then, suddenly, Salt ‘N’ Pepa vanished. In case anyone was wondering what happened to them, now you’ve got the chance.
VH1 is the esteemed power behind such shows as America’s Most Smartest Model, and don’t forget this is the cable network that brought us Flavor Flav. But don’t let that turn you off Salt ‘N’ Pepa, because you probably couldn’t avoid them even if you tried.
In a rare and surprising twist for VH1, actual musical performers (and get this-–music) are being featured on the new reality show. Some of the scenes between these former best friends are surprisingly touching and heartfelt, and viewers get a real sense of how very different these two spicy performers are. Salt is a mother and attends church, regularly performing gospel versions of her former hit songs. Pepa is also a mother but still loves being sexy, throwing herself into each performance with the energy fans once loved.
Haven’t seen the debut episode? Never fear-–VH1 is running it repeatedly, a pleasant change from shows like I Love New York and Rock of Love.

Expanded Guitar Hero III Track List Found
Posted by Paul Hamilton Categories: Activision, Music, Rumors,
A rumor began circulating yesterday that the full and final track list for Activision‘s Guitar Hero III was available. The problem with the list was that while it seemed credible it lacked several bands who had previously announced their involvement with the game, notably Atreyu and Velvet Revolver.
We followed up with one of the original sources yesterday and he confirmed that the list was accurate but perhaps not 100% complete, which would leave room for additional songs to be announced closer to the release date or perhaps even kept under wraps until the game ships. In any case, the selection is shaping up nicely with a few unexpected inclusions.

Harmonix Co-Founder Answers Questions About Rock Band
Posted by Paul Hamilton Categories: Accessories, Downloadable Content, Features, Hardware, Microsoft, Music, PlayStation 3, Wireless, Xbox 360,
The Official Xbox Magazine’s podcast has an interview this week with Harmonix co-founder and president Alex Rigopulos about their upcoming game Rock Band. In the interview he talks about the game bundles, although light on concrete details he does confirm a band-in-a-box bundle that will include a guitar, drum kit and microphone. However, he goes on to say that the PlayStation 3 version will include a wireless guitar controller while the Xbox 360 version will have to include a wired guitar because Microsoft‘s wireless technology is too expensive to make the bundle reasonably priced. Since the 360 also has only two USB ports, the 360 Rock Band bundle will also be packed with a USB hub.
Rigopulos goes on to discuss the game’s career modes a little, saying there will be both solo career mode that progresses in a linear fashion similar to what Guitar Hero players are used to, but they are also including a less linear band career mode. In this mode you traverse to various venues trying to build up your fan base and in some cases return to previously played locations to maintain your fame there. Also it’s worth noting that the solo career mode will not include a bass career track so your options are vocals, guitar and drums in solo career mode. But Rigopulos did reveal that the finale songs for each career path (and therefore likely the difficulty distinctions throughout) will be different for each instrument, and he even said that at this point the drum finale will be The Who’s “Won’t Get Fooled Again.”

Britney Spears Staging a Comeback
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Award Shows, Music, Prime Time, MTV, Gossip,
Justin Timberlake brought SexyBack, but can Brit bring herself back from the tabloid nightmare she has fallen into? Britney Spears has released a new single called Gimme More - a catchy tune that’s burning up radio waves. The song opens with Britney’s voice, rife with attitude: “It’s Britney, bitch” – but don’t worry, it does get a little better from there. Spears will also be performing at the MTV VMAs this year, a stage she once made famous when she exchanged a sultry, mid-song kiss with pop Queen Madonna (whose crown will never truly be taken, all kisses and pop princesses aside).

Big Names Attached to VMAs
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Award Shows, Music, Prime Time, Reality, Specials, MTV, Gossip,
Each year, the VMAs honor the artists that give us the most appealing music videos – somehow, the artists who get the nods are also top sellers. Beyonce and Justin Timberlake cleared seven nominations each, and both are up for video of the year. MTV’s glitzy awards show always features live music, celebrity interviews, and plenty of moon man statues. Beyonce got the video of the year nod for “Irreplaceable,” while Timberlake’s “What Goes Around…Comes Around” and “D.A.N.C.E.” both grabbed a spot in this best-of-the-best category. Amy Winehouse was nominated for “Rehab,” Rihanna for “Umbrella,” and Kanye West will compete with “Stronger” for video of the year.

Guitar Hero ‘80s Final Tracks Unveiled
Posted by Chris Pereira Categories: Activision, Music, PlayStation 2, Release Dates, Rumors, Xbox 360, Xbox Live Marketplace,
The list of songs that will appear in Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the ‘80s has been fully revealed with the announcement of the final eight, making for a total of 30 songs. Overall, the list isn’t terrible; it’s got a mixture of everything, from A Flock of Seagulls to The Vapors to Dio, but it just seems to be lacking any true flavor. It feels like a completely random selection of ‘80s songs, as opposed to, say, a really sweet group of ‘80s songs or one that captures a particular aspect of ‘80s music.. We still don’t have any official word on why Bow Wow Wow’s “I Want Candy” disappeared after being seen in earlier builds of the game.
The game is set for release on PlayStation 2 on July 24 at a full retail price of $49.99. Nothing has been announced, but 360 Guitar Hero II owners might be seeing a downloadable content package (read: lots of microtransactions) later this year containing these songs.
The newly announced songs:
- Anthrax’s “Caught In A Mosh”
- Accept’s “Balls to the Wall”
- Judas Priest’s “Electric Eye”
- Dead Kennedy’s “Police Truck”
- X’s “Los Angeles”
- The Go Gos’ “We Got the Beat”
- The Vapors’ “Turning Japanese”
- Winger’s “Seventeen”
- Limozeen’s “Because, it’s Midnite”

Bleeding Edge 060: Zune to Zune Music Transfers
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Gizmatic, Short Bytes, Features, Microsoft, Portable Audio / Video, Videocasts, Wireless / WiFi,
One of the big selling points that Microsoft is pushing with the Zune is the way that it can easily transfer music from one Zune device to another. Think about it - if you have a friend who owns a Zune, or if you happen to bump into someone on the subway who happens to be bumping one, you can quickly send over your favorite Fergie track in just a few seconds. Of course, you would actually have to find someone who owns a Zune first, and we have yet to meet anyone who even knows what a Zune is. Nevertheless, check out the video to see the admittedly slick Zune-to-Zune song transfers in action.
