CES 2008 Video: Lenovo U110 fashion ultra-portable notebook

Lenovo introed new notebooks at CES, our favorite being the U110, (named for its 11” widescreen), which is as sexy as it is compact. First we loved the gorgeous and eye-catching red, textured casing. Open it up and you’ll type on the glossiest keyboard ever, as pretty as it is comfortable. But the U110 is not just a fashion statement, it’s a solidly-built machine, with a 64 GB solid-state drive (SSD), which there are no moving parts whatsoever. Also includes a 1.3 MP webcam. Available in April for $1800 USD.

CES 2008 Video: Sandisk SSD Drive Technology

Many companies showed of Solid State Disks (SSD) at CES, but none so cost effectively as Sandisk. As usual Sandisk is bringing a product to market that beats the price of it’s competitors while still not skimping on features. SSD drives are an effective way to increase performance and battery life on notebooks without requiring re-engineering. Available now in a variety of capacities and price points - look for them in stores or devices soon.

New 32GB Solid State Drive from TDK

TDK has developed the world’s largest capacity small form factor solid state drive. The drive is 20% smaller than a 2.5” laptop disk drive and includes all the driver chips necessary for ATA communications. A total of 16x16Gbit NAND flash chips cover the circuit board giving the drive a storage capacity of 32GB.  That’s fairly impressive for a solid state drive in that form factor.  The GBDriver RA5 NAND controller which provides the ATA interface to the flash, supports UDMA33 giving the drive a maximum transfer rate of 33.3MB/second. No details are given about the drives sustained data speeds however.

No released date for this device has been given.  I fully expect to see similar form factor drives in the near future from Samsung, possibly utilizing their new Charge Trap Flash technology to compliment their already released 2.5” plug in laptop hard drive line.  Begun the solid state drive war has!
