Amy Winehouse Smoking

UPDATE: Despite what Amy’s father told the media, the singer’s rep denies Winehouse has emphysema. She supposedly has a “scarring of the lungs which could lead to emphysema.”

After years of unhealthy living, it’s been determined that singer has the early stages of emphysema. This diagnosis was made after the 24-year-old collapsed at her home last Monday. A week of tests had ruled out other possibilities - such as tuberculosis - for her chest problems.

According to the Mayo Clinic, emphysema is “is a progressive lung disease that results in shortness of breath and reduces your capacity for physical activity.” Unfortunately, Winehouse could have been suffering for some time and didn’t experience any symptoms “until irreversible damage” had already occurred.

Milano Electronic Cigarette

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Misc. Tech, Science,

Milano E-CigaretteBecause it is the inhaling that is part of the habit (plus the need to hold something besides a turkey leg,) giving up cigarettes is really tough with only a patch or gum. If you have tried to stop smoking but can’t get over the habit, or hang in one of those places that will not allow you to smoke, Milano Electronic Cigarettes may be the answer. They have no tar or carcinogenic substances such as carbon monoxide, but they do have both nicotine and non cartridges. The E-Cigarette comes with a charger and battery, and 3 filters. Somebody obviously thinks it works, as the company is temporarily out, but you can pre-order for the next batch for £39.99 (~$78.00.)

Patrick Swayze Still Smoking Despite Cancer

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Movies, Photos, Editorials,

Although I first saw this photo last week, I have grown increasingly more angry over the past few days.  Please someone tell me—why is still smoking?

Even though the actor was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in late January, this picture of him lighting up was taken just seven days ago.  Smoking is believed to be one of the possible risk factors behind the disease.

Patrick Swayze

Let’s hope Swayze is really doing all he can to fight this illness.

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Movies, Rumors,

Lindsay LohanStill trudging along on the path to a reformed, healthy lifestyle, is working on kicking yet another addiction: her cigs. The paparazzi have snapped plenty of pics of Lohan trolling around with Ariva (an anti-smoking product), but thus far the star has received no compensation for this endorsement. All that might be about to change.

According to , Lindsay is currently in talks with the manufacturer to fully endorse the product. One source close to Lohan says she’s in New York this week just for these discussions (and her are apparently unrelated).

The Coughing and Screaming Ashtray…Need We Say More?

Coughing and screaming ashtray

If you have a loved one who smokes a lot, here’s a gag gift they’ll (hopefully) appreciate. It’s the self-explanatory Coughing and Screaming Ashtray—which looks like a real pair of healthy lungs. But place a cigarette on it and…you guessed it…the ashtray starts making hacking and screaming sounds. Gets your point across while tempered with a dose of laughter. Should be great fun at parties, just don’t invite that one self-righteous smoker (we all know one) who won’t appreciate the joke. Available for $10 USD.

Disney to Ban Smoking in All Future Releases

Disney LogoTwo months ago, the MPAA announced that any films submitted for rating would now be scrutinized for instances of cigarette smoking, particularly when it is glamorized.  This new regulation was aimed at keeping these images away from the eyes of young, malleable children, and could affect said film’s rating, though the deciding criteria remains unknown.  Now family-friendly juggernaut Disney has become the first major Hollywood studio to back the MPAA’s anti-smoking decision to help keep cigarettes away from the youth of America.

The decision was made as a result of recent studies exploring the affect current films have on children given the ubiquitous nature of these images — the results don’t look good.  It seems that 90 percent of all films depict smoking, and that children with the highest exposure to these films are three times more likely to try smoking.

In addition to banning smoking in all upcoming releases, Disney has said it will place anti-smoking public service announcements on any future DVDs that feature smoking, and they are encouraging theater owners to do the same on the big screen.  The company’s two other labels, Touchstone and Miramax, will also be strongly discouraged from producing or distributing movies with images of smoking, though how strong the discouragement remains unclear.

Disney may be taking an important step in the fight against this national health crisis, but film is only a small piece of the pie.  It is up to our government to implement proper anti-smoking education for children — a quick PSA before a movie will do nothing.  And it helps to remember that smoking, unlike violence or sexual imagery, is around children all the time, wherever they go.  The only way to make real change is with parents who feel a need to protect their children.  Light a fire under them, and the problem will smoke itself.

Cartoon Smoking Censored

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Animation, Kids,

Tom and Jerry  Cartoon fans, take note.  Your beloved characters are not safe from the Smoking Police—- not even abroad.

Due to a complaint from one viewer, a British TV channel has resorted to censoring their cartoons.  The two Tom and Jerry episodes in question involved incidents of tobacco usage.  Those scenes—more than 50 years old—are now on the cutting room floor.  Additionally, the Boomerang Children’s channel has decided to go through their entire library to rid all their ‘toons of ‘glamorized’ smoking.  Other affected cartoons could include The Flintstones, The Jetsons and Scooby-Doo

Seriously—they might as well drop Scooby-Doo altogether.  Once they edit out all the van scenes, there won’t be much of a plot left.
