Leaked: New ATT text messaging plans in preparation for Verizon iPhone

ATT new text messaging rates

AT&T customers, get ready for new text messaging rates to go into effect starting next week. As the Verizon iPhone approaches, the company is looking to make their plans look a bit more attractive, and not so different from what Verizon will be offering. Above is an image leaked out of Best Buy showing that AT&T will have two text messaging plans going forward. The first is a new $10 per month for 1000 text messages (with each additional costing $.10,) while the second is the $20 unlimited text plan ($30 for family plans.) Going away are the $5/200 message and $15/1500 message plans. If you're  a current customer on one of those plans, you are grandfathered in and can hold onto it, but new customers won't have those choices starting on January 23rd. Also on that day, AT&T will be raising activation fees.

We're not sure how much this will do to keep people from jumping ship, but it certainly makes the texting plans a little clearer. Also, be sure to check out how Best Buy plans to convince customers to choose the AT&T iPhone. War is upon us!

Sprint raises smartphone data prices

If you're planning to get a new smartphone on Sprint, you should probably do so in the next couple of weeks. After Jan. 30, data plans for smartphones activated on the carrier will go up in price by $10 a month, the company announced today.

Called "Premium Data," the mandatory charge is added to the Sprint's existing unlimited $70 Everything Data plan, pumping it up to $80 a month. Sprint says the increase is to address its users' "growing appetite for a richer mobile experience." The charge affects only smartphones activated Jan. 30 or later—existing customers will not experience the increase until they upgrade.

Will you buy the Verizon iPhone?

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Features, Handhelds,

Verizon Wireless has finally scored the iPhone! The iPhone 4 will be available from Verizon on February 10th, and we wanted to know how the news affects you. Are you a Verizon customer who's been waiting for the iPhone to come to your network? Are you a fed up AT&T customer who is looking to switch ASAP? Maybe you're glad to see the announcement, but don't plan on buying until iPhone 5. Whatever it may be, hit up our poll and let us know.

Verizon iPhone 4: Available February 10 for $199

verizon iphone 4

This morning Verizon officially and formally announced the availability of the iPhone on their Verizon Wireless network. "Today we're partnering with a giant of the industry, and that's Apple." At a special press event dedicated to the announcement, the company said that they've been working with Apple for two years, the last of which was spent testing a CDMA version of the iPhone to ensure that it would perform as expected on the Verizon network. The Verizon iPhone 4 will launch on February 10th (pre-orders for existing Verizon Wireless customers start on February 3rd,) and it will cost the same $199 that AT&T charges, with two-year contract.

One significant difference that Verizon is offering that AT&T doesn't--the Verizon iPhone 4 will act as a mobile hotspot, allowing up to five devices to tether to the phone over Wi-Fi to use its data connection.

Verizon, RIM, ATT looking to protect your smartphone from malicious attacks

protect smartphone

Many people take the security of their smartphones for granted. As the amount of private data communicated through smartphones increases, so does the threat of attacks from viruses and hackers. Choosing to act now rather than wait for a security fiasco, phone companies such as AT&T, are hiring security researchers to focus on strengthening the security of mobile phones from attacks. Since security has previously not been a major concern on mobile devices it will take some time (years) for these security measures to fully implement.

"Everyone is realizing that this is an uncontrolled environment," said Edward G. Amoroso, chief security officer of AT&T Inc. "We don't want to have the same problems that we had with PCs."

Playstation Phone to be called ‘Xperia Play’

Xperia Play

While 'PlayStation Phone' seemed to be the way to go for what is essentially a PlayStation phone, the device is most likely going to be branded 'Xperia Play' by Sony Ericcson.

This comes after learning of a number of .com, .net, and .org domain names registered as XperiaPlay by a PR agency known as Jung Relations, whose long list of clients includes Sony Ericcson.

Xperia Play is set to launch at MWC this February, but won't reach retail store shelves until April.
