Sprint Nexus S 4G gets big discount alongside Google Wallet launch

Google Nexus S 4G Wallet NFC

Sprint has announced that its Nexus S 4G smartphone will now be $49.99 after rebate, the highlight of the company's Google Wallet launch.

Customers can visit Sprint.com and order the Nexus S 4G for $49.99 with a new two-year contract or upgrade, Sprint said in a press release, after a $50 American Express gift certificate. However, on the Web site Sprint is currently charging new customers $29.99 for the Nexus 4G, and makes no mention of the gift card.

It can be a bit difficult to tell how often a phone like the Nexus S is offered for free; Best Buy has offered the phone for free after rebate on two occasions, most recently in August. Last December, it launched at $199, or $599 unlocked.

We havn't reviewed the Sprint version of the Nexus S 4G, although it uses the same body as T-Mobile's version, which debuted last December. At 4.9 by 2.5 by 0.4 inches and 4.5 ounces, the Nexus S is a black slab phone that's noticeably smaller than the recent round of devices with 4.3-inch displays. The Nexus looks elegant because it uses more rounded corners and a black bezel, rather than cheaper-looking chromed plastic.

iPhone 5 design revealed by Case-Mate?

iPhone 5 case-mate design

This morning, Case-Mate put up a product page for a new iPhone 5 case with images of how the device would look inside of the new accessory. The page was quickly pulled, but not before eagle-eyed tipsters grabbed some screenshots. As you can see in the image above, they show an iPhone that takes design cues from the iPad 2, sporting a thinner, tapered design. Of course, we'd find it hard to believe that Apple showed their secretive hardware to Case-Mate, so they're likely going off of leaked design specs with these renderings. Still, it's an interesting look at what might be coming from Apple in the next few weeks.

Android 4.0 ‘Ice Cream Sandwich’ set for October or November arrival

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich

Last Friday, Google chairman Eric Schmidt slipped that Android 4.0, the next major overhaul to the mobile operating system, will be released in "October or November."

Speaking to Salesforce.com CEO Marc Benioff at the Dreamforce conference, Schmidt said, "We have a new operating system, internally known as Ice Cream Sandwich for some reason, which is being released in October, November." Scroll down to watch the entire keynote; Schmidt slips at 30:28 mark, as reported by AndroidandMe.com.

Up to now, Google hasn't provided a release date for Ice Cream Sandwich, but perhaps Schmidt thought it was an obvious point given unconfirmed reports of Verizon possibly launching the Droid Prime, the first Android 4.0 device and believed to be the third Google Nexus smartphone, this October.

Droid Bionic

Motorola's long-awaited Droid Bionic smartphone is finally here.

The device, Verizon's first dual-core, LTE phone, is available now at Verizon stores and online at verizonwireless.com. It doesn't come cheap, though: the Bionic will set you back $299.99 with a two-year contract.

For a limited time, those who purchase the Lapdock accessory, which essentially turns your smartphone into a 11.6-inch laptop, will get a $100 mail-in rebate when subscribing to the $50, 5GB data plan or higher. That Lapdock, however, is also $300.

The first public photo taken with an iPhone 5?

iPhone 5 camera sushi

The picture of delicious-looking sushi that you see above may have been taken with an iPhone 5. PocketNow is reporting that the EXIF data from the image indicates that it was taken with an iPhone 4, however, prior to cropping, the image weighed in at almost 8 megapixels--much higher than the iPhone 4 limit of 5 megapixels. The iPhone 5 has been long-rumored to sport an 8 megapixel image.

This (very attractive) photo claims to have been taken by an iPhone 4, but the rest of its EXIF data tells a different story: although the image has been cropped to 2235x2291 (5.12 megapixels), the original picture was a much larger 3264x2448 -- or just shy of eight megapixels. What's more, the lens was recorded as a 4.3mm f/2.4, which is closer to that of a point-and-shoot than the iPhone 4's actual 3.85mm f/2.8.

The image has since been removed from Flickr, and it's been confirmed that it awas posted by an Apple iOS software engineer.

Apple iPhone 5 pre-orders live on Deutsche Telekom

iPhone 5

Though the iPhone 5 has yet to be formally announced, Deutsche Telekom is now taking pre-orders for the device, according to Bloomberg.

Don't expect a splashy ad campaign about those pre-orders, however. Deutsche Telekom will give out coupons to customers who specifically ask for the next iPhone, Bloomberg said. But Deutsche Telekom will not be providing details on the name or the release date of the next-gen Apple smartphone.

But while Deutsche Telekom is the parent company of U.S. carrier T-Mobile, this doesn't necessarily signal that T-Mobile will be getting the iPhone anytime soon. Deutsche Telekom has been an Apple European sales partner since the debut of the iPhone in 2007. In late August, there were reports that the iPhone 5 would operate on T-Mobile and Sprint 3G networks and could hit stores in early- to mid-October, but no announcements have been made.
