iPhone 4S

Today (after accidentally outing it) Apple announced the iPhone 4S. The device is the follow-up to the massively popular iPhone 4, and features an internal overhaul while keeping the same iPhone 4 external design. So, what's changed? First, the iPhone 4S is rocking an A5 processor, which makes it 2x faster in performance, and 7x faster graphics performance than the iPhone 4. The camera is upgraded to 8 megapixels, and records in 1080p video.

The iPhone 4S has two cell antennas, and will intelligently switch between the two on the fly. Speaking of antennas, the 4S is also a world phone, supporting both GSM and CDMA networks. The device can download data at about 14.4Mbps, which is double the iPhone 4 and its 7.2Mbps speeds - AT&T actually says this is 4G speed, but we won't get into all that.

The iPhone 4S will be available in black and white on October 14th, and will cost $199 for 16 GB, $299 for 32 GB, and $399 for the 64 GB model, a first for the iPhone. Another first? In addition to AT&T and Verizon, now Sprint customers can get in on the love as well.

iPhone 4S Japan

It looks like Apple Japan has let the cat out of the bag prior to the official announcements set for this morning. Expect Apple to announce the iPhone 4S, an upgraded iPhone 4 with better camera, improved GPS, faster A5 processor, and the new Assistant feature. In addition, it looks like the iPod nano will get updated as well. The iPhone 4S will launch on October 14th!

Sprint bets the farm on iPhone, pays Apple $20 billion for 30.5 million iPhones

Sprint iPhone

It's no longer considered a rumor, Sprint will be getting the iPhone 4S / iPhone 5 (or whatever it ends up being called at tomorrow's iPhone event,) and they are literally betting the future of the company on the Apple smartphone. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the company has agreed to pay Apple $20 billion on a 30 million unit order for the next couple of iPhone versions over the next few years, looking to mitigate the exclusive that AT&T and Verizon have had. Sprint would then subsidize each device for $500 to sell to customers, and will likely not see any profits from the gamble until 2014 at the earliest.

Apple officially announces October 4 iPhone event

iPhone 5 event

Apple has confirmed its October 4th iPhone announcement, as they've sent invites out to members of the press inviting us all to join them for the news. Apple's invites are always pretty telling in a vague sort of way. In this one, we see the date and time of the announcement, as well as the location (Apple's Cupertino campus.) The iPhone icon, along with the phrase "Let's talk iPhone." is where the hint is, in our opinion. The big rumored feature of the iPhone 5 is Assistant, which is said to be voice control on steroids. We bet this will be the big feature talked about this time, and you'll certainly be talking to your iPhone a lot more.

We'll have all the news on October 4th as it happens, start to finish!

Apple to announce iPhone 5 on October 4 from main campus

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Smartphones, Handhelds, Rumors,

According to tipsters speaking to AllThingsD's John Paczkowski, Apple's allegedly planning on making its big iPhone 5 announcement at an event on October 4. But contrary to previous announcement events, you won't be seeing Apple executives strutting around the stage at San Francisco's Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. According to Paczkowski's sources, Apple's moved the big iPhone announcement to its main campus.

There's no indication as to why the event moved. The reasoning could be as innocuous as the fact that the Yerba Center might already have been booked with another event on October 4. Or, for that matter, Apple might not have exactly known when it was going to be able to produce its iPhone announcement and, thus, hosting the event on its own campus affords the company additional flexibility (and additional time to pick the date).

Samsung Galaxy S II is their fastest selling smartphone ever

Galaxy S II Epic touch 4g

Samsung has announced the latest batch of sales figures for its Galaxy S II Android smartphone, and the device remains the company's fastest-growing smartphone yet.

According to Samsung, the Galaxy S2 has officially hit 10 million in sales all of five months after the device's worldwide launch this past April. Sales in South Korea take the lion's share of the total at 3.6 million, with European markets close behind at 3.4 million. Sales of the smartphone in Asia hit a total of 2.3 million.

"In just five months the Galaxy S II has seen tremendous growth, reflecting its tremendous popularity with customers around the world, who in selecting the Galaxy S2 as their device of choice have driven the device's strong market position globally," said J.K. Shin, president of Samsung's mobile communications division, in a statement.

Previous sales figures put the Galaxy S2 at three million units sold after a mere 55 days on the market, shattering the company's sales records at the time. In fact, the Galaxy S2 hit the three-million figure all of 30 days faster than its predecessor device, Samsung's Galaxy S smartphone. Total Galaxy S2 sales then ballooned up to five million at the 85 day-mark.

OtterBox has produced a case for the “iPhone 4S”

Otterbox iPhone 4S

Okay, we know Apple is set to introduce the next iPhone on October 4, but a leak from a major iPhone case manufacturer seems to imply that we'll be seeing a slight upgrade to the iPhone 4, and that it'll be called the iPhone 4S. It's definitely not a typo, as the case itself has the volume buttons moved to the right side of the iPhone 4S, right above the SIM card slot. As we reported earlier today, Al Gore let it slip that Apple would be releasing new iPhones, plural, in October. Could we see both an iPhone 5 and an iPhone 4S?

We've got a larger image of the case after the jump.

Al Gore expects more than one iPhone to be released next month

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Smartphones, Handhelds, Rumors,

Al Gore Apple

It appears that Apple board member and former Vice President Al Gore just slipped that multiple iPhones were coming out in October, according to reports.

"Not to mention the new iPhones coming out next month. That was a plug," Gore said at the Discovery Invest Leadership Summit in South Africa, as picked up by the The Next Web and CNET.

Yes, Gore said "phones," plural. Is Apple planning to release more than one new iPhone? it's certainly possible: All year long, there have been unconfirmed reports that Apple will release an iPhone 5 and an iPhone 4 "plus", a cheaper, smaller version of the current iPhone with only minor upgrades. How would a low-end iPhone fit into Apple's strategy? It could be an attempt to ward off Android and gain smartphone market share in other parts of the world.

Apple set to reveal iPhone 5 on October 4

iPhone 5

If All Things D is to be believed (and they're a very trustworthy source,) Apple will be taking the stage on October 4th to introduce the iPhone 5 to the world. New Apple CEO Tim Cook is expected to take the reigns for the event, likely with a familiar cast of Apple execs like Scott Forstall and Phil Schiller. The report claims that this is more than just an educated guess at a date, but rather this is a date that has been selected by Apple itself.

Along with an iPhone 5 announcement, we also expect details of a slightly redesigned and discounted iPhone 4, as well as details on where the iPod line is going next (as is typical for Apple Fall events.) So the wait will be another couple of weeks, but in the meantime you can tide yourselves over by reading through all the iPhone 5 rumors.
