UK Residents Block Google Street View Car

Google CarMany areas in the UK, such as shopping centers and streets, have surveillance cameras. But Broughton residents had had enough and formed a human chain to keep out a car that was shooting for Google Street View. Paul Jacobs noticed the car and got ticked off enough to round up his neighbors to block the road. By the time the police showed up, the car had left the area. This is not the first time Street View has had complaints. Pictures of shelters for battered woman in the U.S. were previously removed.

Conficker Damage Minimal

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Internet,

Viral SpreadSo did you wake up and wonder if your computer had been infected? It seems that Conficker did most of its damage in Asia, and was found to be modifying itself to make it more difficult to eradicate. While the threat is still not over, the best thing to come out of the virus is that security has been beefed up to try to find it. Symantic’s Vincent Weafer said that they believe that it was designed to make money. Maybe it can find Madoff’s missing millions.

Conficker to Come Out April 1?

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Internet, Microsoft,

WormWe have mentioned Conficker before and how Microsoft is seeking help to find the source. Apparently, it is still unaccounted for and there may be a serious problem as of April 1. The program turns off security settings in Microsoft Windows and the fear is that infected computers may contact a control system on that date. Dan Kaminsky, a consultant for IOActive, says that it might go after corporate networks, especially if they run older Window versions.

Monster Database Hacked

Monster logoLooking for a job on Monster? Then you may be at risk of security theft. Apparently their database was hacked into worldwide and data such as user IDs and passwords, email addresses, names, phone numbers and some basic demographic data was accessed. The site suggests that you change your password and has a security page with more guidelines. They do not ever contact you by email, so if you see one that looks Monster related, delete it quickly as it may be a phishing scheme. We would suggest that you never post a resume online as this is way more info than you should put out there.

Paris Hilton To Catch a Thief?

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Legal Issues, Editorials,

Paris Hilton has adopted the role of Nancy Drew, saying she has an idea of who might have committed the recently-reported theft in her California home.

“I think whoever did this, definitely has been there before,” Hilton spoke in an interview with E! on the subject. “We have some suspects that I’m thinking of.”

Reportedly, around $2 million in jewels and other items was taken from the heiress. The burglar entered the home wearing gloves and a hoody, walking right in through the front door.

“You know, it’s just an invasion of privacy and it’s happened to me before,” she admitted. “It’s really scary, but they’re doing a huge investigation on this and we’re going to catch this person.”

Don’t bet on it. Most home burglaries go unsolved.

Hilton has “upped” her security following the crime, but she’ll still be able to receive her property - if the thief should decide to give it back. “They just have to anonymously have a taxi drop it off in my front gate in a box with my jewelry and everything - they won’t get in trouble,” she offered. “But if all this goes on for much longer, they’re going to get in more trouble,” Hilton threatened.

With a participation of 230 government reps, security agents, civil groups and private companies, the exercise resulted in errors in planning, leadership and communications. If such an incident occurred, there could be a banking or electric system failure. Mark Gerencser, of the Booz Allen Hamilton consulting service which ran the simulation, claimed that, “There isn’t really anybody in charge.” How comforting.
